Show Notes

In this special episode of The Trial: USA, we examine one of the most hotly contested death investigations in recent history - the case of Ellen Greenberg.

Ellen was a 27-year-old teacher from Philadelphia who was found dead in her apartment in 2011, having suffered twenty stab wounds - many to the back of her head. Despite the circumstances, her death was ruled a suicide. That conclusion has been questioned for more than a decade.

Ellen’s case has since become a defining story within the true-crime genre, inspiring countless podcasts, a book-length investigation by Nancy Grace, and widespread public scrutiny over how suspicious deaths are investigated - and how law enforcement is held to account.

In this episode, we begin by hearing directly from Ellen’s parents, Joshua Greenberg and Sandee Greenberg, in an interview conducted by senior reporter Laura Collins, who has covered the case for nearly fifteen years. They speak about who Ellen was, the unanswered questions surrounding her death, and the impact of the suicide ruling on their family.
