Ep 132#127 - Spring 2022 Anime Season Review!

As the Summer season trucks on, we're here to be late as usual and cover the absolutely STACKED spring 2022 anime season! By our rough and unscientific analysis, spring tends to be the season each year that goes all-out and 2022 is no different with the likes of SPY X Family, Ya Boi Kongming, and RPG Real Estate knocking people's socks off.... or not? Hosted by Bill (@wbforeman999), Sarah (@uniquexharmony), and Tobias (@reverend_tobias)! If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts! Ep 131#126 - Macross Frontier: The Movies | The False Songstress & The Wings of Farewell

Macross Frontier finally came to the states officially for the first time! Fathom Events and Big West brought us the two theatrical films The False Songstress and The Wings of Farewell in June, 2022. Long-time Frontier fan Sarah takes newbie Austin on a musical journey into our review of both films. This is another long one since we're covering both films AND Anime Expo decided to drop a ton of Macross news items on our heads so not only do we have one news segment but TWO! Anyway, you like listening to our voices, right? I certainly hope so. And if you don't, there's plenty of Ranka and Sheryl interspersed throughout the episode to make up for it. Enjoy our review of Macross Frontier the Movies! Hosted by Sarah (@uniquexharmony) and Austin (@bebopshock). If you enjoy this or any other episode, leave us a Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts! Ep 128#123 - Night on the Galactic Railroad (& other Kenji Miyazawa anime)

Put on your otter-skin coats for a journey into some classic Japanese children's literature. On this episode, Austin and Bill are talking about the 1985 classic anime movie Night on the Galactic Railroad based on the influential children's novel by Kenji Miyazawa. We're also talking about some adjacent anime including 1997's Spring and Chaos and 2012's The Life of Budori Gusuko. In the pre-show we talk about what we've been watching in the current anime season including Spy X Family, Ya Boi Kongming, and Birdy Wing. We recorded this a few weeks back so we're not completely up-to-date but it's good enough. Anyways, hope you enjoy the episode! Why are they cats? I guess you'll find out. E

Here it is! Our Definitive Top 15 ranking of the best anime movies of the 2010s. Two years and 20+ episodes later, we finally came through! Please enjoy this fun episode that pretty well defines our tastes as a podcast. Shout out to the Insert Credit Podcast for the template that we borrowed to do our rankings. If you have an issue with our list, cry to us on social media about it! Do it! For those that don't want to listen and just want our list, you can check it out on Austin's Anime-Planet profile here. Published between 2013 and 2014, this is one of Junji Ito's more recent works and many of the stories therein were adapted into the 2018 anime series, The Junji Ito Collection. Ep 125#120 - Girls’ Last Tour feat. BokuSatchii

To continue our recent seasonal theme of reviewing anime with snow in them (see: Fate/Zero), we're back with a review of the post-apocalyptic iyashikei (meaning healing) series, 2017's Girls' Last Tour! But wait, is it possible for an anime to be post-apocalyptic and an iyashikei series at the same time? Excellent question. Listen to the episode and find out. Austin hosts the show this week joined by long-time absentee member, Andrew, who provides commentary on the series' iyashikei elements as well as its World War aesthetics. Additionally, we have a brand new guest to the podcast; anime panelist and blogger Robby a.k.a. BokuSatchii. You may know him from Twitter and/or his numerous panels at Anime Weekend Atlanta, NakaCon, Anime Lockdown, and Crunchyroll Expo Online. Robby has been a friend of the show for a good bit and was happy to come on to discuss his favorite anime of the 2010s. Ep 124#119 - Best Anime WE Watched in 2021

We watched a LOT of anime in 2021, and not all of it was released then. So instead of doing a "Best of 2021" list, we just had a casual conversation about some of the shows we watched including Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Hinamatsuri, My Life as a Villainess, Wave! Listen to Me, Sound of the Sky, and Giant Robo; and of course some actual 2021 releases like Odd Taxi, Godzilla Singular Point, Zombie Land Saga R, Pui Pui Molcar, and Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (yes, you legally have to write out the full title). Ep 123Kotatsu Corner #3 - IDK, Post-Holiday Title.

Almost a year to the date we released our last Kotatsu Corner episode, but here's another one! Kotatsu Corner is our side-show where we talk about non-anime related crap that we just have to get out of our system. On this one, we talk about our holiday season, what we've been enjoying lately, some highlights of 2021, and what we're looking forward to in 2022. Topics include Genshin Impact, Spider-Man, BlazBlue, Tales of Arise, The Lunar Chronicles, and audience submitted reflections on what media got them through 2021. Ep 122#118 - Fate/Zero

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and/or Saturday with your friends and loved ones! To celebrate the holiday season, we're covering an entry in the long running Fate franchise for the first time, 2011's Fate/Zero, based on the light novel written by Gen Urobuchi, created by TYPE-MOON and animated by ufotable. Our reasons for making this our Christmas special are flimsy at best, but it has a lot of snow in it so, sue us (please don't, we're poor). Fate/Zero is a prequel series to the story of Fate/stay Night but works as a standalone anime that you can enjoy with any or no familiarity with the Fate series. But is this a good place to start? How does this series hold up 10 years later? Who would we want to summon as Heroic Spirits to fight for us in the Holy Grail War? Find out now! In the pre-show, Austin talks about seeing Macross Plus in theaters, Ryan talks about submitting panels to Momocon 2022, Will talks about watching Miyazaki's films for the first time in order, and other brief non-sequiturs. Ep 121#117 - Detective Conan! Franchise Intro & Review of Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths

