Common motives include protecting oneself or others from harm, avoiding punishment or embarrassment, and gaining advantages in relationships or work. Insecurity and fear of rejection can lead to exaggeration or fabrication to fit in. Many want to blame others rather than taking responsibility for their mistakes.
