Ep 95No More Picky Eaters

In this episode of Toddlers Made Easy, we explore effective strategies to prevent and manage picky eating in toddlers. Understanding toddler behavior is key, as food choices become a primary area of autonomy. How you respond to this natural pickiness can influence whether it becomes an entrenched habit. We delve into the concept of the Fussy Food Loop, highlighting how to avoid common reactions that may worsen picky eating. From a developmental perspective, babies are generally open to various foods, while toddlers' growth and cognitive changes can lead to unpredictable eating habits.A Big-Hearted Interpretation (BHI) encourages looking at mealtime from your toddler's perspective. Trusting and empowering your child, rather than pressuring them, is crucial. We discuss the importance of using positive language to encourage trying new foods and avoiding the pitfalls of becoming a short-order cook.Recognizing red flags is essential, as picky eating might sometimes indicate a more serious issue, such as poor weight gain or developmental concerns. For more strategies and support, check out the Toddlers Made Easy course, linked in the show notes. Ep 93Never Repeat Yourself Again: Tips to Help Kids Listen Every Time

Dr Cathryn is tackling a topic that might seem simple but is actually a big deal for little ones: understanding time.Hear about Marcus, a 3.5-year-old who loves the swings but struggles when it's time to leave. Why? Because his mom is giving a warning like this: “We’re leaving in 5 minutes.”Kids can't see or touch time, so they don't understand it like adults do. But as they grow, they start to get it through routines and daily patterns. Today’s Tips:1. Use Sequences: Tell your child, "First park, then lunch, then playdate." It helps them understand the order of events.2. Visual Timers: These show how much time is left in a way kids can see.3. Sand Timers: A simple tool that helps kids see time passing.4. OK WAKE UP Clocks: Helps your child know when it's okay to get out of bed by showing a green light.5. Bonus Tip: Use calendars or a bead necklace to countdown to special days. Thanks for tuning in to Toddlers Made Easy, where we make the tough parts of parenting easier!Interested in more tools and big ideas to help during these challenging but crucial years? Ep 82REVISIT: Overcoming Bedtime Fears

Is your toddler’s desire to delay dozing off driving you to distraction?Bedtime fears usually start at around two years and may last several years. They happen very commonly because children spend their days in imaginative play, and it is tough for them to turn that off at bedtime. Even though there are many valid reasons for your toddler to fight at bedtime, you still need a chance to get some rest. Your needs matter and you have less to give when you need to recharge. So there is no need to feel guilty about wanting your child to sleep so you can take some time for yourself. In this episode, I talk about bedtime fears and how to overcome them. I go into why children have those fears and explain why they tend to happen from a developmental perspective. Stay tuned to learn how to lovingly, respectfully, and effectively manage your toddler’s bedtime fears.Five things likely to contribute to your toddler’s bedtime fears: Young kids experience separation anxiety, so it makes sense that they fuss when you leave the room. Toddlers tend to be defiant by nature because they want more control over their world. A toddler’s brain is still developing. So they have so little control over their emotions. Toddlers do not understand the concept of time. So when you tell them you will see them in the morning, it seems forever away. The frontal lobe of a toddler’s brain is still developing. That is the part that allows us to reason, problem-solve, and make plans. So they are not able to talk themselves down. Show highlights: Five things likely to contribute to bedtime fears from a developmental perspective. Why is an early bedtime best? The benefits of creating a short bedtime routine. Some effective ways to manage your toddler’s bedtime fears. The importance of creating a responsible and healthy bedtime routine. How to take charge of your child’s bedtime routine. Some calming strategies that you can teach your child to develop. How to use deep breathing in the present moment. How to stay on the same team as your child. Some easy steps to help you manage bedtimes without getting wound up. I have a bite-size course coming up soon on managing bedtime like a pro. I’ll tell you more in a future episode. Ep 75Q&A Special: Tackling Toddler Myths, Sibling Prep, Behavior Bumps, and Potty Puzzles

