S1 Ep 458#458 The Mind Architect (Peter Crone)

E

I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know who Peter Crone was before this interview was booked and while that was my loss, this chat was definitely my gain. Smart, insightful, intuitive and so gifted at exploring and explaining the human condition. I’m privileged to do what I do and meet the people I do on TYP and for me, this was just another great day at the office. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 457#457 Steve Willis (The Commando)

E

Not gonna lie, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into a conversation with ‘The Commando’. Interestingly, it didn’t happen. I ended up chatting with Steve Willis, the deep-thinking, interesting, somewhat-introverted ex-soldier, who happened to be on the telly for a decade or so. I really enjoyed our conversation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 456#456 F**k the Prognosis

E

Carol Cooke is a Canadian-born Australian cyclist, swimmer and rower. She was part of the Canadian national swimming team, hoping to be selected for the 1980 Moscow Olympics before her country boycotted the games. She moved to Australia in 1994, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and basically told her life was over, she’d soon be in a wheelchair and to “get her affairs in order” (she was literally told this). She decided to choose her own path and destiny, took up rowing and narrowly missed out on being part of the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. She then switched to cycling, where she won a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics and two gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics. This is one of those perspective-providing chats with a solution-focused, zero self-pity, let’s control our controllables and get-shit-done (type) people. Love her. S1 Ep 455#455 In Pursuit Of Less (Part 2)

E

Sometimes less is where the magic and the breakthroughs happen. Less pointless conversations. Less obsessing. Self-loathing. Over-thinking. Comparison. Wasting energy. Avoiding. Seeking approval. For me, it’s been about recognising the patterns, habits, behaviours, attitudes, rituals and idiosyncrasies that don’t serve me, empower me or benefit me. Things I needed to stop doing completely or do less of. This is a conversation about that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 454#454 Functional Medicine, Genetics, Nutrition & Research (Part 2)

E

This is one of my favourite chats this year. No, really. Dr. Denise Furness is one of those rare people who can comfortably combine her considerable intellect, knowledge, research background and academic credibility with outstanding social skills, relatability, story-telling and humour. She is an award-winning medical researcher, international speaker and author. She is a CSIRO trained Molecular Geneticist, who considers herself a Holistic Geneticist. She has been working in the field of nutritional genomics and personalised health for almost twenty years. In 2012 she founded ‘Your Genes & Nutrition’ and began working with integrative G.Ps and exploring functional medicine. She now works with a range of patients helping them identify underlying triggers and root causes of their health concerns. Using a combined approach of genetics, biochemical markers, nutrition and lifestyle medicine (functional medicine), she helps people take charge of their health and wellbeing. S1 Ep 452#452 Funny for Money

E

Simone Springer is funny for money. Her job is making people laugh. I love comedy but the idea of walking on stage for the sole purpose of making a room full of strangers laugh (strangers who give zero f**ks if I crash and burn), terrifies me. If I was braver, I would have given it a go. I’m not. And I didn’t. But Simone is. And she did. This was an interesting chat about her comedy journey, from the grassroots (open mic nights) right up to TV. We also discuss her lengthy battle with crippling anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD and how she came out the other side. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 450#450 The Accidental Episode

E

This was meant to be a conversation about something else. I planned an episode called ‘In Pursuit of Less’, exploring the things that, over the years I needed to let go of, stop doing or do less of. Well, that didn’t happen. Instead, this did. Our typical five-minute pre-show ramble became a fifty-minute deep dive down a psychological rabbit hole, exploring placebos, self-healing, Tiff’s new happiness light, the therapeutic benefits of laughter and being childish (that’s my excuse – it’s therapeutic), getting offended, being weird and lots more. This is one of my favourite freestyle chats.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 449#449 Building a High-Performance Culture

