Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Vermont Weather Podcast. It's Tuesday, February 24th.
Folks, step outside right now and you're feeling 16 degrees. That's eight degrees below normal for late February. Today's high only climbs to 21. This is the kind of cold that makes your steering wheel feel personal.
But here's what makes today interesting.. It's the calm before a sneaky little clipper system.
Southern Vermont, you're first in line. Snow rolls in around 3 A.M. Tonight. The heaviest burst hits near 5 A.M. You'll wake up to 1 to 3 inches on the ground. And get this. Temperatures actually rise overnight. You're at 4 degrees around 10 P.M., then climbing to 13 degrees by morning. Snow and warming at the same time. Only February pulls that trick.
Slide up through the central valleys. Your snow window is tight. Just 3 A.M. To 5 A.M. Around 2 A.M., winds flip from northwest to southeast, dragging in milder air. A dusting and a messy morning commute. That's your deal.
Now the Northeast Kingdom. You're sitting at 18 degrees today, dropping to minus 1 by 11 P.M. Coldest air in the state tonight. A brief snow chance around 5 A.M., then you're through it.
Wednesday is where things get spicy. That clipper brings snow squalls. Rapid visibility drops, slick roads, especially afternoon. But temperatures rocket up. Southern Vermont hits 36 degrees. Even the Kingdom reaches 31. That's a 15 degree jump from today.
Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday dry out. Highs settle into the 30s, right where late February should be. Saturday.. Teases us with mid 40s. Feels like March showed up early. Then Sunday a cold front yanks it all back. A 30 degree swing in 24 hours.
One bright spot. Sunrise at 6:40 A.M., sunset at 5:34 P.M. Three more minutes of daylight. Every minute counts this time of year.
I'll be tracking those squalls all night. Keep the ice scraper handy for Wednesday morning. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
