S1 Ep 486#486 Atypical Workout Ideas

E

For this episode, Russ Jarret and I reconvene at TYP Central to talk about some out-of-the-box exercise ideas, why variety is crucial for progress, how adaptation happens, micro workouts, doing old things in new ways, optimal results with suboptimal resources and lots more. Enjoy. *Oh, and by the way, there’s a highly embarrassing story (shared by Russ about me, near the start) that I wanted edited out but apparently, it stayed in because Melissa and Russ think it’s hilarious.russelljarrett.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 485#485 BioAge and Health Span

E

Resident TYP Exercise Physiologist Russ Jarrett and I sit down and discuss the science and philosophy of living in a healthy body for as long as possible; thriving (instead of surviving) into old(er) age. Lots of nuggets in this one. Enjoy.russelljarrett.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 484#484 How I Stay Younger Than My Age

E

For whatever reason, I’m regularly asked about my personal health habits; how I eat, exercise, socialise, sleep, recover, manage my mind and emotions, stay lean and keep on track. And while there’s no real magic (and I wouldn’t recommend my operating system to anyone else), I guess what’s somewhat atypical (for an Australian male) is that I’ve never had a beer (or any alcohol), never smoked, never used a recreational drug, never been married (not good or bad, just atypical), haven’t had a ‘job’ for three decades, rarely get stressed and I’ve worked out almost every day of my life since I was fourteen. This is not a particularly ground-breaking or life-changing conversation but it answers some of the questions I’m asked often and some of you might find it interesting. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 483#483 The Bloke Who Inspired Superman

E

For more than 25 years Perry Cross has been unable to breathe. A ventilator does it for him 24-7. Neither has he been able to move any part of his body, other than his head. At the age of 19 Perry was severely injured in a rugby union tackle. He used the devastating quadriplegia diagnosis to launch an inspiring career, selflessly devoting his life to driving awareness and research into spinal injury. He set up the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation with the primary aim of finding a cure for paralysis. The Foundation has raised more than $11 million dollars to date, kick-starting several major research projects in Australia. For me, talking with people like Perry reinforces how precious life is, how amazing humans can be, the power of love and how light can shine through the great darkness. I feel very grateful and humbled to have spoken with him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 482#482 Dandelions and Orchids

E

Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is a Parenting Expert, Author, Researcher and Child Psychologist. Or as I call her, Kid-Ologist. Raising, guiding, empowering, teaching and understanding children, is her thing. The science (art?) of raising happy, healthy, functional kids (how to be a great parent) is her passion, research and career. This conversation covered a vast amount of territory and as a non-parent, I found her thoughts, ideas, stories and insights, fascinating. We spoke about brain stuff, mind stuff, nurture vs. nature, genetic stuff, programming, the education system and her son the orchid and her other son, the dandelion (it will make sense when you listen). You’ll love it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 481#481 The Bogan Dietitian

E

Tara Diversi is a self-professed bogan. A funny, interesting, academic, intelligent bogan… but a bogan nonetheless. She’s also the President and Chair of Dietitians Australian. Fortunately (or not), we didn’t do another deep dive into nutrition (we’ve done enough lately) but we did talk about a sh*t-load of other fascinating things, like… (1) treating trauma with ice-water swimming (she is the first Australian woman to swim an ice mile) (2) a medical condition which means that Tara dislocates joints daily (and has had more than twenty operations) (3) sports which require fat gain to improve performance (4) Tara’s initial degree in beer and boys (5) why we both like work, but not jobs (6) creating a diverse career (7) connecting with an audience (😎 why she’s not sure how to say her own name… and lots more. S1 Ep 480#480 Still Cheeky

E

At sixteen, Ciara Nelson was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and given virtually no chance of survival. And then she met amazing Neurosurgeon Charlie Teo, who had other ideas. We first chatted with Ciara on TYP as a cheeky nineteen year-old and now, as a fully qualified grown-up (21), she’s still cheeky and still giving me a hard time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

E

A couple of months ago, I recorded an episode called ‘Becoming Ungiveupable’ and it went nuts. Lots of messages, lots of nice words and about double our normal listens. Well, this instalment of TYP is that ep. without the 15 minutes of fluff, small talk and chit-chat between Melissa and I. Just the get-your-shit-together stuff. I was recently on the ‘Simply Practically Human’ Podcast with Mark LeBusque and because I’m innately lazy, I’m back in the TYP hammock and doing another podcast ‘share’. S1 Ep 477#477 Ten Hard Questions (Part 2)

