In Memory of Moyshe (Morris) Hollender
In memory of the late Mr. Moyshe (Morris) Hollender, who recently passed away. Hollender was a survivor of death camps in World War II. In his later years he served as Gabbai, Torah reader, and Ba'al Tefillah at Temple Beth Israel in Waltham, MA. For many years he was a treasured resource for collectors of old songs, poems, and melodies from Jewish life that might otherwise have been forgotten. He was a frequent contributor to the "Yiddish Voice" radio show. The program features several recordings of Hollender singing and recounting the past. Also with the participants of special guests Hankus Netsky, Dovid Mermelstein, and Marti Leibovits Friedman. Replay of the previous week's show (aired August 20, 2014), but slightly edited for length and with the addition of greetings by cohosts Hasia Segal and Iosif Lakhman on the occasion of the Yiddish Voice's 20th anniversary. Original air date: August 27, 2014 [Description from last week follows:] "The Yiddish Voice" Radio Show — Live from Yidish-Vokh! At the Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center, Reisterstown, MD, in the Theatre 9 PM, Saturday Night, August 16 2014 The Yiddish Voice, the Yiddish-language radio show heard in Boston and on the Internet, celebrated its 20th birthday by performing its first-ever recording in front of a live audience, namely, the attendees of the 2014 Yidish-Vokh at the Pearlstone Center in Reisterstown, MD, near Baltimore. This milestone recording was aired the following Wednesday at 7:30 PM on Boston radio airwaves via WUNR 1600 AM and around the world through the web site yiddishvoice.com . In addition, the show has now been released simultaneously as its first-ever podcast edition, able to be heard on computers, smart phones, tablets and other devices at a time of any listener's choosing. This evening's Yiddish Voice features a mixture of talk, interviews, humor, and music. The show's usual host and producer Mark David is joined by Binyumen Schaechter as cohost, musical director, announcer, and sidekick, and Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath as gameshow coordinator, who leads several lucky contestants in a special exhibition round of the beloved quiz-show game "Freg-Geshleg". Several additional special guests also appear.
