Ep 842Roland Garros Day 5 - Barty out; Fiery Federer forces way through

Catherine, David and Matt recorded tonight's podcast while watching Rafael Nadal beat Richard Gasquet for the 17th time in a row, on a day at Roland Garros which was rather marred by the exit through injury of Ash Barty. What happened to her? And how does her retirement affect the women's draw? Elsewhere, there's a look at how everyone's favourite Federer, grumpy Federer, beat Marin Cilic in four sets, reflections on sublime performances from Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek, growing excitement about how Sloane Stephens is looking, shock at Philipp Kohlschreiber's win over Aslan Karatsev, chatter about a big day for the teenage trio of Sinner, Musetti and Alcaraz, and a look ahead to a third round blockbuster between Coco Gauff and Jen Brady. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 839Roland Garros Day 2 - Osaka withdraws and tennis reels; Federer returns

As the Paris curfew came into effect, day two of Roland Garros ended in a silence which reflected the sad and somber mood after Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal. On the podcast, we begin by talking about that, wishing Osaka well, and wondering how it all came to this. Turning our attention to the tennis, we discuss the lovely vibes between Iga Swiatek and Kaja Juvan, a strong start for Serena Williams, an important win in a fun match for Sofia Kenin, an early exit for an under-prepared Bianca Andreescu, the disappointing lack of shenanigans between Medvedev and Bublik, Medvedev’s insights about how covid affected him, an escape for Jannik Sinner against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and Roger Federer’s winning return to Grand Slam play after 487 days. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 838Roland Garros Day 1 - Slams escalate Osaka row; Thiem falls

A lot happened on the opening day of Roland Garros 2021, but it was still a day where the headlines were dominated by Naomi Osaka. We discuss Osaka’s victory over Patricia Maria Tig, her on court interview, and the joint statement released by the Grand Slams warning that she could face expulsion if her media boycott continues. Was such an escalation necessary? And how could this all end up? Elsewhere, we analyse Dominic Thiem’s loss from two sets up against Pablo Andujar and ponder what’s going on with him, react to more disappointment at a major for Dan Evans, and cover an impressive win for Victoria Azarenka over fellow two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. And lots more, including some tales from the press room. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 837Roland Garros preview and all about Naomi Osaka

The draws are out, most of the top players have spoken to the media, and the opening day of Roland Garros 2021 is almost here. We discuss the significance of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all being in the same half of the draw, the pressure on Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final, the mouthwatering first-round clash between Alexander Bublik and Daniil Medvedev, the main contenders in the women’s draw, and what to expect on the opening day. But the build-up has of course been overshadowed by Naomi Osaka’s decision not to speak to the press during the tournament. We analyse her statement, give our reaction to her decision, and discuss how other players have responded. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 836Roland Garros Re-Lived: Jim Courier - from Agassi’s shadow to global dominance

When Jim Courier beat Andre Agassi in the 1991 French Open final, it wasn’t just his first Grand Slam title, it wasn’t just a win which would set him on his way to dominating the sport for the next two years, it was also a sweet moment of retribution against an old roommate from the Nick Bollettieri Academy who had been tipped for greatness ahead of him. On this episode, with the help of Mary Carillo and Courier’s coaches at the time, Jose Higueras and Brad Stine, we tell that story. What was life like at the Bollettieri Academy? Why was Agassi favoured over Courier? How did Higueras and Stine develop Courier’s game to turn him into a champion? What happened for Stine to confront Courier in a car park in Rome prior to Roland Garros? In what way did Stine’s one-year-old daughter play a part in helping Courier win a five-setter in round three? And how did Courier’s tactical switch during a rain delay change the course of the final? We also discuss the narrative that Courier got to the top through hard work rather than talent, the reasons why his results fell away quite suddenly, and his life after tennis. Plus, with this final falling right in the middle of the Lost Law Years, and playing an integral part in David’s discovery of tennis, you can expect plenty of 90s nostalgia from David. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 834Roland Garros Re-Lived: Suzanne Lenglen

