S1 Ep 1658#1658 What They Should Teach You At School, But Don't - Harps (PT1)

A brief collection of powerful lessons and insights that, in an alternate academic universe, might be scheduled between fractions, geography and computer science (whatever that is). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1657#1657 Should We Trust First Impressions? - David Gillespie

The bloke who hates (the field of) Psychology but (curiously) keeps talking about human behaviour is back, and this time Gillespo and I chat about the science of first impressions, the dangers of making hasty decisions, who we should trust and how slowly, psychopath-proofing our decisions, when snap judgements are okay, how psychopaths are (surprisingly) good at understanding how others think and feel (they just don't care), and lots more. S1 Ep 1656#1656 The Boss Lady - Nicole Livingstone (OAM)

Nicole Livingstone (OAM) is a three-time Olympian, multiple Olympic medallist, former world champion, former CEO of the AFLW, sports broadcaster, media commentator, mum of three, wife of one, renowned sports administrator and recently-appointed CEO of the Victorian Institute of Sport. She's a boss both literally, and metaphorically and as always, it was fun to catch up with an old friend. Pun intended. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1655#1655 Reconnecting With Your Body - Dr. Bill Sullivan

The human body is smart, incredibly adaptable and resilient, but it's not indestructible. And while it's always chatting with us (the human in the body) and doing its best to guide, inform and warn, sadly, we seem to be listening less and less, and drowning out the biological wisdom with a curious range of numbing agents and avoidance strategies; pain killers, anti-inflammatories, booze, junk food, recreational drugs and an ever-increasing choice of dopamine-providing distractions. *Bill Sullivan, Ph.D., is the author of one of my favourite books; 'Pleased to Meet Me: Genes, Germs, and the Curious Forces That Make Us Who We Are'. S1 Ep 1654#1654 Future-Proofing You - Harps

What decisions do you need to make, what action do you need to take, what habits do you need to change, what problems do you need to solve and what strategies and provisions do you need to put in place now(ish), to improve the likelihood of ‘future you' (personal, professional, physical, financial, social and psychological you) being an optimised, healthy, happy version of you?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1653#1653 Neurosurgery: A Day In The Life - Dr. Alex Koefman

Dr. Alex Koefman is back, and f**k, this is a fascinating conversation. If you're interested in taking a peek behind the neurosurgery curtain and gaining incredible insight into the myriad variables, factors, skills, and considerations that go into Alex's job (some things you wouldn't think about), take a listen. S1 Ep 1652#1652 Increase Your Health-Span - Harps

Some people live for a (relatively) long time but they don't live in a healthy, functional state for a long time. They have a long life-span but not a long health-span. Sure they might live for eighty years (for example) but for some, the last twenty years (25% of their life) will be savaged by medical issues, pain, immobility, sarcopenia (muscle wasting), loss of strength, balance and coordination, cognitive decline and understandably, depression and anxiety. We now know that health span (the percentage of our life lived in a healthy state) is largely determined (70-80%) by our lifestyle, exercise, daily habits, diet and in general terms, our choices and behaviours. This is a conversation about that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1651#1651 Patrick Throws Me Under The Bus - Patrick Bonello

Allegedly, I may have given Patrick a hard time on the show. In the past. On occasion. Allegedly. Your Honour. Consequently, today was a shot at retribution for him and he took it. And if I'm being honest and self-aware - as I try to be (but often in vain) - I probably deserved some of it. Okay, most. As always, this was a fun episode masquerading as conversation about tech, but when I tell you that Patrick's first 'tech topic' was about a company using Al to convert black and white vintage porn (from 1896. I mean really vintage!) into colour, you'll realise how low the tech bar was set. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1650#1650 My Mate Coggers - Gorgi Coghlan

Hi Team, I’m tied up today, so we’re going to revisit a fun chat I had with the amazing Gorgi Coghlan. *Gorgi Coghlan is a ripper. Real, vulnerable, philosophical, smart, driven, compassionate, perfectionistic (self-admitted) and great to talk with. She has worked as a successful TV Host, Presenter, Journalist, Reporter, Singer and before all the famous stuff, she was a passionate and dedicated school teacher. I love it when people I’ve watched on the telly for years turn out to be ace in real life. So, Coggers (as I now call her) and I spoke about her anxiety journey, her philosophy on maintaining a healthy marriage, the Untethered Soul (her fave book), seeking external validation, attaching to thoughts, interviewing famous people from around the world, recovering from perfectionism, hanging out with Will Ferrell, life on her farm, responding vs. reacting, the science of self-regulation and lots more. S1 Ep 1649#1649 F**k Balance - Russ & Tara Jarrett

