Investigating the Evil of Factory Farming. With Gail Eisnitz | Ep. 114
Gail is the winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare. She is the chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association. Her work as an investigator helped shut down some of the worst, most cruel animal‑exploitation operations in the U.S. But that's nothing compared to the impact of her first book, Slaughterhouse, which not only inspired many people to become vegan, but also shifted the focus of our entire movement toward factory farming, put pressure on regulators and lawmakers to enforce animal welfare laws, and became a template and inspiration for new generations of animal‑rights investigators. Now Gail is back with a new book, Out of Sight. I highly recommend the book. Visit the episode notes to get it now.In addition to talking about her book, we discussed the mysterious force for good that has guided Gail throughout her life, but also the evil she has confronted; how her life was threatened in this line of work, her thoughts on the welfarism vs. abolitionism debate, more specifically the cage-free standard, and much more.Follow or subscribe to the show now. You don't want to miss next week's episode — a special group conversation with 3 other animal rights heroes: Captain Paul Watson, Gary Yourofsky, and Dr. Jerry Vlasak. Share this episode with the vegans you know. Gail deserves so much praise for all she has done and is still doing for the animals. We should know her name and story. Animetrics is a women-led research and capacity-building organization, founded in 2023 by two economists from Türkiye, Gülbike Mirzaoğlu & Sueda Evirgen. They specialize in economics, impact evaluation, and research tailored to local contexts. Why Vegans Are Smarter. With Chris Bryant | Ep. 111
Today, we’re asking a fun—and maybe slightly provocative—question: are vegans smarter than most people? You’ve probably seen those articles listing brilliant minds who were vegetarian for ethical reasons—people like Einstein, Tolstoy, Mary Shelley, or Leonardo da Vinci. And if you’ve been with us for a while, you might remember episode 37, where we talked about one of those great minds: the literary genius Al‑Ma’arri, often considered the first vegan in recorded history. So today we’re wondering: did their intellect lead them to the ethical principles we hold? And beyond these outliers, do we see the same pattern in the general population? To explore this, I’m joined by Chris Bryant. Chris is a social scientist and an expert on meat reduction and alternative proteins. He leads Bryant Research, and he’s also a prolific creator on YouTube. I actually joined him during one of his livestreams to record this episode—it was my first time doing a livestream, so that was an adventure in itself. You can find links to connect with Chris in the episode notes. In our conversation, we talk about the relationship between intelligence and veganism, but we also get into psychopaths, the dangers of animal activism, cannibalism, his experiences debating the “meat heads” of the internet, and a whole lot more.Connect with Chris: https://www.youtube.com/@chrisbryantphdLearn more about Bryant Research: https://bryantresearch.co.uk/Al-Ma‘arri: The World's First Vegan. What If the World’s Religions Stood Up for Animals? With Joyce D'Silva | Ep. 110
Have you ever considered what it would mean if global religions echoed and supported our fight for animals? To explore this question, I have the honor of welcoming a true hero of the movement: Joyce D'Silva. Joyce has been vegan for 52 years—longer than I’ve been alive—and her contributions to animals are extraordinary. She wrote one of the first-ever vegan cookbooks, lead the adoption of major animal welfare legislation in the UK and Europe, and continues her work, to this day as Ambassador Emeritus for Compassion in World Farming and Patron of the Animal Interfaith Alliance. She is also the author of Animal Welfare in World Religion: Teaching and Practice. I highly recommend getting multiple copies —one for yourself and your enjoyment, and others to share with the religious leaders of your town.Beyond religion, Joyce and I discuss the nature of evil, the idea of publicly naming wealthy factory farm and slaughterhouse owners, the most surreal moment of her life, and much more.Get the book Animal Welfare in World Religion: Teaching and Practice now https://www.routledge.com/Animal-Welfare-in-World-Religion-Teaching-and-Practice/DSilva/p/book/9781032273990Learn more about Compassion in World Farming: https://www.ciwf.com/Learn more about the Animal Interfaith Alliance: https://animal-interfaith-alliance.com/Read Animals and Islam: https://lanternpm.org/book/animals-in-islam/Read Gandhi autobiography: https://www.mkgandhi.org/ebks/An-Autobiography.pdfIf you have any comment or question regarding the show, send a message to [email protected] The Vegan Report on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/veganreportpodcast/Follow The Vegan Report on X: https://x.com/veganreportshowMusic by FreeMusicForVideo from Pixabay

