Why Go Niebuhr? with Scott Paeth
EAre you ready to get real with Niebuhr? Scott Paeth, professor of ethics at DePaul in Chicago, is on for this edition of the Why Go? series. Scott is also the author of The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians. How, as Christians, are we to engage in society? How are we to understand human nature? How should we understand the nature of evil and sin? All of these questions and more are covered in this very timely episode. Follow Scott on Facebook. Theological Tailgating with Phil and Tripp
EThis is an audiological taste of what happened at the first annual Theology Beer Camp. During this special session of theological tailgating Philip Clayton and Tripp got all processy and talked about Jesus, God, creation, science – all while a cornhole tournament happened below! If after listening to this you’ve got some questions about process theology you should let us know! We will be doing an intro to process episode and want your input. So send us a tweet, or email us your questions. Or, you could just join the Homebrewed Community (click, “Join the Community”above) and get access to the secret Facebook group and submit your questions there. This session is meant to push process people towards Christian categories and questions, and push the Christian people in the direction of process, and to be heretical on both sides. This is meant to be really funny and serious constructive theology. Phil and Tripp take classical Christian questions, mix them with a little process thought, and see what happens. They start with Jesus’s relationship to God, God’s relationship to creation, and the resurrection. Then they tackle the relationship of science and Christianity, the importance of the historical narrative of Israel, reverse salvation from sanctification, relational eschatology, and how the Jewish notion of Messiah is really processy. Plus, Tripp tells you what two worldviews/theologies irritate him the most. We’ve got a secret and we’re having a hard time keeping it to ourselves. If you want to find out what the secret is, you should really text BEERMEJESUS to 44222 to be the first to know what the secret is. There have been many leaks about this secret, and while the leaks are real, the news is fake. So to make sure you get the best information, you should text BEERMEJESUS to 44222. Have we got some zesty news for you…it’s LIVE PODCAST time! This time, Tripp is heading up to Santa Barbara, CA where the Way Collective is sponsoring the Believing Skepticast at the phenomenal Third Window Brewing Co on March 2! Will we talk about what is happening with religion in the 21st century? Will we address navigating the tricky waters of faith and doubt? Will we chat while giving a cheers to one another with a tasty craft brew in-hand? The answer is: YES. This is a FREE event, but you do need to register. Click here for more info. Why Go Barthian? with Travis McMaken
EThis episode of The Theology Nerd podcast is the Why Go Barthian? Webinar with Travis McMaken. This is another installment of our ongoing Why Go? series. In this episode you will get 5 reasons why you should go Barthian, plus: What does it mean to be Barthian? Barth didn’t want people to be Barthians, he wanted people to be theologians who spoke critically and carefully about Jesus. The three phases of Barth’s career Being a Barthian does not mean being neo-Orthodox. Barth was not a lone ranger, but was part of a broader dialectical theology movement. It’s important to ask who these other people are, what their shared assumptions were, what were the things they rejected together, and how do each of them remain uniquely faithful to the movement as a whole. And what exactly is dialectical theology anyway? Make sure to hit up Travis on twitter @WTravisMcMaken and check out his website. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Questions for the Believing Skeptic: What Time is It?
EThis is a special bonus episode from the Questions for the Believing Skeptic course. We are in a period where the confidence of rationalistic accounts of religion don’t work anymore. There has been an explosion of religion expression that doesn’t fit neatly into any box. As good philosophers and theologian, this new situation requires trying to come up with words and thoughts to make sense of it. Most people who have at least one foot in the door of a religious tradition haven’t escaped being and shaped by this cultural phenomenon. We don’t have the possibility of existing in a world that is enchanted or shaped by one religious narrative anymore. Even those who are ready to rock and roll for their religious team or tribe do so today in a way that is significantly different than before. We are now, more than ever, both a believer and a skeptic. How do we navigate this new landscape? To help guide us through this new situation the believer and the skeptic must ask the following questions: what time is it? is there help for my unbelief? what is the new normal? who do you say that I am? This episode is a snippet from the first lecture asking the question, “what time is it?” To become a Homebrewed Christianity Bishop or Elder, and get this plus much, much more, click on “Join the Community” on our website. By becoming an Elder you will essentially get this class for half off, and have access to every other class we do this year for free. Of course we hope you stay around. Morgan Freeman is HERE + we talk about Miracles #StoryOfGod
EOn this special edition of the Story of God-cast you will hear from the one and only Morgan Freeman! It is kind of like talking to the voice of God about God. He joined fellow producer of The Story of God on the National Geographic Channel, Lori McCreary, for a conversation with Tripp about the series. Afterwards Barry and Tripp dig into the sixth and final episode of the series on Miracles. Over the course of the discussion miracles are used to unpack divine action, chance, and the power of the mind. We tackle the rather amazing segment of the show on the passover, the Vatican’s investigation into the miraculous, gambling in Ancient Rome, the early harmony of science and religion in Islam, Barry’s time as a feng shui rider, the connection of prayer to healing, Tripp’s problem with David Hume, and most importantly [hint sarcastically] how “life is like a journey filled with pot holes.” If you love us make sure to go to iTunes & subscribe/rate the show. In this episode you will get… * Adam Phillips & Andy Goebel shall be in the house talking about their church plants getting kicked out of one denomination and welcomed into another for being welcoming. * Phil Snider, GLAD award recipient and postmodern pulpit practitioner, joins us for some sermonic convo and a Preach Off vs Tripp. * There’s a display of Tripp’s lack of cultural awareness, Amy’s endless reservoir of fear & Christian’s excellent French accent. * We have some heart felt tunes from Andra Moran & Trey and Carter from Populis join us for some jams. This podcast was sponsored by Phillips Theological Seminary. Josh Linton was in the house for Phillips Our Zesty Sponsor and got everyone their first two drinks. Can you imagine a cooler place to go to school? Religion + Politics Pitfalls #TNT
ETripp & Greg talking in 2013 It is time to start preparing for the Presidential Election! Ok that might not be super exciting news BUT that won’t spotty rest of your water cooler from talking religion and politics in the near future. Luckily our favorite ex-pastor and religious journalist Greg Horton has agreed to join the podcast for some nerdy fun. In this episode we talk about our not-so-Christian nation, the confederate flag, USA flag in sanctuaries, wedding cakes, love of science, the most BA Pope, how to apply a religious label and other goodies. Listen and then holla back on the SpeakPipe to let us know what we should talk about next on an election year update. Greg Horton is a freelance writer and professor of English, Humanities, and Philosophy. He lives in downtown Oklahoma City in a substandard apartment that befits his status as a member of the fourth estate. He has published more than 800 articles (for real money) on topics as wide ranging as religion, wine, travel, politics, culture, music, and arts. He is most often on twitter, but fb remains open on his browser, too: twitter.com/expastor. It may be that he will finally update his blog soon, but since it doesn’t earn money, maybe not: typepad.com/theparish. Over a period of about 15 years, Horton worked for three different church staffs in three different traditions, including a brief, mind-numbing stint as a senior pastor. Somehow, he has managed to turn degrees in Bible (B.S.) and Religion (M.A.) into actual non-religious credentials. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
