Godzilla 2014 managed to kick off a new era of monster movies, now titles the Monsterverse. Directed by Gareth Edwards of Rogue One/The Creator fame it became the latest americanized attempt to revamp Godzilla for the west after the disater that was Godzilla 1998. Whilst it might not be everyones cup of tea we thought it was pretty good with the inclusion of Bryan Cranston, new creatures in the form of the Muto's and the biggest Godzilla we had every seen. Great news. We're finally at the end of The Hunger Games trilogy and by that I mean the second part of the third movie. At the very least in this one at least a bunch of stuff happens including a big traps, big action sequences, big love triangles and big Julianne Moore being shot with an arrow. Because Harry Potter split it's last book into two movies and it worked really one that one time a decision was made to take the weakest book in The Hunger Games franchises, Mockingjay and do the same. After the huge success of the first Hunger Games an adaptation of the sequel book was inevitable. So a year later in 2013 Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen in a bigger budgeted follow up that asks the question, what if Hunger Games but more? With great new inclusion like Phillip Seymor Hoffman and...I dunno a poison fog or whatever this entry turned out to be the biggest box office return for the series before the decline. In the early 2010's every single dystopian young adult fantasy novel got a chance at a movie adaptation. Most either bombed at the box office or experienced a mild success before completely disappearing. One of the rare exceptions was The Hunger Games series, which exploded into cinemas in 2012 bringing Jennifer Lawrence mainsteam success. The concept is simple. Put a bunch of kids in an arena and have them kill each other. No wonder everybody loved it. Before the genesis of Batman there was The Shadow. But after the movie Batman 1989 there was The Shadow 1994. Before Captain America: The First Avengers director Joe Johnston brought us The Rocketeer. Second in our series of pulpy/throwback comic back adaptations (that failed) this adaptation takes us back to the 1930s, an era with rocket powered heros, thin moustachioed villians and swashbuckling action. Intended to kick off a new Indiana Jones styled adventure series it fell short of Disney's expectations and is largely forgotten despite being quite a fun ride. In 2014 the most powerful people on earth (Hollywood) decided to bless us all with a reboot of the original RoboCop. Taking some cues for the 1987 classic it brough Joel Kinnerman into the title role of Alex Murphy in a effort to again revamp the classic series. With a steller cast including Michael Keaton, Michael K Williams, Jack Earl Haley, Abbie Cornish, Sam Jackson it certainly tries some things but ultimately comes out feeling rather toothless. By RoboCop 3 the good people at Orion knew what kind of audience the franchise solely appealed to, children. RoboCop 2 was inevitable after the succcess of the original. And you know what? It could have been much worse. The original RoboCop from 1987 is incredible. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller as the titular RoboCop/Alex Murphy it remains one of the best sci-fi films of all time. With its retro futuristic, satirical and hyper-violent aesthetic it truly is a one of a kind experience that will never be replicated. It's the end of the road. We've reached peak Indiana Jones in the 2008 sequel, coming 19 years after the last in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We made it! The final movie before we can finally get to the good stuff. The Last Crusade goes deep into Indiana Jones lore with the adventure being shared with Henry Jones Senior played by Sean Connery. With the return of the Nazi's, a magical religious artifact, booby traps, an origin action sequence and tanks this one has it all. It's a great lead in to the fourth entry.