The End of Factory Farming!? With Bruce Friedrich | Ep. 109
Do you think ending factory farming is possible? If yes, what form of activism do you believe will stop factory farming for good? Institutional change? Street protests? Legal reforms?Well, our guest today, Bruce Friedrich, founder of the Good Food Institute, thinks ending factory farming is possible — but activism is not the answer. For him, the solution to this issue is cultivated meat: the perfect replacement for regular meat, because it would taste the same, cost the same, but with no health risks, environmental damage and certainly no animal suffering. In this episode, we discussed the new McVeggie that has launched in Canada, the consolidation of power in the hands of a few big food corporations, the Campbell Soup 3D printed lab-grown chicken debacle, and the opposition to cultivated meat by some animal advocates. Many of them have appeared on the show. I will add links in the description to all those episodes, including an amazing debate hosted by United Poultry Concerns featuring Bruce.Meat: How the Next Agricultural Revolution Will Transform Humanity's Favorite Food — and Our Future https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/235992470-meatIs Cell-Based Meat Good for Animals? The Future of Animal Rights. With Cat Kerr | Ep. 105
Have you ever watched a nature documentary in which a wild animal was filmed struggling for survival? Maybe running from a predator, desperately foraging for food or braving bad weather. What if I told you that we had a moral imperative to help that animal? To help all wildlife creatures. To play an active role in their welfare, even when their sufferings are not traced back to us.There is an organization called Wild Animal Initiative that studies this very question. Their communication director, Cat Kerr, joined me to talk about the implications of that revolutionary idea. We discussed how Wild Animal Initiative's work could be a cure for vegan misanthropy, the deadly risks of feeding birds, my awesome story of squirrel rescue, contraception for rodents, and much more.Wild Animal Initiative is one of the ten Animal Charity Evaluators recommended charities. I committed to interviewing every charity on that golden list, because I am really curious to learn who is behind the most effective efforts to advance the cause of animal rights.Connect with Wild Animal Initiative: https://www.wildanimalinitiative.org/Learn about Animal Charity Evaluators top 10 charities: https://animalcharityevaluators.org/recommended-charities/Follow The Vegan Report on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/veganreportpodcast/Follow The Vegan Report on X: https://x.com/veganreportshowMusic by Sergii Pavkin from Pixabay

Hiking Raves Are Terrorism Against Animals.
The Party Scientist is an entrepreneur, an event planner who has organized (might still be operating) many hiking raves. I discovered him on Instagram, where he regularly promotes his hiking raves through multiple accounts. He opened my eyes on the new trend of hiking raves, a form of animal cruelty I wish to denounce.Authorities put damper on hike rave: https://www.nsnews.com/local-news/authorities-put-damper-on-hike-rave-3055859Why Chickens Don't Belong in your Backyard. https://rss.com/podcasts/veganreport/2214334/My message to Jacques:Hi Jacques,My name is Rayane, and I am messaging you today about the hiking raves you organize.I am happy for your success. However, can you please consider that your forest raves are disturbing countless animals and insects?Human-generated sounds negatively impacts animals by interfering with communication, foraging, navigation, and reproduction, potentially leading to stress, habitat abandonment, and even injury or death.By avoiding loud music or screams in the forest, you are providing a safe and peaceful environment for innocent beings who struggle to survive.Maybe your groups could wear headphones or organize those raves in the artificial environment of a greenhouse or glasshouse.I hope this message finds you well.Thank you,RayaneFollow The Vegan Report on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/veganreportpodcast/Follow The Vegan Report on X: https://x.com/veganreportshow

Feeding the Vegan Soul. With Victoria Moran | Ep. 96
According to a 2017 survey, 73% of vegans self-identify as atheists or agnostics. That’s why I know this might not be the most popular opinion, but I deeply believe that leading a spiritual practice is not only a powerful way to deal with the struggle of being an outspoken vegan in a non-vegan world, but also an essential part of a happy healthy life.To discuss the power of spirituality, I am joined by Victoria Moran. Victoria is a longtime animal activist, successful author (she has written more than 13 books!), fellow podcaster (she is host of the Main Street Vegan podcast), and yogi, During the interview, Victoria references many great resources to kick start your spiritual journey. Jane Goodall VS. David Attenborough. With Alex Ventimilla | Ep. 95
