The “you’re an imposter” mantra is beautiful oft repeated phrase from one’s inner critic. But there are a lot of other phrases the inner critic uses, so it’s kind of a subset of this self loathing that goes on. You correctly linked it to the kind of merging of sense of self and self worth with work. But I would argue that it’s even deeper. It’s merging a sense of self and self worth with almost anything that’s extrinsic to this meatball called me. One of the more profound teachings from Buddhism goes like this: you are lovable, you are worthy. Not because of anything you’ve done, but simply because you exist. – Jerry Colonna