In this episode of Tennis Re-Lived we venture back one hundred years to cover the remarkable career and life of tennis’ first superstar, Suzanne Lenglen, whose name now adorns the second show court at Roland Garros. We talk about her upbringing by an overbearing father, how the war both delayed her career and created a world which was ready for her, the extraordinary records she achieved in amateur tennis, her boundary breaking fashion choices, the reasons why she was so famous, her controversial decision to turn professional, and her lasting legacy in tennis. Along the way we cover some of the landmark moments of her career, including her memorable first and last appearances at Wimbledon, her ill-fated trip to America in 1921, and her match of the century against Helen Wills in 1926. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 833Rome - 10 for Nadal, History for Swiatek, Catherine meets Cobra Kai

The current Roland Garros champions - Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek - reigned in Rome last week. But they took different routes to the title. Catherine, David and Matt react to Swiatek double bagelling Karolina Pliskova and Nadal earning a tight three set win in his 57th meeting with Novak Djokovic. How much of the 6-0 6-0 scoreline was about Swiatek being amazing and how much was it down to Pliskova’s performance? Where does Swiatek’s ruthlessness come from? Why was Djokovic vs. Tsitsipas so wonderful? How should Djokovic feel about his week in Rome? Is Nadal in perfect shape for Roland Garros? And how has the Nadal-Djokovic rivalry evolved on clay over the past few years? There’s also a look ahead to next week which sees Serena Williams in Parma and Roger Federer’s return in Geneva, an update on Andy Murray, and a huge tangent about Cobra Kai after Lorenzo Sonego gets a mention. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 831Madrid - Sabalenka, Zverev take titles

The last few weeks have seen the blossoming of a new rivalry in women’s tennis and the latest meeting between Ash Barty and Aryna Sabalenka didn’t disappoint. Catherine, David and Matt discuss how Sabalenka won the opening set of the Madrid final 6-0, the impressive way she competed in the decider, and whether or not this victory changes her prospects at Roland Garros. We then turn our attention to the men’s event. Is Matteo Berrettini a better player than we’d realised? Why did we enjoy watching him compete so much in Madrid? Does Dominic Thiem have enough time to get ready for Roland Garros? And what should we make of Rafael Nadal’s week? Finally, we analyse the title-winning tennis of Alexander Zverev and reflect on how we should cover him when the allegations against him continue to make us feel uncomfortable. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 828Madrid underway, My Perfect Team Event and who should Andy Murray coach?

In this fragmented week for tennis - with WTA Madrid getting underway while ATP events take place in Estoril and Munich - we’ve split today’s podcast into two halves. We begin by covering the incredible WTA draw in Madrid, Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal, the return to form for Kevin Anderson and Marin Cilic, and news that there will be play on Middle Sunday at Wimbledon from 2022 onwards. Then, in part two, we tackle questions, guest edited by listener and Kickstarter backer Eli Kronenberg, on the biggest threats to tennis as we know it, what a World Cup of tennis could look like, whether the increasing longevity of players will be the new norm, TV camera angles, the potential for a grass court Masters 1000 event, players who would provide for a good coaching opportunity for Andy Murray, and the Grand Slam prospects of Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Aryna Sabalenka and Jen Brady. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. And what should we make of Rafael Nadal’s first tournament back on his favourite surface? We also cover a career best week for Astra Sharma at Charleston 2, discuss Ons Jabeur’s ongoing quest for a first WTA title, round up the results from the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs and react to news that Roger Federer will play on clay in Geneva and at Roland Garros this season. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 824Dirtball Dan Downs Djokovic