Today, we compare two different approaches to advancing the environmental cause from two vegan giants: Jane Goodall and David Attenborough. CORRECTION: David Attenborough is not vegan. "(...) though he has significantly reduced his meat consumption for environmental reasons and recommends plant-based diets. He no longer eats red meat and consumes cheese and fish, a decision he has called a "middle-class hypocrisy" given his public advocacy."Both have released documentaries focused on the climate crisis, animal welfare, and their personal journeys into activism. Jane Goodall's documentary, The Hope, is available on YouTube. David Attenborough's A Life on Our Planet, is on Netflix. You’ll find the links in the episode notes. To discuss this topic, I’m joined by the amazing Alex Ventimilla Sanchez, professor in the Department of English & Film Studies at the University of Alberta. How to be a Sneaky Vegan | Science of Activism
I have a Big Announcement to make! In addition to the usual Tuesday episodes, I invite you to tune in every Wednesday for a special episode about the science of activism.Every Wednesday, I will give the microphone to researchers who study the effectiveness of animal advocacy and vegan activism. Learn from them what are the best, and worst ways to make a positive difference in the world.Since starting this podcast, I have come across strong - some would even say stubborn - opinions on what the way forward looks like. I even developed my own strong opinions. But this is our reality check. A way to verify if our beliefs are backed by evidence and check if our perception of reality is not distorted. So connect every Wednesday and become the most informed and effective activist out there. Remembering Jane Goodall. With Mary Lee, Allan & Madeline | Ep. 94
Throughout her life and remarkable career, Jane inspired generations of scientists, brought hope to countless people from all walks of life, and urged us all to remember that “every single one of us makes a difference every day – it is up to us as to the kind of difference we make”To discuss Jane Goodall's life and her legacy, I have with me three people who have met her and whose lives have been touched by her life work.I am joined by Dr. Mary Lee Jensvold, the Primate Communication Scientist and Associate Director at Fauna Foundation, the only Chimp Sanctuary in Canada, and Friends of Washoe, a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of chimpanzees. She is also the very first guest of the Vegan Report (yes, episode 1). I can say, with confidence, that without her voice, this podcast would not exist.I am also joined by Dr. Allan Kornberg, a pediatrician who first met Dr. Goodall in his role as board chair with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Allan supports plant-based diet change as executive director of Nutrition for Families and as a board member with Physicians Association for Nutrition. Other current affiliations include Treasurer for both Wilberforce Institute and Dharma Voices for Animals, two amazing nonprofits we have covered on this show. And lastly, Madeline Krasno, Founder and Executive Director of Justify, the only organization in the world focused on the human cost of animal experimentation and the uniquely intimate, often painful bond between lab workers and the animals they try to care for. She appeared many times on the podcast, A testament to how deeply I value her voice and contributions.Share this episode with the vegans you know - this episode is an inspiring invitation to action. Why Plants Are Not 100% Vegan. With Meg Kelly | Ep. 93
Did you know that most of the plant-based food you are eating is grown using animal products as fertilizers? Manure, blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, and fish emulsion, All obtained from the animal exploitation industry. But there is a better, safer, more sustainable and ethical alternative: veganic farming. Veganic agriculture uses plant-based techniques instead of animal products to grow crops. So, for example, instead of using shrimp compost for fertilization, the veganic farmer will use vegetable compost, chipped branch wood or mulch. To discuss this topic, I have with me Meg Kelly. Meg co-founded the Veganic Agriculture Network (https://goveganic.net/). She also teaches the Learn Veganic (https://learnveganic.com/) online gardening course to empower people around the world to grow their own fruits and veggies at home.We discussed why organic farming is problematic, the arsenic in rice, the E.Coli in lettuce, what it means to be vegan when the plants you eat were grown with animal products, and much more.To learn more about veganic farming, sign up for free to the 2025 Edition of the Veganic Summit. Big Poultry Owns Your Backyard. With Liz, Juliane & Haidy | Ep. 92
