TRUE CRIME - On this episode we talk about a behemoth of a man and one of the most famous serial killers ever; main subject in the TV series Mindhunter and known as The Co-Ed Killer, Ed Kemper. As with most of these cases Ed had a shoddy upbringing and was brought up in a single parent abusive home. His murderous predilections started to show early as he killed pets and small animals. This very troubled man became one of the most well known killers in the world; not least because of his gruesome technique and the manipulation of the bodies of his victims after death. Arrested at just 25 he spent the rest of his life int he same prison as Charles Manson; where he still resides today aged 71. His surrender, behaviour and demeanour after arrest led him to be a trustee and eventually help the FBI with their profiling work, as we saw in Mindhunter.A strange man with a dark psyche; and joining me to talk about Ed Kemper is comedian Sean Nolan. TRUE CRIME - On this episode we talk about a Hollywood starlet who died long before her time in very suspicious circumstances. Brittany Murphy came to Hollywood all the way from New Jersey and starred in loads of hit movies in the 90s and 2000s; the persona she portrayed on screen made her untimely death seem like just another tale of excess.The truth is so much stranger though; her marriage to Simon Monjack, a British Director and Screenwriter; was filled with misfortune, fraud and she had to care for him through long term illness which he allegedly used to manipulate people. Brittany's death was only months before Simon's and both deaths had almost identical causes. Toxins in their new house were initially to blame but support for a government whistleblower could have been the impetus to silence her.A very strange tale of manipulation and fraud and, hopefully, it will give you a more informed view of who Brittany Murphy was. Her findings confirmed what they believed and were adopted into the canon of many of these organisations the most famous of which was The Theosophical Society. Born in San Fransisco and raised in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee led a varied and bizarre life coming from winning dance competitions and taking part in gang fights on the rooftops of Kowloon to majoring in Drama and creating his own martial artform; Lee left an indellible mark on modern culture.Trained in Kung Fu as a wayward youth, Bruce Lee showed skill and discipline for martial arts. After moving to America he began his own school teaching a modified version on Wing Chun and participating in competitions and showcases. It was at one of these competitions he was discovered and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood were within his reach. He modified his martial art into what he called Jeet Kune Do and it was particularly aesthetic on the silver screen. His high profile roles and movies pioneered kung fu on screen and captivated the imagination of the world.His fame led him to the company of some of the most famous people in the world, and he even took some of them on as students. His blossoming movie career was skyrocketing and he wanted to capitalise on it by producing as much as he could. But Bruce died just weeks before his smash hit Enter The Dragon was released in 1973. His death, in hindsight, was quite suspicious and people coouldnt believe his immensely fit physique could be flawed. But a headache in a costars apartment led to him dying in his sleep and leaving behind many unanswered questions.Since his death his legacy has been preserved and his death somewhat overlooked. Bruce Lee has gone down in history as one of the many great potentials struck down in their prime. Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin were the original three dying at the end of the 60s and leaving behind them the legacy of one of the wildest and most progressive periods in human history. Their passing sounded a death knell for the counterculture and its hopes for the future.Fast forward to the 90s and a seeming revival of 60 cultural progressiveness and also the tragic death of Kurt Cobain by suicide. Cobain's death reinvigorated the 27 Club mythos and people started to wonder what was it about the age 27 that caused so much heartache coupled with unbridled success? In recent years others have been added to the roster of the 27 Club like most recently Amy Winehouse but others still are being posthumously gilded with the moniker of 'worthy' of entry. Jean Michel Basquiat, a new york artist who died in the 80s was added just a few years ago; and actor Anton Yelchin was considered after his untimely death in a car accident. The involvement of those original three, Jim, Jimi and Janis, in the Laurel Canyon movement of the 60s and the infiltration of counter culture,​ could have something to do with it. Their deaths were​ also quite suspicious, either by overdose, or suicide, or both, and​ Jim Morrison may not be dead at all. Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs to combat their corrosive effect on the youth of America. Others claim it was an attempt to maintain control on a population that was becoming wise to the marinations of the political elite and the culture those new citizens were growing up in had harmless party drugs at its centre.Laws and governmental organisations that exist today were created in this time and in the 1980s during the crack cocaine epidemic plaguing American cities; Reagan announced the Zero Tolerance policy which led to hundreds of thousands of young men and women being incarcerated for much longer than necessary. The prison industrial complex grew from this and instead of compassion for addiction, a punitive and unproductive policy of mass incarceration began in America.Vilifying drug addicts is one thing, but interfering in the politics of the countries where the drugs are grown throws a suspicious light on the motives behind this so called War on Drugs. The DEA and CIA were in the headlines thanks to whistle blowers like Gary Webb.
