Mom, Rebecca and her daughters - Vivian, Amanda and Kimberly were so close.<br />In 2009, Vivian was in an abusive relationship with Damon Butler which turned deadly. Damon took the lives of Vivian and her mother, Rebecca. It was brutal. Kimberly and Amanda made it through that difficult time but unbeknownst to them, there was more devastation to come.<br />In 2015, Amanda’s boyfriend, Brayan Espana, was also an abuser. They’d been together for a few years but Amanda was ready to finally make her escape and be with her children. Unfortunately, the night she was trying to leave, Brayan called the police. Amanda hanged herself with the cord of an iron. Or...did she? This case is going to have multiple parts. Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability and 351,000 of these are children aged between 0-17. There are different conditions that make a person more likely to have a learning disability. The majority of people with Down’s Syndrome and Williams Syndrome will more than likely have some level of learning disability. About half of people with Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome will have a form of learning disability. Different types of learning disability exist, with some people presenting with only mild symptoms which makes it slightly more difficult to diagnose. Other people may have moderate or even severe learning disabilities and these people may need significantly more help, including with personal care, mobility and communication. The airplane was sent falling down to the ground almost breaking the speed of sound.<br /><br />All 43 people on board Flight 1771 were killed.<br /><br />Was this some tragic accident, a malfunction in the aircraft? We draw comparisons to her case and that of Junko Furuta, and discuss the phenomena of bystander apathy, why no one in power stepped in to assist, why neighbors were apathetic despite numerous instances of public child abuse, and why neighborhood kids considered the ordeal to be some sort of funny sideshow or game, despite there being dozens of witnesses to her torture.<br /><br />The murder of Sylvia Likens was a child murder which occurred in Indianapolis, Indiana in October 1965. Likens, aged 16, was held captive and subjected to increasing levels of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and torture, and neighborhood children were allowed to do the same if they paid an admission fee, which many did. During her senior year of high school, she decided she would join the Army in an effort to not burden her parents with out-of-state tuition for college. Although Dr. Johnson (Lavena’s dad), begged her not to join the Army – she did so anyway. She thought the Army was a good deal – you serve your country for a few years and then you get 4 years of college paid! Recruiters promised her she would likely not deploy, even though in 2004 there was an uptick in deployed troops. Lavina kicked butt as a woman in the military – especially in Bootcamp, serving as an example to men and women. She made her family so proud. She went on to her first duty assignment and within a few months, she was notified she’d be deploying to Iraq. As a communications troop – it didn’t seem like a bad deal – she’d be staying inside the wire. But within 6 weeks of being in Iraq, her parents received the dreaded knock on the door – their daughter Lavena L. Johnson was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Say what now? Not Lavena! She would never kill herself! She had just spoken to her parents and was excited to be home for the holidays! She was a week shy of her 20th birthday – it just didn’t make sense. Lavena’s family would soon find out that things aren’t always what they seem, but once the Army said Lavena committed suicide, it would take an act of Congress to get any concrete evidence that might show Lavena was actually murdered.