E

Okay, this was one of those surprise conversations and although I didn’t have any specific expectations going in, I certainly didn’t anticipate the deep-thinking, philosophical, emotionally evolved, insightful bloke who happens to be the only full-time professional male head coach of a netball team in the world. Dan Ryan coaches the Leeds Rhinos Netball Team in the UK Netball Superleague (and until last week, the Irish National Team). His understanding of leadership, mentoring, human development, teamwork, strategy, problem solving, extracting potential and thriving under pressure is exceptional. I’ve worked with plenty of elite coaches and Dan is brilliant. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 448#448 Improvement Not Perfection

E

Heidi Anderson is a natural performer and I loved her energy in this ep. of TYP. Along the way, we spoke about being on Big Brother, working in commercial radio, traversing the globe like a wild-child, dealing with rejection, killing her liver with booze, battling anxiety, drowning out the voices (with more booze), creating a mental health plan and support team and of course, having a few laughs. E

Apart from being an ex-Soldier, Policeman, MAFS Participant (is that the right term?), cafe owner and partner of TYP fave Bianca Chatfield, Mark Scrivens is just a good bloke, who’s great to talk with. He turned up at TYP Central (the studio) with some weird flu-preventing concoction which tasted like paint stripper (I imagine) and should keep my Vitamin C levels through the roof till December. Thanks Bianca. This episode genuinely felt more like a café catch up with a Mate, than it did any kind of public interview. S1 Ep 446#446 Winning in Sport and Life

E

Lisa Alexander has been one of the most winning Coaches in professional sport in Australia over the last twenty years; coaching the Australian Diamonds Netball Team for ten of those years (102 tests, 83 wins). We’ve been friends since we worked together at the Melbourne Phoenix (in the national netball league) from 2002 to 2004, where she was Senior Coach. As always, we cover lots of territory in this episode, talking about coaching the best team in the world in front of 17,000 people, life after coaching in the national spotlight, stepping out of the mayhem, finding new purpose, direction and identity, the cross-over between high performance in sport and life and lots more. S1 Ep 445#445 The Mind of an Addict (Part 2)

E

“I was an addict waiting to happen” - Mick Hall. Twelve and a half years-old, a cask of port, passed out on railway tracks behind his school (the one he rarely attended), abusing his teachers, hospitalised, stomach pumped; it was the best and worst day of his life. The worst, because it opened a door that became virtually impossible to shut and the best, because he discovered the ‘cure’ to his mental and emotional pain; the magic that took him (temporarily) out of suffering and into bliss. S1 Ep 443#443 Gut Health, Microbiome, Bacteria & ... Poo

E

Sure, I could have said ‘faecal matter’ but why would I when this episode is probably the only chance I’ll ever have to legitimately use ‘poo’ in a title; especially when I’m chatting with one of the world’s foremost authorities in the area of all-things gut health. Dr. Mahmoud Ghannoum is a tenured Professor and Director of the Centre for Medical Mycology at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Medical Centre. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles in the field of biofilms, the microbiome, microbial pathogenesis and preclinical in vitro and in vivo evaluations of antimicrobials. He also published the first study describing the oral mycobiome of healthy individuals, and the interaction between bacteria and fungi in the microbiomes of Crohn's patients. S1 Ep 442#442 Making Your Mind a Nicer Place to... BE

E

Let’s be honest, sometimes our mind is a cerebral war zone. A cognitive catastrophe. A sh*t-fest of toxic thoughts, ideas, self-doubt, self-loathing, self-limiting stories and paranoia. As I’ve said before, we ‘do life’ in a physical, three-dimensional, external, see-touch-feel-hear world, but where we do most of our ‘living’ is in that non-physical, internal, unseen place that we call our mind (thoughts, stories, beliefs, ideas, dreams, values, goals, expectations, judgements, biases). This is a conversation about creating a healthier ‘place to live’.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 441#441 The Quantum Activist

