Think about the times the voice inside your head said something nice about you. You might have to think hard about it – our brain’s negativity bias makes it dish up far more negative thoughts about us than positive ones.

A National Science Foundation study found that nearly 80% of a person’s thoughts are negative and 95% of those are repetitive thoughts. What kinds of thoughts?

  • (Specific co-worker) hates me.
  • I have bad hair.
  • I’ll never get this done in time.
  • This will never work.
  • Things never work out for me.
  • I’m not good enough.

But the good ones pop up now and then. What are they? Really think about what your brain spits out about you that’s good. Things like:

  • I reached that goal…I rock!
  • I’m trustworthy.
  • I’m a good friend.

Write down the things about yourself that you love, take a picture of your list and set it as the wallpaper on your phone. Look at it several times a day as a reminder of who you really are. As you do this, you’re creating new neural pathways and new, more positive repetitive thoughts. Because you are trustworthy and a good friend and you do rock – isn’t it time you believed those things about yourself?
