S1 Ep 88Memorial Day Special: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Apologies to all our incredible listeners! Tours are up and running and we had some technical issues to work out, so we are a bit behind on releasing episodes. However, we wanted to drop this particular episode on this special day as our nation comes together to honor and remember the incredible sacrifices made by our Armed Forces throughout history. We could think of no better way to mark the occasion than to teach you everything you've ever wanted to know about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of our country's most important and meaningful places. We will be moving to a lighter "summer schedule" as with tours picking up (hopefully) we will have less time to work on this. But we will still be bringing you two episodes a month, and then at least one bonus episode a month for our Patrons, along with some other bonus material. Thank you for your patience and support! ~ Tour Guide Tell All crew _______________________________________________ This year, 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and we wanted to talk about this anniversary, the Tomb itself, and its history. S1 Ep 83World War I and the New National World War I Memorial
"(WWI) is a war that is under-studied in the United States. Somebody said this to me once, that we feel about World War II in the United States, the way that Europeans feel about World War I....World War I is the big trial, and World War II is kind of this thing that happened afterward. And to wit, we have a friend, Matilda...and she moved to a teeny tiny town in the middle of nowhere France for a little while and there's about 100 people that live there, and on Armistice Day...they all get together, and day drink, because France; and they read out the names of all the of the people from their village that died in the war." We are dedicating a new memorial in DC, the National World War One Memorial, this week! We at Tour Guide Tell All are never ones to let a good opportunity go to waste, so the Rebeccas are here to chat about the memorial, and give an overview of American participation in the war. “So as FDR is approaching her about joining his cabinet, about becoming this cabinet appointee, she has adapted a very specific look, which is sort of no nonsense, black and navy suits, very little makeup...she was very reserved...just very quiet and to the point. But she wrote somebody and basically said that women in politics were accepted if they reminded men of their mothers. So this is what she goes in with the mindset of; that if she is going to take what she accomplished in New York, and get this done on a national scale, this is how she’s going to play the game. And I just think it’s important to note that she is not naive about what it’s like to be a woman in politics at this time, and that she is very calculated in the way she has presented herself." We have reached the end of Women’s History Month and are finishing off with a woman that we have wanted to cover for a long time: Frances Perkins! First female cabinet secretary, champion of the worker, author of Social Security; Perkins did all that and more but gets so little credit for any of it! Join us for some labor history AND some women’s history, along with some discussion of one of the worst industrial disasters in history. Perkins has all that and more! Comments or Questions? S1 Ep 78The Brilliant and Bombastic Flo Kennedy
"When it came to...rhetorical style, Flo was a down and dirty kinda type...Let’s say the uncomfortable thing, let’s get up into our uncomfortable space, because that’s where we can start to move past, and start getting the real work done. We continue our exploration of interesting women in history with Florynce Kennedy. More myth than fact at this point, the real woman behind the story played an important role in early America and the development of the relationship between native Americans and the settling Europeans. S1 Ep 76Madaline Pollard
"I think she’s really remarkable because she never paints herself as an angel either. She realizes that first of all, that’s never going to work, and second of all, that’s not real." We are kicking off this month with the story of a woman whose name is not well-known but whose experience has been shared by women throughout history. S1 Ep 74The Incredible Barbara Jordan
"It’s fascinating how much in a short, relatively short political career, she is so admired, she is so celebrated….she is called a genius, she is called a hero; the salvation of American politics! She was called the best politician of the century, but also she faced incredible criticism from all sides. Which is not surprising because she was a Black woman in politics." Our Black History Month series continues with an exploration of the life and legacy of legendary Texas politician, Barbara Jordan. She busted every glass ceiling she encountered on her political journey and in a relatively short career, made incredible strides for women of color. Learn about the Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas political traditions, the Watergate impeachment hearings, hidden disease, a secret love, and more. Comments or Questions? S1 Ep 72The First Two Black Senators in US History
“I got the idea to do this topic specifically on Twitter, someone tweeted about how when Hiram Revels, the very first African American Senator was appointed, because all senators in those days were appointed, he takes his seat and there was a big controversy about whether he should be seated and some segregationist senators literally turned their backs on him on the floor of the United States Senate. And I thought: this is a really interesting story, we should talk about that” February is Black History Month, and Tour Guide Tell All is highlighting important but perhaps lesser known African American heroes this month, all month long. We continue our exploration of African American history with a discussion of the first two Black Senators, Hiram Revels and Blanche Bruce. Both were appointed from Mississippi just after the end of the Civil War and represent both the hope and the tragedy of Reconstruction. Join Rebecca and Becca as they discuss two lesser known heroes who both boldly tried to envision a more equal United States, only to have history turn against them. Comments or Questions?