I want to discuss the tens of millions of hens that are kept in the backyards of your neighbors. There are currently more than 85 million hens in the US, at least 1,2 million in the UK, 2 million in Australia - and those global numbers: they were a fraction of that only yesterday. Virtually all of those hens have been bred by the poultry industry. And for everyone of them, there was a male chick systematically eliminated. For me, this is a fire in the house situation, and I wanted to talk with other vegans who share that feeling with me, who think it is time to sound the alarm bell and wake up other vegans to this unfolding tragedy. So for this episode, a group conversation with Juliane Priesemeister, the ED of the Truth Organization, who are behind Egg-Truth.com, the reference for everything related to the poultry industry. Haidy Mansfield, Founder of Belle & Fleur, a UK based non-profit dedicated to rescuing hens. Vegans Respond to Jordan Peterson. With John Sanbonmatsu | Ep. 91
Today, we respond to an episode from the Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, posted on April 17 and titled "The Best Argument Against Veganism".For that episode, Dr. Peterson interviews Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farm and an outspoken proponent of regenerative animal farming. Joel Salatin happens to be featured in Chapter 8 of the Omnivore's Dilemma, the best-seller of author Michael Pollan. Both of them, Salatin and Pollan, have been instrumental in popularizing the idea that animal exploitation can be humane and ecological. To debunk this Jordan Peterson interview and set the record straight, I have with me the perfect guest: John Sanbonmatsu. John has written the Omnivore's Deception, which completely obliterates the Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. Why Chickens Don't Belong in your Backyard.
"Does eating eggs from your backyard chickens vegan?" This question just accepts the premise that owning backyard chickens in the first place is acceptable. Maybe if you own lots of land in a rural area, where farming already takes place. But this idea that vegans from the city or the suburbs can totally adopt rescue hens, put them in their small backyards and, in fact, we should give that a cool name - like micro sanctuary- is totally wrong. It means we have accepted that this is the new normal. Retiring from Sanctuary Life. With Catherine Gagnieux | Ep. 89
Today, the story of someone who had the wisdom to let go for the better. Her name is Catherine and she is the founder of SAFE sanctuary, which was the first and only farm animal sanctuary in Quebec, hands down the worst Canadian province in terms of animal welfare. SAFE, for more than 20 years, was central to Catherine's life. Imagine devoting most of your time, money, energy and thoughts to one project. The sanctuary was part of her identity. Yet, when she realized that her health was declining and that put the lives of her animal residents, who she calls her babies, in danger - she made the tough call to relocate her animals and pull the plug on the sanctuary. This is an exclusive interview on what it means to retire from full time activism. I asked Catherine if she had any regrets, what was the reaction of her supporters, her thoughts on the future of Quebec and backyard chickens, and much much morePlease consider making a donation to SAFE in order to finance the relocation of its animals: https://donorbox.org/donner-a-safeFollow The Vegan Report on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/veganreportpodcast/Follow The Vegan Report on X: https://x.com/veganreportshowMusic by raspberrymusic from PixabayPicture from Frédéric Côté/Archives La Tribune

Are Vegans Neurodivergent? With Sabina Bravo | Ep. 88
Today, we are promoting neurodiversity. Maybe it's the first time you are hearing about neurodiversity. It is the concept that there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and neurological differences in people - such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, OCD and more - should not be automatically classified as inherent flaws or deficits. To discuss this topic, I have with me Sabina Bravo, the founder of Animal Law Focus, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing legal protections for farm animals, especially in the Global South. We talked about the link between neurodivergence and veganism, Elon Musk and entrepreneurship, the obstacles neurodivergent people face at work, working from home, and much more.Visit the episode's notes to connect with Sabina and learn more about the Animal Law Focus. Also, for more episodes shedding light on the incredible diversity of people in this movement, including the diversity of brains, follow or subscribe to the show.