One truth prevails, and that truth is that Bill is a huge Detective Conan fan. Yet, he's never had a chance to gush about it on the podcast. That changes today with our first podcast on the long-running mystery series, Detective Conan a.k.a. Case Closed! Bill introduces the franchise with a historical breakdown and explanation of what the essence of Conan is. Then, Bill and Austin review Movie 9: Strategy Above the Depths, Bill's chosen title to introduce to a total newb. Before the review, Austin and Bill talk about what they've been watching and some current event news including Netflix Cowboy Bebop reactions, the passing of Keiko Nobumoto, the announcement of Netflix's Bubble, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure returning, and Austin being a guest on The Film Buds Podcast talking about Tokyo Godfathers. Ep 120#116 - Junji Ito‘s Uzumaki (manga)

We're back this week with a story that will make your head spin, around and around, like a.... well, you know. We're talking about the 1998 horror manga by Junji Ito, Uzumaki. The works of Junji Ito have grown in popularity significantly over the last few years with the re-releases of many of his major works in the United States. To celebrate the 2021 spooky season, Tori, Bill, and Austin talk about Ito as a creator, Tori "liking him before he was cool," Bill's binge reading, and of course the main event, Uzumaki! Ep 119#115 - Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011) and The Movie: Rebellion (2013)

10 years ago, a sweet pastel-pink magical girl and her saccharine adventures took the anime world by storm, and then promptly threw us all into a spiral of despair and Love(paper)craftian horror. On this episode, we're talking about the 2011 modern anime classic, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and it's divisive 2013 sequel film Rebellion. Produced by Studio Shaft and written by the now infamous Gen Urobuchi, Madoka set a new standard for the magical girl genre in the 21st century, for better or worse. Ep 118#114 - Otaku Unite! (2004) Anime Documentary Review

Would you believe that this episode was recorded AN ENTIRE YEAR AGO?! Because of production schedules, editing issues, school, work, an international pandemic, and generalize malaise, it took us forever to release this. Fear not true believer, the tales of Otaku Unite! are timeless. Actually, no, that's a lie. Join us in our second Otaku-mentaries episode covering the 2004 anime and fandom documentary, Otaku Unite! (listen to our first episode on Akihabara Geeks here). Otaku Unite! is a bizarre spectacle of half insightful anime history and half inexplicable sideshows. How little has changed in the anime community in 17 years! Listen to Sully, Austin, Bill, and Tobias guide you through this magic mirror into the anime community of the early 2000s. Also, as we do, we use this documentary as a springboard to talk about anime fandom issues in the present. Enjoy! He's joined by fellow guardians, Will from Mid Shelf Gaming, and first-time guest, Anna from the OSMCast!, another excellent podcast you should listen to. They discuss the interesting release history of the film, the life of living legend Megumi Hayashibara, the fact that this is only kind-of a Christmas movie, why cats shouldn't eat candy, and how this film connects to Anna's job?! Stuff your stockings with this first episode of Third Impact Anime for 2021, and we sure hope this year is infinitely better than the last one. Ep 105#102 - Kaiba (2008)

Wow guys, this one took a while to come out! We recorded this way back in the far off time of June 2020 and had to delay it to make space for our 100th episode celebration. He is joined in his body-swapping adventures by Tobias and Edwin, as they take a look at Osamu Tezuka's influence, the transhumanist themes, and the surreal visuals of the series, as well as plot Kaiba's place in Yuasa's catalog. Ep 103#100 - Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) and 100th Episode Celebration!

Wow we finally made it episode 100! What better way to celebrate than by discussing the anime our name comes from... Neon Genesis Evangelion! What can really be said about Eva that hasn't been said already? Who knows, but we're going to give it a shot! The tales of Shinji, Rei, and Asuka have captivated the hearts and minds of audiences for 25 years and counting, with a new film on the horizon that will hopefully be released... eventually. After reflecting on making it to 100 episodes, we give an overview of the series followed by discussing how we first got into NGE, our favorite characters, the series' major themes, and what we think audiences young and old can get out of NGE in 2020 and beyond. (Note: Evangelion is an incredibly dense topic and for that reason, we elected to limit our scope to just discussing the 1995 TV series for this episode. Podcasts on the 2 original films and the Rebuild films will follow... one day!) Thank you so much to everyone who has listened to us, attended our panels, or otherwise supported us over the years. We'll continue striving to make the best podcast we can. Here's to another 100! Special thanks to everyone who contributed to our "Congratulations" chorus, including an incredibly special cameo from Amanda Winn Lee, director of the ADV & Manga Entertainment Evangelion dubs and the original voice of Rei Ayanami! Huge thanks to Amanda for helping us celebrate. Ep 102#99 - Interview with Anime Scholar Helen McCarthy!

We're back again with another interview! For this episode, Sully and Austin had the chance to sit down with noted anime scholar Helen McCarthy! Helen has been a pioneer in the English-speaking anime community for almost 40 years, having brought anime programming to UK sci-fi conventions, founding and editing Anime UK, and authoring over a dozen books on anime fandom and research. Helen co-authored the monumental Anime Encyclopedia with Jonathan Clements, now in its third edition, written one of the definitive biographies of the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka, which was published in English, Japanese, and Korean, and had the chance to interview Hayao Miyaki in-person for her book Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation. Sully and Austin reflect on Helen’s beginnings in anime fandom, what it took to publish the world’s largest English-language anime resource, and the importance of diverse voices in global anime scholarship. Helen also gives a sneak peak into her upcoming book: a collection of scholarly essays on the works of Leiji Matsumoto!
