Is there a co-worker that you don’t really trust? Maybe you’ve been told things they’ve said or done, or maybe someone you like and trust has warned you away from them?
Whatever the reason, you are resisting getting to know them and interact with them, and you could be missing out on a beneficial relationship, and you’re helping create a toxic work environment.
It’s easy to define people based on the opinions of those we trust. What if they’re wrong? What if it’s just their opinion that’s flawed, not that person they’ve warned you about?
If you work as part of a team, and especially if you’re in a leadership position on that team, this kind of behavior is poison.
Start by not buying into the gossip, and then take the next step – gently challenge the gossiper on the lack of ethics they’re showing. One of the best workplace detoxifiers is to help gossips learn to behave better. And if they won’t, at least don’t aid and abet their toxicity.
