Ook al woont marathonloper Bashir al jaren in Gent, toch kent hij Ethiopië als zijn broekzak. Als kind vluchtte hij voor de burgeroorlog in zijn thuisland Somalië richting Addis Abeba. Het was zijn moeder die de weg naar België plaveide. Sport werd Bashirs uitlaatklep en dankzij goede vrienden groeide hij door tot de topatleet die hij nu is. Met als hoogtepunt brons op de Olympische Zomerspelen 2020 in Tokio.