E

If you’re interested in a conversational smorgasbord of science, spirituality, consciousness, identity, awareness, quantum physics and mysticism, then you’re in for a treat. But you may need a coffee first. No, really (lol). Sometimes I find myself in a conversation that I’m too stupid to be in. This was one of those times. Nonetheless, I did my best to seem like I knew what was going on. Despite my ineptitude, Dr. Goswami is brilliant and fascinating and I was totally enthralled. There were moments when I struggled (a little) with his accent (you might not) but if you can hang in there, it’s very worthwhile. Here’s a smidge of his bio… *Theoretical Quantum Physicist, Dr. Amit Goswami is a revolutionary amongst a growing body of renegade scientists who, in recent years, has ventured into the domain of the spiritual in an attempt both to interpret the seemingly inexplicable findings of curious experiments and to validate intuitions about the existence of a spiritual dimension of life. A prolific writer, teacher, and visionary, Dr. Goswami has appeared in the movies What the Bleep do we know!?, Dalai Lama Renaissance, as well as the award winning documentary, The Quantum Activist. Amit is the author of numerous books, most notably: The Self-Aware Universe, Physics of the Soul, The Quantum Doctor, God is Not Dead, Quantum Creativity, and The Everything Answer Book. He is also a retired professor of physics from the University of Oregon, where he served on the faculty for almost thirty years.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 440#440 Minimalism, Stoicism and Getting Punched in the Face (Part 2)

E

A few weeks ago, I sat down with Tommy and Josh on the 1000th episode of The Daily Talk Show. To celebrate, they decided to do a live, non-stop 1,000-minute episode with a cast of thousands (okay, tens) from way-too-early-in-the-morning to stupid-o’clock. Our chat started off over-lapping with the previous guest, Matt D’Avella (Netflix film maker who made ‘Minimalism’), and the boys and I covered everything from minimalism (there’s a shock), anxiety, confidence, food issues, the idea of needing to ‘hit rock bottom’ (to change), stoicism and indecision… and we even chatted about lessons learned through my less than impressive bouncing career (definitely wasn’t a career). Dr. Paul Liknaitzky and I both work (okay, I study) in the same building at Monash University and are both part of the School of Psychological Sciences but that’s where the similarities end. Unlike me, Paul is an actual academic doing ground-breaking research, while I’m fumbling my way through my second year of PhD student life (thanks to the awesome team at @brainparkmonash). Paul is head of the Psychedelic Research Group at Monash, Chief Principal Investigator, Research Fellow and has Adjunct or Honorary appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital, Macquarie University, Deakin University, and the University of Melbourne. He’s also Principal Investigator across a number of Australia’s first clinical psychedelic trials. Paul is currently establishing a rigorous program of research in psychedelic medicine at Monash that seeks to evaluate therapeutic effects, innovate on treatment design, mitigate known risks, explore potential drawbacks and understand therapeutic mechanisms. This was a fascinating episode, he’s a fascinating bloke and I loved our chat. Enjoy. *FYI.. These days, her primary focus is around functional medicine, regenerative medicine, integrative medicine and of course, longevity. During this chat, we cover plenty of territory, including fat-loss, sleep, building muscle (after 50) and big picture thinking (when it comes to health) but perhaps the area some of you will find most interesting, is her thoughts on hormones and peptides (not what you might think) and why many of her female patients are prescribed testosterone and seeing amazing results.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 431#431 When to Ditch the Plan

E

In the world of Personal Development, we’re always banging on about being strategic, committing to the process and having a plan. And of course, planning is good.. right up to the point where it isn’t. Like when it isn’t working. So, when do we adapt the plan, modify the plan or maybe even, ditch the plan altogether? What about being intuitive? Flexible? What about paying attention and being spontaneous, creative and adaptable as we go, depending on data, results and feedback? Maybe we need an over-arching goal and focus (to change our body, break a habit or start a business, for example) but maybe our plan needs to be more flexible, fluid and organic and less rigid and non-negotiable?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if your best years are yet to come? What if your peak hasn’t come and gone? What if you can be more successful, fulfilled and empowered in the second half of your life? What if thinking (about age) is more of a limitation, than age itself? What if you could be physically, mentally and emotionally ‘better’ in your fifties, sixties and seventies (you can, by the way)? What if you started a new business or career post-fifty? What if you went back to study thirty years after you finished? I love it when I chat with people who could quite rightly think they’re a big deal, but absolutely don’t. Marc is that guy. In this episode of TYP, he shares his thoughts on everything from business, entrepreneurship, lawn-mowing rounds and technology (of course), to creativity, courage, potential, helping others, how he prioritises his family, why he only works two days a week and how to consciously create a life which reflects our values and purpose.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Flying fish (really). Huge waves and swells. Dehydrated meals. Making fresh water using a desalinator. Extreme heat (she was near the equator). Ever-present pain from rowing all day, every day. E

