In mid-January, the Michigan Rollverines – the organization’s youth wheelchair basketball program – traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana for its first competitive tournament since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament was a success – as has been the entire program, which is run by the U-M Adaptive and Inclusive Sports Experience, or UMAISE. Now, the Rollverines are looking to expand and give even more kids the opportunity to experience competitive sports. One of the priorities at U-M Health is to identify a health disparity within the organization and work to overcome it. Research showed that there is approximately a 14% disparity in getting the flu vaccine between pediatric patients who identify as Black and those who identify as white. Jeff Desmond, M.D., began his career at Michigan Medicine in 1993 as a lecturer in the Department of Surgery. Since then, he has taken on a number of different roles, including becoming the organization’s first director of clinical quality and, most recently, as an associate professor of emergency medicine and U-M Health’s chief medical officer.
