Today we’re continuing our study of the three main rapture texts in the New Testament, moving from John 14:1–3 to 1 Corinthians 15:50–58. This is the great resurrection chapter where Paul defends bodily resurrection against the Corinthians’ dualistic view that only the spirit was good while the body was evil. They believed in Jesus’ Resurrection but denied their own future resurrection, so Paul proves that if there’s no general resurrection, then even Jesus hasn’t been raised.
What captivates me most about this passage is Paul’s revelation of a “mystery”—newly revealed information that had never been disclosed before. This mystery is stunning: “We shall not all sleep, but we will all be changed.” For the first time in human history, Paul reveals there will be an entire generation that won’t taste physical death! This transformation will happen “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye”—either the time it takes to blink or for light to reflect off your eye—but either way, it’s instantaneously fast.
Notice there are no signs given for this event, unlike Matthew chapter 24’s detailed signs for the Second Coming. The Rapture is signless and can happen at any moment. Our current bodies of “flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,” so we need new imperishable, immortal bodies like Jesus’ glorious resurrection body. But here’s what I love most: Paul always gives practical application. The Rapture should have a “motivating influence” on our lives, making us “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” because our labor isn’t in vain—Jesus is coming!
