At the Pima Animal Care Center, a unique volunteer program pairs people with aphasia to read stories to shelter dogs. This Paws and Pages initiative, led by speech experts, provides a judgment-free space for volunteers to build skills and confidence. Andy Ortiz and Melissa Howit, both diagnosed with aphasia, found solace and improvement through this program, even finding love and adopting a dog together. The program, with its fast-filling spots, is creating community and joy, one tail wag at a time.