F**K BALANCE Admittedly, it doesn't sound like great advice (and over the long term, it isn't) but it's been my experience (in my own business and academic endeavours) and my observation (working with others) that sometimes success, high-performance and creating something amazing and exceptional requires a period of time immersed in the middle of something resembling obsession, hyperfocus, and imbalance. With an occasional smattering of exhaustion. Like I said, I wouldn't recommend it as a general practice but it seems to be a common denominator among high performers. This is a conversation about that and other interesting things. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1648#1648 When Failure Isn't Failure - Harps

For the most part, failure is a subjective interpretation of an objective outcome. For example... you run 10km in fifty-two minutes and interpret it as a failure because your goal was to run sub fifty minutes and you didn't. Your story is "I failed" and accordingly you ‘feel' like a failure. Your feeling is real and as a result, your literal experience is disappointment, sadness, frustration and maybe even, anger. Conversely, I run the exact same time (52 minutes) and I feel like an absolute rockstar because it's my best ever time. And while I'm feeling great, you're feeling rubbish, despite our identical result. We each have different stories and subsequently, we each have a different emotional, psychological and experiential outcome. Me, positive. You, negative. Same time, different thinking. Same time, different story. Same time, different self-created experiences. Failure. Winner. When it gets super interesting is when I tell you about the girl who also ran fifty-two minutes while aiming for sub fifty, but didn't feel like a failure because she learned a lot through the experience, and subsequently saw the outcome as a valuable lesson, which would serve her well in future events.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1647#1647 Building Rapport - Harps & Tiff

How do we create connection, rapport and trust with an audience; be it an audience of one or a thousand? And for the guy who talks to humans for a living (me), it won't surprise you to know that this question is never far from my mind. Be it a corporate group, a sporting team, a bunch of students, a flock of academics (not sure about the collective noun for academics) or a bloke called Kevin sitting a metre away, my primary objective is to understand the person or persons in front of me, in order to create a meaningful interpersonal experience. S1 Ep 1646#1646 A Brief Coaching Session - Harps

This episode is exactly what the title says. S1 Ep 1645#1645 People-Pleasing Is F***ing Exhausting - Harps

People-pleasing is a psychological and emotional disease of low self-esteem, insecurity, self-doubt, perceived inadequacy and unworthy-ness. And it's rampant. I encounter it every day and as much as it might surprise you, there was a period of my life when I was a world-class people-pleaser. Driven by a need for approval, social acceptance, popularity, security and group respect, I found myself complying, obliging and conforming out of fear, weakness and insecurity. This episode is a starting point for a bigger conversation, but I think you'll find some valuable stories, insights and strategies. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1644#1644 Me and Food - Harps

It's been a wild ride. Kind of like a tempestuous affair. A relationship of peaks and troughs. Love and hate. Secret eating. Body dysmorphia. Self-loathing. Obsessive behaviour. Guilt. Shame. Lies. Breakdowns, break-ups and thankfully, breakthroughs. In my quest for optimal health, high performance and (let's be real) looking good, food has been my biggest challenge. Specifically, my mindset, choices, habits, behaviours and rituals around food. If you and food also have (or had) an 'interesting' relationship, this episode might be of interest. S1 Ep 1643#1643 Intentional Living - Harps & Tiff

My definition of 'Intentional Living' is living on purpose, and in purpose. And for me, living 'on purpose’ means that I am conscious, intentional and strategic about the way I live. It means that my life is not an unintended, unplanned, unconscious or accidental journey, process or outcome. And for me, living 'in purpose' means that the way I live my life is a reflection of my values, morals, ethics, beliefs and goals. These key ideas are the stepping-off point for this conversation with Tiff. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1642#1642 Is Aussie Education Broken? - David Gillespie