After Dan Evans stunned Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo for the biggest win of his career, we thought we’d better record a podcast. How much was Evans’ victory down to his inspired play and how much was it due to Djokovic being below par? Can we read anything into this defeat for Djokovic? Where has Evans’ clay court form come from? And in what way is his new approach on the surface similar to the one taken by Tim Henman when he reached the French Open semi-finals in 2004? Elsewhere, we discuss Stefanos Tsitsipas’ unpleasant rant at an umpire, dominant victories for Rafael Nadal, an inauspicious start to life with Toni Nadal for Felix Auger-Aliassime, progress for 15-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova in Charleston, and Wimbledon’s expansion plans. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 822Esther Vergeer - Undefeated

Our guest this week is wheelchair tennis legend Esther Vergeer. One of the sport’s greatest ever champions, Vergeer spoke to Catherine about how turning to sport helped her after she became paralysed from the waist down as a child, why she embraced using a mental coach throughout her career, what it’s like psychologically to be on a 470-match winning streak, the time she almost lost at the Beijing Paralympics, designing her own wheelchair, how she feels about the word “inspirational” to describe disabled athletes, and her hopes for more integration in the future. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 821Hurkacz hits new heights, Miami twice for Barty, and let’s talk about doubles

The final few days in Miami gave Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts much to discuss. In what way did Ash Barty make a statement by defending her title? How much did we miss out on by not seeing a fully fit Bianca Andreescu in the final? Were we surprised by the level of tennis Hubert Hurkacz produced to win his maiden Masters 1000 title? What’s special about Jannik Sinner’s approach to tennis? And did we sit the limit to Andrey Rublev’s game? We also get stuck into the week’s doubles results, examine some of the reasons why we don’t talk more about doubles, cover the latest happy development in G.E.M.S life, and touch on the uncertainty surrounding Roland Garros next month. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 820Barty makes moves in Miami

As the Miami Open reaches the closing stages, Catherine Whitaker and David Law catch up to discuss the tournament’s major storylines from the second week so far: Why are David and Catherine surprised by how excited they are about Sebastian Korda’s potential? How does Roberto Bautista Agut cause Daniil Medvedev problems every time they face off? Was Stefanos Tsitsipas correct when he called his defeat to Hubert Hurkacz a ‘self explosion’? Why is Jannik Sinner Catherine’s candidate to be the future metronomic winner of titles? How well has Ash Barty been playing en route to her second straight Miami final? Could the moment Maria Sakkari saved six match points against Jessica Pegula be a turning point in her career? What on earth happened for Naomi Osaka to lose a 6-0 set as well as her 23-match winning streak? And how has Dan Evans made his way into the doubles final? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 817Karatsev conquers all, Kasatkina comes back, and what’s that brewing in Miami?

E

Catherine, David and Matt round off the results from last week’s slate of tournaments, including debut titles for Aslan Karatsev and Leylah Fernandez, yet another semi-final defeat for Denis Shapovalov, more fireworks from Lorenzo Musetti in Acapulco, a mid-match earthquake, a tense victory for Alexander Zverev over Stefanos Tsitsipas, and the continued resurgence of Daria Kasatkina in St Petersburg. This week, the players (minus Serena Williams and the Big 3) are heading to Miami for the first combined 1000 event of the season. We discuss the withdrawals, the growing number of men’s voices expressing discontent about the current state of tennis, rumours that the PTPA might be planning some sort of action, and Catherine’s interview with Andy Murray for Prime Video. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Garbiñe Muguruza has finally turned her fantastic form into a title with victory in Dubai. In what way was she feeling the pressure of ending her title drought? How much of a role has Conchita Martínez played in her improved consistency? And how might her season develop from here? As for the woman she beat in the final, Barbora Krejčíková, David explains why we’ve mistakenly considered her to be exclusively a doubles player up until now, the advice she received from her former coach Jana Novotna, and the way her singles results have improved since tennis re-started last summer. Elsewhere, we discuss the way in which lengthy bathroom breaks in women’s tennis are talked about and whether there needs to be a rule change, we cover a 10th career title for new World No.2 Daniil Medvedev in Marseille, and we dive deep into the playing style, career and hair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 812Inside the mind of Andy Murray

