So, what exactly is Pascal's Wager? Let’s break it down.
The French philosopher Blaise Pascal proposed the wager in the 17th century. It's not an argument for or against the existence of God, but more of a rational bet on what belief in God can offer you.
Pascal's Wager essentially says:
- If you believe in God and you’re right, you gain eternal happiness (in heaven).
- If you believe in God and you’re wrong, you lose very little—perhaps some time spent in worship or certain pleasures.
- If you don’t believe in God and you’re wrong, you face eternal suffering (hell).
- If you don’t believe in God and you’re right, then nothing really happens.