E

I assigned Tiff the task of asking me ten hard (but broadly relevant) questions about the human condition. Questions that I hadn’t been asked before on a podcast. She pulled it off. I had no idea what questions were coming before she asked them live during the recording. Of course, I banged on for too long, so we’ve made this a two-part-er. As always, this conversation is not a prescription or personal advice but rather, a curious bloke in flannel thinking out loud about some interesting issues. S1 Ep 475#475 My Godson's Mother

E

Tara Jarrett and I have been friends for thirty years. She worked for me as a PT and I lectured to Certificate 3 and 4 Fitness students for her company in the 90’s (when I was extremely young). Tara is an innovator, creator, survivor and visionary, who has consistently found a way to keep reinventing herself, to build successful businesses and to turn her creative ideas into real-world products and services. She built her first successful company (High Energy Network which became Australian Fitness Academy) at 22 and she has an intuitive and instinctive understanding of what people want in terms of their ‘money-for-service’ experience. This was more of a catch-up with an old friend than any kind of ground-breaking inspiration session, but I think you’ll enjoy it. I loved it. *I also MC’d Tara’s wedding to Russ and I’m Godfather (what could go wrong?) to their son, Mitch.atpilates.studioSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

E

Hi Team. This episode is a co-share, meaning… I recently sat down with my old Mate Andrew Jobling on his Podcast ‘The Health Puzzle’ and we waxed lyrical (whatever that means) about all-things happiness, purpose, fulfilment, self-worth, covid (sorry), life-long learning, perseverance and the silly idea of needing someone to ‘complete us’. S1 Ep 471#471 Climbing Out of the Darkness

E

We don’t always know what people are going through. Dayne Beams is a Collingwood premiership player and best and fairest winner, Brisbane Captain and best and fairest winner, All Australian... and for some of that journey, a bloke in the grip of addiction, depression, anxiety and desperation. This is one of the rawest, realest, revealing-est chats I’ve had on TYP. It’s full of fascinating insights, stories and intuitive wisdom from a bloke who’s working hard to live a life of purpose, joy and gratitude. E

I thought my job (what job?) was weird and atypical but I’m positively boring and common compared with Australia’s number one stand up Ventriloquist, Darren Carr. S1 Ep 469#469 Are You Sure That's a Job?

E

I’m gonna be honest, sometimes I feel like my ‘job’ isn’t really a job (as such). Intellectually, I know it is but emotionally and experientially, there’s just no sense of ‘work’ for me. Which makes me feel mostly happily, but occasionally guilty. In this episode, Melissa and I chat about the never-ending evolution of modern careers; jobs that literally didn’t exist not too long ago. Like Podcaster. Personal Trainer. Virtual (online) Corporate Speaker. Social Media Influencer. Life Coach. Web designer. YouTube Celebrity. We also talk about our ability to be able to adapt (as a group and as individuals) when we have to (finding a way). We chat about being resourceful, creative and finding the good in the bad. S1 Ep 465#465 The Hardest Job

E

There are some tough jobs but I can’t think of one that would take more of a mental, emotional and physical toll than that of crash scene investigator and reconstruction expert with Victoria Police’s Major Collision Investigation Group. Neither can I imagine what it would be like to attend more than 2,000 fatalities (including the deaths of 20 fellow police officers) and then in the middle of that devastation, overwhelm and trauma, to find a way to be calm, analytical and efficient. To establish what happened and why. To think clearly in the middle of the chaos and ‘do your job’. Well, former Detective Peter Bellion is that person and as you might imagine, it hasn’t been without its personal consequences. This was an eye-opener for me. S1 Ep 464#464 The Solution Person

E

Wendy Jenkins is a solution person. She has to be. In her mid-twenties, she was told she would be dead in two years, without a double-lung transplant. She was also told that new lungs might give her another five years (or so). Well, that was fourteen years and one transplant ago and despite living with sixty-two percent lung capacity, a shortened life-expectancy, perpetual shortness of breath, multiple issues with anxiety, depression, PTSD and a host of other medical challenges, Wendy is still laughing, learning and living and these days, she works with individuals, teams and organisations, helping them to help themselves. Aimee Stanton wasn’t a fan of school. She got suspended a few times. Or more. And expelled. One of her teachers predicted a career as a stripper and prostitute. Not one or the other, both. Well, that didn’t happen (of course) but she did become a plumber, a tiny house builder, an entrepreneur, a D.I.Y lady on the telly, an influencer (it’s a thing), a competitor on Australian Survivor, runner up on ‘House Rules’ and a passionate advocate for girls and women getting into the trades. S1 Ep 461#461 Who Inspires Me?

