093 - Planning the 2017 Spring Turkey Hunting Trip

In this week's episode, I let you in on the beginning stages of my planning the 2017 spring turkey hunting trip out of state. This year, my buddies and I plan on hunting in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. 4 of us killing a bird in each state will take a great deal of luck and skill as well as a great deal of careful planning before we ever leave home. Over the next couple of episodes, I'm going to take you through the process of planning next year's hunt with me. From talking to wildlife biologists, park rangers, and NWTF biologists to choosing dates to ironing out the logistics of the hunt, you will get to hear exactly what my buddies and I go through in planning one of the incredible hunts that we do each year.

091 - The World Deer and Turkey Expo Interviews

This week I have a couple of new and exciting products that I want to introduce to you in the World Deer and Turkey Expo interviews that I conducted this past weekend. In this episode, you will hear of a great new product that I think all of us turkey hunters will want to check out. Phil Bullock with Bunkerhead joins me to discuss the Bunkerhead facemask system. The Bunkerhead system effectively keeps your facemask off of your face by clipping onto the bill of your ball cap. This system is great for those turkey hunters who do not like the feel of a facemask on their noses and faces, but it is also good for those hunters who wear eyeglasses. I also interview Tom Hurlburt with Knockdown Outdoors about their new smartphone application that acts as a digital signout board for your hunting property. This awesome new app has a text feature built into it that will enable you to text with your hunting buddies through the app as well as weather and wind direction. I highly recommend you download the Knockdown Outdoors app from iTunes and the Google store and test drive this new application that can help to keep you safe while in the woods as well. Lastly, I put my phone down for 30 seconds while at the show, and Son of the South, Josh Carney, commandeers it. Join Josh as he takes you on an audio tour of The World Deer and Turkey Expo. Also, hear Josh duplicate a seldom heard, rarely seen animal call upon my request. This is a world premiere of a call that Josh has never publicly made before, and you are going to hear it first here on The Turkey Hunter. This one will blow your mind and your speakers, so you may want to turn the volume down a bit towards the end of the interview.

089 - Wild Turkey Diseases with Heather Fenton

In today's episode, I am discussing wild turkey diseases with Heather Fenton with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens, GA. Dr. Fenton discusses Avian Pox, Blackhead Disease, Lympho Proliferative Disease, Salmonella, and other diseases that affect wild turkeys. We also discuss the symptoms of the diseases, the causes of the diseases, and the mortality rates of turkeys that get the diseases. In addition, we discuss the likelihood that those diseases can be spread to humans, precautions to take while handling a bird we suspect to be diseased (as well as birds that we are cleaning/processing), what to do if we harvest a bird that we suspect to be diseased. While there is nothing we, as hunters, can do to cure a bird that is diseased, we can help to do a few things to prevent the further spread of these wild turkey diseases. One of the ways that we can prevent the spread of diseases in wild turkeys is to avoid artificial feeding of birds. Artificially feeding wild turkeys concentrates birds into smaller areas for longer periods of time and increases the chances that an infected bird will come into contact with a healthy bird and potentially spread the disease within the flock. The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study was founded in 1957 by the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies to determine the cause of widespread die-offs of white-tailed deer. Before the founding of SCWDS, little was known about diseases or sicknesses in wildlife. Sickness or death among wild animals spawned speculations, accusations, and wild myths. Not long after it was formed, SCWDS began to provide answers to many long-standing questions, and today it has grown to be a multipurpose wildlife disease research and study organization.

085 - Summer and Fall Plantings for Wild Turkeys with Scott Bronkema

In this episode, we are talking about summer and fall plantings for wild turkeys with Scott Bronkema, with Boneyard Seed, LLC. Ensuring that the wild turkeys on your property have enough food to eat year round, will go a long way to helping to make sure that you have turkeys to hunt during the fall and spring seasons. Chicory, chufa, peas, clovers, and grains are all great foods for turkeys and will not only help to draw turkeys onto your property but will help to keep them there. Before those seeds and grains are planted, making sure your soil is in ideal condition is critical to the success of your plantings. Another consideration for a great summer or fall food plot is proper fertilization as well. Scott and I discuss all of the above this week, so please listen in.

082 - Factors Affecting Gobbling in Wild Turkeys

In this episode I discuss some of the factors affecting gobbling in wild turkeys with wildlife biologist Derek Colbert. While getting his Master's Degree at the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry, Derek Colbert headed up a study to determine how weather, nesting, and hunting pressure affect gobbling in wild turkeys. During his study, Derek and other volunteers gathered and analyzed over 20,000 hours of audio to determine number of wild turkey gobbles heard at 14 different listening stations on two different pieces of property in Southwest Georgia - one hunted parcel and one non hunted parcel. The goal of this part of a larger overall study was to determine what effects different weather variables played on the amount of gobbling by male wild turkeys and whether the timing of the hunting seasons have a negative effect on the breeding cycle of wild turkeys. The findings from the study are quite interesting, and further prove the unpredictability of wild turkeys and why they are such an amazing game animal to pursue. Listen in and enjoy learning more about some factors affecting gobbling in wild turkeys.