According to David Gillespie, the Australian education system has never been in a worse state. And this is not some unsubstantiated claim; he walks us through the current reality of education in, not only Australia, but also around the world, and some of the data will fascinate you. We also talk about the charity he created to support and empower Aussie kids to better academic experiences and outcomes. It's called freeschool.org.au and as the name suggests, it's a totally free resource for Australian students, complete with 8,500 (plus) videos of Australian teachers, teaching current Australian curriculums. Oh, and he also tells us how to spot a Psychopathic School Principal (not even kidding). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1641#1641 Your Thinking Is Not My Thinking - Blake Eastman

"We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are" (Anias Nin). I love this chat about the human condition with Blake Eastman and I love him. Such a great down-to-earth science communicator, with a gift to de-jargon-ise (my new word) and distil, what can be complicated concepts and topics, into relatable and easy-to-understanding stories and language. Like me, he's a Pracademic (an a real Academic). **Blake Eastman is the founder of The Nonverbal Group, his life has been dedicated to the study of Psychology and Nonverbal Behaviour and he has built several companies fuelled by a passion to better understand human behaviour. Blake was an adjunct Psychology Professor at the City University of New York for six years where he taught General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Group Dynamics. S1 Ep 1640#1640 WTF Is Self-Transcendence - Harps

Yesterday I opened the door on the 'Understanding You' conversation off the back of my weekend Melbourne Workshop (of the same title) where I (not-surprisingly) failed to get through the totality of my intended content. This solo episode is a little workshop-y, so you might want to either (1) give it a miss or (2) get yourself a pen and paper (or something more technologically advanced!). S1 Ep 1639#1639 Understanding You - Harps (PT1)

Today (as I type this, Sunday Sept. 8) I facilitated a public workshop in good old Melbs (called 'Understanding You') and we had a great time, opening the door of consciousness, curiosity, self-awareness and personal transformation. As is often the way, the super-chatty only-child didn't quite make it through everything he wanted to cover (despite talking for more than three hours!), and as a result of my inability to be verbally efficient, I informed the group that I would share some of my remaining content here at TYP Central, as a kind-of 'finishing the conversation' (for them) and an 'opening of the door' for you; my regular listeners. This instalment is a brief-ish entree to the topic and tomorrow I’ll be back with the meat and potatoes. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1638#1638 Mixed Tapes, Rotary Phones & Video Players - Patrick Bonello

This was another fun chat with Patrick and Tiff, and this time we opened the door on some of our favourite 'old tech', which at the time was groundbreaking and mind-blowing, but looking back through the 2024 window, well.. not so much. As usual, there was an unnecessary amount of silly-ness, banter and bullsh*t, which for some strange reason, some of you seem to enjoy more than the (alleged) 'tech talk'.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1637#1637 What Are You Wasting Energy On - Carly Taylor

Carly Taylor is back chatting about the propensity we humans have to invest time, energy and attention into the things we can't undo, change or control, while simultaneously doing little or nothing to address and/or impact the things which are actually within our influence or control. Weird but also common. This is a very relevant and practical conversation that will resonate with many people. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1636#1636 Uses For Obsession - Ben Shewry

The title of this episode is the name of Ben Shewry's new book. It doesn't really represent the chat but I just loved the title because, over the years I've masterfully (and clumsily) turned my obsession (human behaviour) into a job, a business, a PhD Project, multiple books, a podcast and conveniently, a way to pay a few bills. If you don't know who Ben is, he is one of the most respected Chefs in the world and owner of the internationally renowned restaurant, Attica (it's been in the "World's 50 Best Restaurants' list for over a decade). Ben was my surprise interview of the last six months. I'm not sure what I expected going in to our conversation but coming out the other side, he was (is) an inspiration and revelation; deep-thinking, fiercely intelligent, creative, kind and as the title suggests, just a little obsessed. S1 Ep 1635#1635 The Happiness Guru - Andrew Mathews

Happiness, we all want it but how do we 'get' it? Or, do we just 'be' it? How much of 'being happy' is about our mind? Situation? Bank balance? Job? And what is its relationship with things like contentment, calm, joy and the absence of anxiety? Andrew Matthews is an Australian author and international speaker who has sold more than 8 million books in 48 languages, making him one of the world's foremost authorities on the topic of happiness. I really enjoyed connecting with Andrew, and I loved the fact that his manner and energy (both on and off the podcast) was completely consistent with what he teaches. That means a lot to me. Luke Reynolds is a Professional Strongman Athlete, Coach, Actor and Commentator and at 6'7" (over 2 metres), he's just 'trimmed down' to a diminutive 150kgs (from 173kg). Now before you think this episode ain't for you, think again. Many of you will find this conversation fascinating for a range of reasons; the training, psychology, preparation, injuries, competition, rituals and science of competing against the strongest people on the Planet, is not a simple (or painless) process. S1 Ep 1633#1633 The Freedom Fighter - Justin Wren