E

Dinesh Palipana (OAM) is an Australian Doctor working in the Gold Coast University Hospital Emergency Department. He’s also a Lawyer, Disability Advocate, University Lecturer and is the first person with a spinal cord injury to graduate as a Doctor in Australia. He is the 2021 Queensland, Australian of the Year, is an advocate for medical students with disabilities and is heavily involved in research to help people like him walk again. This episode is the audio from a talk Dinesh recently gave to an audience in one of my programs. It is relatively laid-back and more of a thinking-out-loud (type) conversation than it is any kind of ‘presentation’. I loved it and so did the group. In my work, I get to meet lots of intelligent, gifted, dynamic and successful people (and I’m super grateful) but I rarely meet people who are as special and inspirational as this man. He literally makes me want to be a better person. [email protected] omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 460#460 BrainPark

E

When I first heard the name ‘BrainPark’ (a few years ago), I visualised a kind-of Disneyland for Geeks and Brainiacs. In some ways, I was kind-of right. But more accurately, BrainPark is a world-first neuroscience research clinic (part of Monash University) dedicated to improving the physical, mental and brain health of Australians. It’s also where I’m doing my PhD. Now you understand the feeling of fraudulence. For this episode, I sat down with Dr. Rebecca Segrave (Deputy Director of BrainPark) and Professor Murat Yucel, who is a world-renowned Academic, Neuroscience Nerd, Director of BrainPark and sadly for him, senior supervisor for my PhD. S1 Ep 459#459 Becoming an Older Student

E

Study. So many people are scared of it but for me, it’s been liberating, transformative and empowering. It’s also awesome for your brain. And, to be honest, the ‘idea’ of it is scarier than the practical reality of it, once you’re under way. Nearly two decades after I finished school, I began my first degree (a Bachelor of Exercise Science) at the age of thirty-six. I was terrified and felt like a fraud. Over time, I figured it out. Two decades later (at fifty-six), I started my PhD and once again, those feelings returned. And once again, I’m figuring it out. This episode is all about returning to study at any level (certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, degree or post grad.) irrespective of your academic background, perceived aptitude for study or level of confidence (it will grow). S1 Ep 456#456 F**k the Prognosis

E

Carol Cooke is a Canadian-born Australian cyclist, swimmer and rower. She was part of the Canadian national swimming team, hoping to be selected for the 1980 Moscow Olympics before her country boycotted the games. She moved to Australia in 1994, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and basically told her life was over, she’d soon be in a wheelchair and to “get her affairs in order” (she was literally told this). She decided to choose her own path and destiny, took up rowing and narrowly missed out on being part of the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. She then switched to cycling, where she won a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics and two gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics. S1 Ep 452#452 Funny for Money

Simone Springer is funny for money. Her job is making people laugh. I love comedy but the idea of walking on stage for the sole purpose of making a room full of strangers laugh (strangers who give zero f**ks if I crash and burn), terrifies me. If I was braver, I would have given it a go. I’m not. And I didn’t. But Simone is. And she did. This was meant to be a conversation about something else. I planned an episode called ‘In Pursuit of Less’, exploring the things that, over the years I needed to let go of, stop doing or do less of. Well, that didn’t happen. Instead, this did. Our typical five-minute pre-show ramble became a fifty-minute deep dive down a psychological rabbit hole, exploring placebos, self-healing, Tiff’s new happiness light, the therapeutic benefits of laughter and being childish (that’s my excuse – it’s therapeutic), getting offended, being weird and lots more. He turned up at TYP Central (the studio) with some weird flu-preventing concoction which tasted like paint stripper (I imagine) and should keep my Vitamin C levels through the roof till December. Twelve and a half years-old, a cask of port, passed out on railway tracks behind his school (the one he rarely attended), abusing his teachers, hospitalised, stomach pumped; it was the best and worst day of his life. The worst, because it opened a door that became virtually impossible to shut and the best, because he discovered the ‘cure’ to his mental and emotional pain; the magic that took him (temporarily) out of suffering and into bliss. This is another fascinating chat about all-things addiction, prison, survival, recovery and hope with TYP favourite, Mick Hall.dayhab.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 443#443 Gut Health, Microbiome, Bacteria & ... Poo

