In this episode replay from 2022, Imara discusses how the idea of Black civil rights has been reduced to the idea of changes in specific laws. But the civil rights movement also included the ideas of what we now call Black liberation: a specific revisioning of what our society should look like steeped in racial justice. Consequently we can see that the civil rights movement never totally succeeded and has a tremendous amount of unfinished business that we live out every single day. That’s why we wanted to talk with Black trans leaders about what a new agenda for Black civil rights should look like. From the work of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera to the Covid-19 pandemic, mutual aid has long been key to trans survival. To find out what trans mutual aid looks like today, Imara speaks with organizers Asanni Armon and Tuck Woodstock. First, Asanni explains how party-based organization For the Gworls is disrupting conventional approaches to fundraising and aid distribution for Black trans people. They discuss how their approach to crowdsourcing and collaborating with traditional non-profits has changed over the years. Hours after the tragic Uvalde Shooting, dangerous rumors began to circulate online that the shooter, Salvador Ramos, was transgender. These falsehoods led to online harassment of trans people and to an assault on a trans teen in Texas. But these acts of virtual and physical hate violence don’t happen in a vacuum. There is an active and vibrant ecosystem on the Internet that is designed to weaponize beliefs about our community, and exploit actual tragedies, in order to create support for pushing trans people out of public life entirely.
