George C. Parker saw in the Brooklyn Bridge an opportunity for a quick buck and took it. Within the millions of people crossing the bridge per year, there were bound to be some suckers...
As for Charles Lewis Blood...
He developed an interest in the use of nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) as an anesthetic, and even learned how to manufacture it. He then claimed it as his own invention, calling it “oxygenized air,” and promoted it as a cure for tuberculosis and other respiratory tract diseases.