I’m tied up today, so I’ve decided to re-share one of my absolute favourite TYP chats. *Here’s the original synopsis.. In seven years of podcasting and twenty years of radio, this conversation is in my all-time top ten. Justin Wren is a both a cage fighter and freedom fighter, who has fought on the world-stage in the UFC and in the jungles of the Congo, championing the cause of one of the most marginalised groups of people in thew world; the Mbuti Pygmies. Justin's personal story (as an elite athlete battling all kinds of problems) and the story of his mission and purpose to liberate, empower and love the Mbuti, is both inspiring and confronting. S1 Ep 1632#1632 Stop F**cking Waiting - Harps

No matter when I talk to some people, today is never the 'change' day. It's always soon. Not now. Not today. Soon. The mystical, mythical, magical... soon. Sadly, some people have been waiting for the right time for years. They are the 'almost brigade'; almost making the necessary decision, almost taking action, almost doing the work, almost using their potential, almost creating positive change but actually, doing f**k all. And then one day they mysteriously ask "how did my life end up like this" and say something intriguing like "this wasn't my plan", when in fact, they had no plan. Don’t. Waste. Your. Potential. S1 Ep 1631#1631 Reprogramming You - Harps

Like it or not, want it or not, you've been programmed. By life. Family. Friends. School. Culture. Religion. Society. Media. Social media. Experiences. Interactions. Relationships. In many ways, you weren't taught how to think but rather, told what to think. If you're like most, then many of your beliefs were not consciously chosen (by you) but rather, unconsciously adopted. In other words, their beliefs became your beliefs and you had very little say or awareness in it, or of it. Without knowing or choosing, you became a version of them. And when you pushed back against the group think, you were quickly corrected, chastised and coerced back into conformity and compliance, because that was the price of 'membership'. And no, not all programming and conditioning is bad (of course) but now that we're grown-ups, the challenge for us is to find the place where our programming finishes, and we start. Unconscious. S1 Ep 1630#1630 Things You Should Stop Doing - Harps

Depending on where you're at on your personal growth journey, this episode will sit somewhere on the relevance scale between totally irrelevant (the bottom) through to 'do you have a f**king camera in my house' (top of the scale, pay attention, take notes, re-listen)? This list is a collection of some of the most common self-destructive, time-wasting, talent-wasting, toxic habits and behaviours that I've observed (in myself and others) over the years. S1 Ep 1629#1629 Addicted 10 Year-Olds - David Gillespie

Obviously it's no revelation to suggest that the combination of young kids and vast amounts of time spent on smart phones (and the like) is problematic but it might shock to you know just how bad it is for the developing brain, nervous system, emotional system and mental health of our future grown-ups. Interestingly, one of the UK's largest mobile network providers is now (to their own commercial detriment) advising parents not to buy smartphones for their primary school-aged children. S1 Ep 1628#1628 The Opposite of Anxiety - Dr. Lillian Nejad

When we dig down deep into people's goals (the 'why' behind their ‘what’), what they really want is generally something in the ballpark of emotional and psychological calm, contentment and peace. S1 Ep 1626#1626 Connecting With Your Body - Unna Goldsworthy

Our body is always speaking to us; trying to gain our attention so that we might give it more of what it needs, and less of what it doesn't. Yep, the human body is an amazing biofeedback system and it's constantly communicating some kind of wisdom. Sadly, sometimes we inhabitants (of that amazing biofeedback system), have our metaphoric fingers in our ears. S1 Ep 1625#1625 You'll Never Have Today Again - Harps

