Nor faint when you are reproved by Him; 6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He flogs every son whom He receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom <em>his</em> father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them. Shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He <em>disciplines us</em> for our benefit [our good], so that we may share His holiness. 11 And all discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful, but to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Hebrews 12:5–11</p> <p>4 “[Because] when the fullness of the time came, God [the Father] sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God [our Father] sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father! [Our Father!]” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God [great expectations!].” Galatians 4:4–7</p> <h5><strong><em>The Baptist Larger Catechism</em>, Q. 67: What is adoption?</strong></h5> <p><span class="TextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0" lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0"><strong>A: </strong>Adoption is an act of the free grace of God [the Father] in and for His only Son Jesus Christ, by which all those who are justified are received into the number of His children, have His name put upon them, have the Spirit of His Son given to them, are under His fatherly care [and discipline], are welcomed to all the liberties and privileges of the sons of God, and are made heirs of <em>all</em> the promises and fellow heirs with Christ in glory.</span></span></p> <h5><strong><em>An Orthodox Catechism</em>, Q. 80: <span class="TextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0" lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0">How does the Lord's Supper remind you and assure you that you share in Christ's one sacrifice on the cross and in all his gifts?</span></span><br /></strong></h5> <p><span class="TextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0" lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" data-contrast="auto"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW65515402 BCX0"><strong>A.</strong> In this way: Christ has commanded me and all believers to eat this broken bread and to drink this cup.