E

Sure, I could have said ‘faecal matter’ but why would I when this episode is probably the only chance I’ll ever have to legitimately use ‘poo’ in a title; especially when I’m chatting with one of the world’s foremost authorities in the area of all-things gut health. Dr. Mahmoud Ghannoum is a tenured Professor and Director of the Centre for Medical Mycology at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Medical Centre. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles in the field of biofilms, the microbiome, microbial pathogenesis and preclinical in vitro and in vivo evaluations of antimicrobials. He also published the first study describing the oral mycobiome of healthy individuals, and the interaction between bacteria and fungi in the microbiomes of Crohn's patients. His work has been cited over 26,000 times in the medical literature. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 442#442 Making Your Mind a Nicer Place to... BE

E

Let’s be honest, sometimes our mind is a cerebral war zone. A cognitive catastrophe. A sh*t-fest of toxic thoughts, ideas, self-doubt, self-loathing, self-limiting stories and paranoia. As I’ve said before, we ‘do life’ in a physical, three-dimensional, external, see-touch-feel-hear world, but where we do most of our ‘living’ is in that non-physical, internal, unseen place that we call our mind (thoughts, stories, beliefs, ideas, dreams, values, goals, expectations, judgements, biases). This is a conversation about creating a healthier ‘place to live’.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 441#441 The Quantum Activist

E

If you’re interested in a conversational smorgasbord of science, spirituality, consciousness, identity, awareness, quantum physics and mysticism, then you’re in for a treat. But you may need a coffee first. No, really (lol). Sometimes I find myself in a conversation that I’m too stupid to be in. This was one of those times. Nonetheless, I did my best to seem like I knew what was going on. Despite my ineptitude, Dr. Goswami is brilliant and fascinating and I was totally enthralled. There were moments when I struggled (a little) with his accent (you might not) but if you can hang in there, it’s very worthwhile. Here’s a smidge of his bio… *Theoretical Quantum Physicist, Dr. Amit Goswami is a revolutionary amongst a growing body of renegade scientists who, in recent years, has ventured into the domain of the spiritual in an attempt both to interpret the seemingly inexplicable findings of curious experiments and to validate intuitions about the existence of a spiritual dimension of life. A prolific writer, teacher, and visionary, Dr. Goswami has appeared in the movies What the Bleep do we know!?, Dalai Lama Renaissance, as well as the award winning documentary, The Quantum Activist. Amit is the author of numerous books, most notably: The Self-Aware Universe, Physics of the Soul, The Quantum Doctor, God is Not Dead, Quantum Creativity, and The Everything Answer Book. He is also a retired professor of physics from the University of Oregon, where he served on the faculty for almost thirty years.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 440#440 Minimalism, Stoicism and Getting Punched in the Face (Part 2)

E

A few weeks ago, I sat down with Tommy and Josh on the 1000th episode of The Daily Talk Show. To celebrate, they decided to do a live, non-stop 1,000-minute episode with a cast of thousands (okay, tens) from way-too-early-in-the-morning to stupid-o’clock. Our chat started off over-lapping with the previous guest, Matt D’Avella (Netflix film maker who made ‘Minimalism’), and the boys and I covered everything from minimalism (there’s a shock), anxiety, confidence, food issues, the idea of needing to ‘hit rock bottom’ (to change), stoicism and indecision… and we even chatted about lessons learned through my less than impressive bouncing career (definitely wasn’t a career). S1 Ep 438#438 Health, Happiness and Hormones

E

Mum of two, Exercise Physiologist and Educator Unna Goldsworthy is back and I’m gonna be honest.. the blokes don’t get much of a run in this episode; which is just fine because we get more than enough attention. Once again, Unna continues the conversation around health, happiness and hormones and as always, I try not to get in the way. [email protected] omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