Question 1: Dealing with False Accusations- A parent shares concern about their 2.5-year-old falsely claiming to be hit by them.Answer: Understand that toddlers often blur fantasy and reality. It's their way of expressing discomfort with parental disapproval. Focus on the underlying emotions rather than the details, and reassure them with love and understanding.Question 2: Preparing for a New Sibling- A parent asks for advice on their toddler who doesn’t want a new sibling.Answer: Early in the pregnancy, it's okay to wait before discussing the new sibling. When the time comes, involve your toddler in preparations. Use the EASY approach: Evaluate your calmness, Acknowledge feelings, Set boundaries, and offer Yes alternatives. Focus on positive redirection.Question 4: Potty Training Challenges- A parent struggles with their 3.5-year-old's reluctance to start potty training.Answer: Pause the potty training discussion for a while. Model toilet use, focus on pre-potty skills, and choose a start date for training. Make the bathroom environment fun and inviting. Use a no-pressure approach and understand the child's perspective.Links and resources:Follow Dr. Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyCheck out our bestselling online course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseOur NEW Potty Training Made Easy course is here!Get the Dynamic Duo: Toddler Tamining + Potty Training courses and save $20Does potty training terrify you? Ep 71Prevent Picky Eating

Navigating picky eating in toddlers is a common challenge rooted in their developmental journey toward food independence and exploration of tastes. To ease this phase, it's crucial to avoid pressuring a toddler to eat and instead adopt a relaxed approach. Create a positive mealtime atmosphere by emphasizing enjoyable family gatherings, focusing on the meal experience over food, and keeping mealtimes technology-free for bonding. Steer clear of pressure-inducing phrases and avoid labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad.' Encouraging children to make some food choices can fulfill their need for independence, and remember that your role is to decide what, where, and when they eat while a child determines how much they eat. Involving kids in meal planning, cooking, and grocery shopping can engage them with food. Patience is key, as changes in eating habits take time. If picky eating is accompanied by significant behavioral challenges, consulting a doctor is advisable.Actionable takeaways:- Avoid pressuring kids to eat.- Create a positive mealtime atmosphere.- Refrain from using pressure-inducing phrases.- Encourage children to make food choices.- Involve kids in meal planning and cooking.Links and resources:Follow Dr. Potty Learning Vs Potty Training: What's the Difference?

Picture this: Mom sees two and a half year old Johnny squirming and doing the I need to go pee dance. So she tells him to go sit on the potty. Johnny ignores his mom and a minute later he pees in his pants. Needless to say, Johnny's mom was irritated. Does this sound at all familiar? Pressuring a child to use the potty, well, it often backfires. It's like trying to brush a toddler's teeth while they clamp their mouth shut. Let's face it, nobody likes being forced or pressured into anything and potty training is no exception. So is a parent led approach to potty training really the most effective way to say goodbye to diapers? Let’s consider the power of a no pressure approach, why it's the game changer parents need, and how it empowers our little ones to conquer the potty journey! 7 Must-Dos Before Starting Potty Training

When you were learning to drive a car, did you just show up on the day of the exam? No, you practiced and prepared for it in stages. Turns out the same approach works with potty training too. We know that prepping a child for changes or events can significantly reduce stress and increase coping skills. But we ignore or forget about this concept when it comes to potty training, which is probably one of the most significant events in a child's early life! Typically we tell our kids, “Okay today we are going to start potty training!” Or maybe we prep them a day or two before. But there is so much more to be done to make potty training easier for your child, and for you! Pre-potty training creates a smoother, easier, and really less stressful experience. If you are approaching the potty training stage, then grab a notebook pen, and let’s dive in! Ep 46Become the Big-Hearted Parent Your Child Needs (and Deserves)

After working as a pediatrician for more than a quarter of a century, I have learned many big lessons. One of which is that parents are naturally big-hearted. They're loving, kind, and willing to do just about anything when it comes to their kids. So what does it mean to parent with a big heart? This approach is particularly important for toddlers. When I think of big-hearted parenting, I imagine shedding the negative lens of the terrible twos, and instead, embracing toddlers as incredible, wonderfully unique little individuals who require our support, guidance, and understanding. Let’s dive into big-hearted parenting together and help our children feel seen, heard, understood, and valued!
