Not Abolished, but Fulfilled
Understanding Matthew 5:17 Through the Lens of Grace
When Jesus said, “I did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them,” He spoke a single sentence that continues to stir questions, confusion, and deep reflection.
For some, the Law feels intimidating. For others, it feels outdated. And for many, it feels like a measuring stick they can never quite reach.
So what did Jesus really mean—and why does it matter for us today?
Why Jesus Said This at All
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, surrounded by religious leaders, everyday people, and disciples still learning what it meant to follow Him.
Many were asking questions like:
- Is Jesus replacing Moses?
- Is He dismissing Scripture?
- Is He lowering God’s standards?
In response, Jesus made His mission clear: He wasn’t canceling God’s Word—He was completing it.
In modern terms, it’s like Him saying, “I didn’t come to delete what God started. I came to finish it.”