We discuss what we’ve seen so far this week in Doha and Rotterdam, including a barnstormer between Garbine Muguruza and Aryna Sabalenka, progress for Kei Nishikori, the end of Stefanos Tsitsipas’ losing streak in doubles, and Andy Murray’s 7-5, 6-2 defeat against Andrey Rublev. Hear part of Murray’s fascinating post match press conference in which he explains why he was disappointed in his performance and why he will continue to demand a lot of himself. There’s also news of Marcus Willis’ retirement and the discovery of Juan Manuel Cerúndolo. Then, we move on to answering more listener questions. In best-of-five set matches, should there be a games-won threshold that the losing player must reach after two sets to trigger five sets? Is there such a thing as a straight-sets classic? What is our best prediction of what Federer can achieve when he returns? Is percentage of second serves won the most underrated but critical statistic in tennis? Who would be involved in our ultimate mixed doubles match? What role did tennis play in rescuing David from the Lost Law Years? Should the tours be regionalised post pandemic to make the sport more economically viable? E

Just when Stefanos Tsitsipas thought he’d scaled his Everest by beating Rafael Nadal, he ran into Daniil Medvedev. Ep 806Aus Open Day 10 - Tsitsipas conquers Nadal and Barty loses her way

What a day at the Australian Open: one that began with Ash Barty’s shock defeat to Karolina Muchova, and ended with Stefanos Tsitsipas' remarkable comeback against Rafael Nadal. We tried our best to put it all into words on the podcast. How did Tsitsipas turn the match around? What happened to Nadal in the third set tiebreak and beyond? Why was Barty vs. Muchova so weird? What role did the medical timeout play in the match? Will this defeat leave scar tissue for Barty? What does it mean that Jennifer Brady has backed up her US Open run? And how did Daniil Medvedev display his dominance over Andrey Rublev? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 804Aus Open Day 8 - A dud of a day but the pod’s great, honest

Day 8 didn’t live up to the heights of previous days, with no upsets and no epics. But with the quarter-final line-up complete, we still had lots to cover. Has Jennifer Brady’s rise given Jessica Pegula belief? Why was Rafael Nadal vs. Fabio Fognini so disappointing? Will Matteo Berrettini’s withdrawal help or hinder Stefanos Tsitsipas? And is the lack of crowds benefitting Ash Barty? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 803Aus Open Day 7 - Slam finals galore in round 4; Thiem tonked

All eyes were on the blockbuster Naomi Osaka vs. Garbine Muguruza and Serena Williams vs. Aryna Sabalenka matches on Sunday, and they didn’t disappoint. How did Osaka manage to raise her game when she needed it most? Did Muguruza get tight at the finish? And where did Serena’s incredible movement and defence come from? We also discuss what makes Su-Wei Hsieh’s presence in the quarter-finals so exciting for the tournament and why Simona Halep seems to be in a really good place. In the men’s draw, Novak Djokovic took to the court and beat Milos Raonic for the 12th time. How much did his side strain affect his play? And how might he fare against Alexander Zverev next? Plus, how did Grigor Dimitrov beat Dominic Thiem so easily? And what happened for Aslan Karatsev to come from two sets down to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 802Aus Open Day 6 - Silent, subdued, but intriguing

Saturday was the quietest day of this Australian Open so far, in all senses of the word. The fans were sorely missed and there wasn’t quite the same amount of drama or fun as previous days. But it was still a Grand Slam day, meaning there was still plenty for us to discuss, including:Silent stadia - pros and consNadal makes progress; Will Fognini stop him?Berrettini wins, but bigger battles awaitTsitsipas enjoys a quiet lifeWhat happened to Daniil Medvedev?Just how good is Casper Ruud?Barty braced for deep run. Ep 801Aus Open Day 5 - Last night at the tennis