In 2017, Marie Nilsson fell off a mountain. Literally. She was 500 metres from the summit of the highest mountain in Poland (Mount Rysy) when she slipped and fell 450 metres, hitting rocks and shattering her body along the way. By some miracle, she survived the fall but was perilously close to death, when medical help arrived. Multiple skull fractures. A broken neck (C3). An internal brain bleed. External brain bleed (inside the skull, external to the brain). Facial paralysis. 15 broken ribs. Shattered collarbone. Multiple organ failure (liver, kidney and lungs). Loss of hearing (left ear permanent). Loss of taste. Damaged intestines. Broken foot. Dislocated jaw. Significant nerve damage. And of course, brain damage. 7 weeks in ICU, 5 weeks in a coma, ongoing rehabilitation and recovery and now, 4 years later, we chat. Interestingly, before her accident, Marie worked as an Exercise Therapist, specialising in rehabilitation. She is a special woman with a remarkable understanding of physical, mental and emotional healing. *Note: Marie, experiences slight cognitive delay due to her brain injury and still struggles with physical and mental energy, so compared to some TYP conversations, this one is a little more leisurely. S1 Ep 424#424 What is Fitness? (It's Not What You Think) Part 2

E

For this two-part chat, I slip into Exercise Science mode and resident TYP Exercise Physiologist Russ Jarrett and I talk about the multi-dimensional nature of Fitness. Apparently, there’s more to it than running around the block. Being ‘fit’ is not a single thing but rather, many things. Fit for what?.. is the smart question. Fit to shovel dirt? Run a race? Live pain free? Move furniture? Complete a triathlon? Play tennis? Lift heavy things? Play with the grandkids? Do push-ups? Compete in elite sport? Do the splits? Dance all night? Fitness is about an individual’s ability to be able to meet the physical requirements of specific sports, tasks, skills, roles and activities. This is an interesting (and valuable) conversation. S1 Ep 422#422 Becoming Ungiveupable

E

So much talk about change. So little actual change. So much starting and stopping. Over and over. So many excuses dressed up as reasons. So much talk. So many intentions. So many goals. So many pointless resolutions. So many words. So much temporary change. So little permanent change. So many broken promises. Yep, some people have been ‘almost’ changing their lives for decades but how do we actually get it done? As in, forever? Why do we keep looking for an external solution, when we really need an internal revolution? Why are we so addicted to instant gratification, magic pills and shortcuts? And finally, how do we persevere through the fear, the discomfort, the motivational troughs and the uncertainty? This a broadly relevant conversation and it’s fair to say that, in parts, it’s somewhat direct. Shocking, I know. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Along the way, we chat about Aaron’s thoughts around aging well, the joy and value of competition, injury prevention and recovery, the role of doctors, training past fifty, reactive vs. proactive health management, why (some) people are sceptical of Chiros and my neck-cracking experience. S1 Ep 417#417 Jacqui Louder (Part 2)

E

Jacqui Louder is one of Australia’s most respected Sport Psychologists, a former radio colleague of mine and a good Mate. This was a fun conversation with an expert who pulls no punches, drops F bombs and has a gift for explaining human behaviour in a user-friendly manner. Jacqui currently works with the Collingwood Netball Team in the National League, Collingwood Football Club (men and women’s teams), Melbourne Storm in the NRL and a bunch of Olympians. This chat went forever, so we’ve broken into two parts. Enjoy.LinkedIn - Jacqui LouderSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 415#415 Freestyling with Melissa

