Ep 680EP 680: Breaking Barriers in Women's Running

We are joined by Maggie Mertens, the author of "Better Faster Farther: How Running Changed Everything We Know About Women," which challenges long-held beliefs about women in running. Starting with a powerful reminder from over a century ago, when a woman ran the first modern Olympic marathon without permission, the book reveals how women have faced relentless opposition from the medical establishment, media, and athletic associations. Despite these challenges, they ran barefoot, without sports bras, and sometimes disguised as men, defying quack science and societal norms. Mertens takes us from this boundary-breaking marathon in Greece in 1896 to today's ultra-marathons, like the Spine Race, where women have shattered records. The conversation explores the history of women in running, the progress made, and the lingering stereotypes and inequalities. It highlights the achievements of female athletes, the impact of Title IX, and the need for more research on women's bodies in sports. Overall, it sheds light on the importance of breaking down barriers and empowering women in the world of running. You can preorder the book now or buy it on June 18th when it is released. Ep 677EP 677: No One Gets There Alone

Dr. Rob Bell discusses his book 'No One Gets There Alone' and emphasizes the importance of relationships and connectivity in achieving personal and professional goals. He shares a personal story of receiving help during a race and how it changed his mindset. The conversation explores: Success is not solely a product of individual effort; relationships and connectivity play a crucial role. Helping others can improve our own performance and mindset. Competition is about competing against ourselves and overcoming our own mental barriers. Treating others differently and offering support can have a significant impact on their performance and well-being. Changing our language and self-talk can positively influence our mindset and performance. Helping others not only benefits them but also helps us grow and improve. Shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset opens up opportunities and fosters cooperation. Choosing the right models and looking beyond the top achievers can provide inspiration and guidance. No one achieves their goals alone; we all need support and encouragement from others. Ep 676EP 676: Runners' Rescue: The Trail Triage Toolkit

What if there was a way to instantly diagnose and address running issues right on the trail? In this episode, we talk about the new Trail Triage app. We speak with the team that developed the app answering these and other key questions: What is Trail Triage? Why was it developed? How can it help me on my training runs and racing? How do I access it? Where does the content come from? Can I trust it? How much does it cost? The app then helps you diagnose the issue, and provides some solutions that might help and let you know if it is serious enough to DNF or not. This is the team who brought this vision to life: • Bob Crowley, who sparked the original idea; • Dr. John Anderson, a seasoned emergency physician whose medical insights are woven into the core of the app; and • Scott Vosburg, the tech wizard who turned these ideas into reality.

Ep 673EP 673: It Starts with the Feet

Everything starts with foot health, with your contact with the ground. Your body relies on that first bit of sensory information, so up that kinetic chain, all the way through the shin, the knee, the hip, the low back, the torso, all the way up to the brain." Fitness expert and seasoned endurance athlete, Mark Sisson delves into the crucial link between foot health and overall mobility, underscoring how vital feet are in athletic activities like walking and running. He points out that proper foot function not only wards off injuries but also enhances performance. Highlighting his minimalist footwear company, Peluva, he emphasizes shoes that offer both protection and a natural ground feel. Sisson critiques early minimalist designs for their flawed execution that led to injuries and discusses the swing towards maximalist shoes, cautioning against their over-cushioning. Throughout, he champions minimalist shoes as a means to strengthen feet and support an active lifestyle. Takeaways Foot health is crucial for overall mobility and longevity. Proper foot function can prevent injuries and improve athletic performance. Minimalist footwear that provides ground feel and protection is beneficial for foot health. Bunions are not necessarily genetic and can be improved with proper foot care. Maintaining foot health is essential for an active and independent lifestyle. The original concept of minimalist footwear was a great idea, but the execution was poor, leading to injuries. Proper running form is crucial, and footwear can either support or hinder it. Excessive cushioning in running shoes may have drawbacks and can impact running efficiency. Walking is an important activity for foot health and overall fitness. EP 659: The Endurance Eats Enigma: What to Consume When the Miles Add Up

This episode is focused on the fuel that drives endurance athletes. It's a world where what you eat isn't just about satisfying hunger; it's about strategy, precision, and sometimes, survival. Joining us from Australia are two experts of sports dietetics, Steph Gaskell and Alan Mccubbin, co-hosts of "The Fueling Endurance" podcast. Steph, a trail runner herself, is an expert of exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome. She's on a mission to unravel the mysteries of how our guts betray us during a run and how to keep the digestive peace. Then there's Alan, a man who can talk about sodium and hydration. With a background in mountain biking and sailing, he knows the fine line between staying hydrated and hitting a wall. Takeaways Dehydration can increase the risk of gut symptoms and impact digestion, absorption, and the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. Vomiting may provide temporary relief from gastrointestinal stress, but it does not eliminate the underlying issue. Cramping can be caused by a combination of factors, including hydration, electrolyte balance, neuromuscular responses, muscle fatigue, and psychological stress. Sweat rate and electrolyte loss are not always correlated, and individual variations exist in sweat sodium concentration. EP 658: Fueling for Endurance

Dr. Latt Mansor joins The Nation to discuss how metabolic flexibility and fat adaptation can significantly improve endurance running performance. He discusses the roles of different fuel sources, emphasizing that fats and ketones are more efficient for endurance athletes than proteins. Additionally, Dr. Mansor highlights the benefits of exogenous ketones like Ketone IQ for enhancing athletic performance, aiding in recovery, and potentially improving sleep and symptoms of Alzheimer's. This episode is a deep dive into the science of metabolism in endurance sports and offers practical insights into how athletes can optimize their energy use for peak performance. Dr. Latt Mansor is a renowned expert in physiology and metabolism with a PhD from Oxford, specializing in diabetic heart metabolism under low oxygen conditions, and has extensive experience consulting with elite sports, military, and clinical groups. Takeaways Metabolic flexibility is the body's ability to utilize different fuel sources at different times. Becoming fat-adapted allows endurance athletes to tap into their fat storage more readily, improving performance and endurance. Protein is primarily used as building blocks for the body and is not an optimal fuel source. Ketones, naturally produced during fasting or a ketogenic diet, can provide an alternative fuel source for the brain and other organs. Ketones can help balance glycogen in the body Exogenous ketones, such as ketone esters, can be used as a supplement to increase blood ketone levels and improve performance and recovery. Taking these before bed can improve sleep quality and aid in recovery. Ketones have been found to help people with sleep apnea and diabetes sleep better. Anecdotal reports suggest that exogenous ketones may improve symptoms of Alzheimer's. When choosing ketone products, it's important to consider the active ingredients and quality. Transparency and scientific validation are crucial in substantiating product claims. Consumers should be cautious of cheaper products and prioritize quality and effectiveness. Cutting through the noise and finding the truth requires careful evaluation and experimentation. Tune into Dr. Latt's podcast, HVMN (Health via Modern Nutrition) Podcast. It covers a wide range of topics related to metabolism and health.