074 - How Weather Affects Wild Turkeys with Preston Pittman

Preston Pittman with Pittman Game Calls and Long Leaf Camo discusses how weather affects wild turkeys in this week's episode. Not many of us turkey hunters always have the luxury of hunting only on "blue bird" days - those days where it is sunny and 65 degrees with no wind. For those of us who take turkey hunting trips out of state each year or who live in states that have very short week long seasons, we have to hunt no matter what the weather is. Wild turkeys will move to different terrain when different weather conditions occur. On days when the weather is bad, we can greatly increase our chances of success by knowing where the turkeys are. Once we know where the turkeys are, all we have to do is figure out how to hunt them. Of course, we can't guarantee every single turkey will react the same way to certain weather conditions, but we can make predictions off of our past observations. In this episode, Preston Pittman shares his knowledge of where we can find turkeys during periods of high wind, hot temperatures, snow, or rain. Using this information during turkey season can help us to have more success when bad weather interferes with our turkey hunting.

073 - Dissecting a Diaphragm Turkey Call with Mitchell Johnston

Today, we are dissecting a diaphragm turkey call with Mitchell Johnston from Dead End Game Calls. Mitchell shares with us what goes into a diaphragm, or mouth, call. Diaphragm turkey calls are a great method for calling turkeys while keeping your hands free. Diaphragm calls do have a couple of downfalls though. Diaphragm turkey calls can be difficult for the beginning user to master, and some users just can't operate a call because the calls in their mouths make them gag. Despite these downfalls, diaphragm calls are outstanding hunting calls if you purchase the right one and practice with it often. Mitchell will teach us the difference in sound between a 2, 3, and 4 reed call as well as the different cuts that go into the top reed of a diaphragm turkey call.

Keith also shares some tips for setting up a ground blind to make sure that we do not spook an approaching Tom because our blind fabric is too shiny or because the fabric is flapping in the wind. Keith also shares with us info on how to choose the best location to put a blind so that we can maximize our odds of success. 071 - Urban Turkey Hunting with Scott Davis

Scott Davis with Urban Hunting TV joins us in this episode to discuss urban turkey hunting. As development encroaches on wild turkey habitat and wild turkeys expand their range, urban encounters with wild turkeys have become more and more common. It seems that almost daily a new video wild turkey attack video is being posted on YouTube. These attacks are more common because encounters between wild turkeys and humans are more common and the turkeys have lost their fear of humans. One way to humanely control any wild game population is through hunting. Many municipalities have laws against firing a weapon (gun or bow) within the city limits, and this law prevents many of us from being able to hunt these overgrown populations of wild game. Some states have laws which override the local laws preventing discharge of a weapon within city limits as long as the person firing the weapon is doing so in an ethical and responsible manner while hunting. The states that have such a law open the opportunity for us to hunt within the boundaries of a municipality in that state and, of course, open the doors for urban turkey hunting. Scott shares with us how he first got into urban turkey hunting, how he approaches land owners about hunting on their urban properties, and his approach for hunting those properties once he receives permission to hunt. When urban turkey hunting, care must be taken to prevent a confrontation with neighbors and/or anti-hunters. Scott also shares with us a few tips he has learned over the years to prevent those confrontations from arising. He also shares a few ways he maintains a strong relationship between himself and the property owner so that he has a place to hunt in the future as well. Listen in to this week's episode to learn everything you can about urban turkey hunting.

069 - Preparing Yourself for Turkey Hunting Season

There are several things we can do to improve our odds of success in the turkey woods this spring. We can practice our calling, buy new camo, do some extra scouting, pattern our shotguns and shells, etc. There is probably one thing that you haven't thought about that you can do to give you a better chance at success. Exercising is one facet of preparation for turkey season that is often overlooked. Being in better shape to hold your shotgun and walk mile after mile with a heavy vest on your shoulders and heavy boots on your feet can often make the difference on filling a tag or not. I can think of several turkeys that I killed that I would not have killed if I was not in decent physical condition. I can honestly say that exercising during the offseason has made me a better turkey hunter, and I know you can benefit as well. Listen in to this week's episode as Jon Vogel, personal trainer with Iron Tribe fitness, shares some things that we can do to get in better physical condition to handle those long days of hunting and sitting in those awkward positions while we wait for that gobbling turkey to come into shotgun range.

067 - Bowhunting Wild Turkeys with Lynne Frady

In this episode, Lynne Frady with Team Frady and Mathews bows pro staff shares information with us about bowhunting wild turkeys. Lynne talks about minimizing movement while drawing the bow, using decoys, the effective bow range for a turkey, broadheads, minimal draw weights, and shot placement. She shares her thoughts about how crucial shot placement is when bowhunting wild turkeys because the vitals in a turkey are so small. A well placed arrow means the difference between a dead turkey and a wounded turkey that a hunter may not recover. This is a great episode that I really learned a lot from.