E

This episode is what happens when it’s Saturday arvo and the guest for our Sunday episode pulls the pin an hour earlier. It probably won’t change your life, solve your problems or inspire you to greatness, but I always enjoy having a casual on-air chat with the poster girl for introverts; Melissa. Among other things, we speak about our individual eating issues (there are plenty), Melissa (who hates coffee) deciding to drink.. coffee (daily), aggro people on social media, wasting time and energy on crap that doesn’t matter, Melissa’s full moon issues, me unintentionally terrifying a stranger this morning (for real), a few TYP updates and lots more. S1 Ep 414#414 The Worst Pharmacist Ever

E

Imagine a Pharmacist who actively discourages people away from the chemical highway and towards a path of something far less synthetic and pill-shaped. A Bloke who spent years learning and training, only to discover that the ‘job’ didn’t resonate with his heart, connect with his soul or align with his inner guidance system. Well, Niraj Naik is that bloke. From pills, powders and prescriptions, to meditation, retreats, breath work, natural healing and music therapy, it’s been quite the journey. Niraj does this crazy demonstration mid conversation and while sitting totally still, he self-regulated his heart rate from about 65 up to 120 and then down to 55, all in about forty seconds (with a finger pulse oximeter on, that I could see). Amazing. Enjoy.somabreath.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 413#413 Retro Gyms, Pelvic Floors and Aquatic Tinder

Lisa Westlake is something on an icon of Australian Fitness and Health. And a friend of mine. As both a highly-regarded Physiotherapist and a nationally recognised Fitness Professional, Lisa has been working at the coal face of health, healing, function and fitness for more than three decades, empowering Aussies to live their best lives, through optimal health. This was a fun chat with a nice mix of info, inspo and silliness. Enjoy. Yes, I wrote inspo.physicalbest.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 412#412 The Breathing Cure

E

This is my surprise episode of the year (so far). To be honest, I was wondering how I might fill an hour talking to a bloke about breathing but in the end, we literally ran out of time and I was totally fascinated with what Patrick McKeown had to say. So, we’re all pretty good at breathing. Most of us have been doing it for quite a while but who knew that the ‘way’ we breathe (you mean there’s a better and worse technique?) can impact everything from athletic performance, recovery, sleep quality and energy levels to anxiety, depression, attention, concentration and more broadly, emotional and cognitive function. This episode gets better and better the further it goes but I will warn you that it’s a little ‘sciencey’ in parts. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 411#411 You and Your Potential

E

A few years ago, I turned some of my words into a video. Well, Tommy Jackett did. Anyway, those words seemed to resonate with quite a few people and that video went (kind-of) viral, with almost a million views through (mainly) Facebook. Today’s mini-podcast is the audio from that video (with a backing track) and I don’t often say that I like my own work but, after hearing it today for the first time in a few years (and forgetting most of what I wrote), I enjoyed it and weirdly, got a little inspired. If you know someone who needs some inspiration, please share it with them. Thanks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 410#410 Angry White Pyjamas

E

The inspiration behind the title will become apparent during the conversation. Apart from being one of my Mates, Francis is also one of Australia’s most respected journalists, working in all mediums (TV, Radio, Newspapers, Online) and inhabiting spaces as diverse a politics, music, sport and industry. In this interesting chat, Francis and I talk about everything from echo chambers, keyboard warriors, meaningful conversation with people we don’t agree with and song-writing, to open-mindedness (is it possible?), how our thinking changes as we age and of course…. the pyjama story.@saintfranklySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 409#409 Talking vs. Communicating

E

To be honest, this was something of a conversational smorgasbord that neither Melissa or I were really in control of. We finally got around to the intended topic (communication) but beforehand, we covered a lot of weird territory, including Melissa’s girl-crush on Oprah, me being dragged to a Tony Robbins gig, Eckhart Tolle doing my head in at a live event and the science of writing a self-help book for people who don’t like self-help.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