Sure, you've had lots of days 'like' this one but you've never had, and will never have, this particular day again. For me, that day (as I write) is Sunday, August 25, 2024. And while I've had thousands of Sundays, I've never had this one. This one is unique because, in the history of humanity, there will only ever be one August 25, 2024. And this is the one. This is my one. We commonly say that every day is a gift (and it is) but in the proximity and familiarity of so many days, gratitude (for a single day) and awareness (that every day is precious) are typically absent. If you could magically have a billion dollars right now but only 365 more 'todays'.. or you could live into old age with your potential and possibilities intact (but no additional money), l'm pretty sure what you'd choose.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1624#1624 What Is Social Awareness - Dr. Adam Mastroianni

Hi Everyone. I’m having a TYP breather today, so we’re re-visiting this chat I had a while back with Dr. Adam Mastroianni. He is a postdoctoral research scholar at Columbia Business School who studies how people perceive and misperceive their social worlds, from the person sitting across the table to the broader community buzzing around them. He writes a great blog called Experimental History, is a stand-up comic, a Harvard Graduate and I think even he'd admit that he's kind of a quirky academic-comedian-philosopher hybrid. S1 Ep 1622#1622 The Doctor Scared Me - Harps

Okay, so I might have been somewhat lazy and negligent when it comes to looking after my skin and having regular checks. I may have also just got off the phone with the Skin Doc who told me that I'm an idiot for waiting, avoiding and being irresponsible. The pathology just came back from two biopsies (forehead, elbow) and one surgery (chin) and let's just say none of it was great news (basal cell carcinomas) but it could have been worse. I'll be fine but it was heading towards… not fine. Two more surgeries next week and five more biopsies on remaining 'concerns' So, what's my long-winded point? You're gonna find this hard to believe but, some people don't like me, what I do or how I do it. Shocking, I know. I mean, l'm so fucking adorable, how can they not? Of course I jest, and of course, me and my stuff (podcasts, whiteboard messages, conversations, personality, language, humour) will land well with some, and not with others. Of course. The same exact message will confuse person A, inspire person B, inform person C, make person D laugh, and piss person E right off. This episode covered a lot of territory and for two people with commitment issues, Tiff and I sure opened a lot of doors. Vulnerability. Self-awareness. Abstinence. Self-control. Trust. Authentic friendships. Talk therapy. Marriage. Being alone versus being lonely. Whether I would have made a good dad. And lots more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1614#1614 The Power of Delaying Gratification - Harps

In our frantic, fast-paced world, where instant access to everything is just a click away, the idea of delaying gratification might seem outdated and even, counterintuitive. You and I live in a culture that celebrates the now; quick wins, fast food, magic pills, quick fixes, two-minute abs and instant results. The case for instant gratification is indeed a compelling one, if you pay attention to those care only about your money, and not about your well-being (brands and business trying to sell you shit). But the truth is, when it comes to building a better life and a better version of you in the middle of that life, the practice of exercising restraint, living consciously and delaying gratification is possibly the most important you can do.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1612#1612 Olympic Review (Kind Of) - David Gillespie

In the Olympic review that nobody needs, Gillespo and I chat about the Paris games, his underwhelming vehicle choice, his parenting model around technology in the home, the relationship between rising tech use, rising mental health issues and rising crime rates, New Zealand producing so many gold medals with such a small population (FYI, the population of California is 7.5 times that of NZ) and yes, the Aussies were spectacular too.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1611#1611 Performance Intelligence - Andrew May

Every so often, I share an interview that l've done on someone else's podcast because I feel the conversation is worth sharing directly with my listeners and obviously, today is such a day. l've known Andrew May (host of Performance Intelligence) for more than twenty years, so you won't be shocked when I tell you that this conversation is a somewhat 'loose' affair, with a liberal smattering of objectionable language, stories and opinions but fortunately, there is also a healthy serving of science, strategy, high-performance and insight. Enjoy.www.andrewmay.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1609#1609 What's Real & What's Not? - Patrick Bonello

Is it human art or Al art? And if it is Al art, is it actually art? Was it written by a human or a Bot? Is it inspired creativity or 'programmed' creativity? Did he do the assignment or did ChatGPT do it? Is it a real photo or an image generated to look like a photo? Is the 'information' I'm getting through Al actual (accurate, objective) information or is it a 'story' about something, designed to influence the thinking of the researcher/reader in a certain way? Is it a legitimate opportunity, or is it a well-crafted scam? Is this a real link, or is it a pathway to my financial ruin? For better or worse, reality is becoming harder and harder to discern.