Well that was one of the most surreal nights of tennis we’ve ever seen. The announcement of a Victoria state lockdown from midnight in Melbourne put the attendance of fans at the Australian Open on a ticking clock and led to one of the most electric atmospheres imaginable for all five mesmerising sets of Nick Kyrgios vs. Dominic Thiem and then to a mass exodus of fans mid-way through Novak Djokovic’s match against Taylor Fritz. The rest of it, as Djokovic struggled on through injury to win in a decider, was played in eerie silence. We did our best to process it all on the podcast. It was also a day which saw Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek set up blockbuster R4 matches against Garbine Muguruza, Aryna Sabalenka and Simona Halep respectively. Their performances are analysed, Su-Wei Hsieh’s post-match interview is praised, and we learn about Aslan Karatsev. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 800Aus Open Day 4 - Kenin conquered, Nadal heckled, Italian aggro

E

After the joy of Wednesday’s atmosphere at Melbourne Park, Day 4 at the Australian Open had a tough act to follow, but it certainly delivered drama. Why was it not surprising that defending champion Sofia Kenin lost? How did Stefanos Tsitsipas find himself in a five set battle with Thanasi Kokkinakis? Should we be talking about Karolina Pliskova as a title contender? Is Jennifer Brady in the mix now? How did Rafael Nadal react to being given the middle finger by a fan? And what on earth was the post-match aggro between Fabio Fognini and Salvatore Caruso all about? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. After an exhilarating opening day at the Australian Open - featuring dominant performance from the leading women’s contenders and culminating in a five-set epic under the lights - Catherine, David and Matt had plenty to discuss on the pod. In what ways did both Shapovalov and Sinner impress in their late night epic? How did Kyrgios respond to Djokovic’s comment that he doesn’t “respect” him off court? Who sent the biggest statement - Halep, Serena or Osaka? Ep 796Aus Open 2021 - Let's Do This!

There have been moments over the last few days, weeks and months when the chances of there even being an Australian Open in 2021 have felt slim. But one of the great feats of organisation has been pulled off, some bullets have been dodged, our fingers remain crossed, and play is set to get underway in a few hours. In this episode we wrap up the results from the six lead-in tournaments. What is Dan Evans’ ranking ceiling after he won his first ATP title? Why has Felix Auger-Aliassime not even won a set in his seven finals? Will Jannik Sinner be physically compromised after his efforts this week? In what way did Ash Barty send a statement to the rest of the tour in her victory over Garbine Muguruza? And is Andrey Rublev in the Australian Open mix? We also discuss the major talking points from the pre tournament press conferences, including what Novak Djokovic thinks of Nick Kyrgios, Iga Swiatek’s honesty about how she’s dealing with being a Grand Slam champion, updates on the fitness of Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep, and some feel-good stories from Francesca Jones. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 795Aus Open - Draw Dissection

After a 24-hour stoppage with everyone holding their breath, tennis returned again in Melbourne with all six Australian Open warm up tournaments now hurtling towards the finish line. In the first half of the show we discuss the possible motivation behind the large number of retirements and walkovers, assess how concerned we are about Simona Halep and Rafael Nadal’s physical state, marvel at Garbine Muguruza’s form, and cover Dan Evans’ run to the semi-final of the Murray River Open. Then, it’s time to break down the Australian Open draws. What makes the bottom half of the women’s draw so mouthwatering? And in what way does the men’s one look more balanced overall? The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Ep 794Tennis stops and fingers cross

A positive covid test from someone who had worked at the Australian Open quarantine hotel appeared to leave the tournament teetering on a cliff edge last night, with hundreds of players and staff forced to isolate again. After 24 hours of mass testing, however, Craig Tiley says the tournament will go ahead as planned. For now. It’s a situation which has served as a reminder of the precariousness of Tennis Australia’s operation to stage the event and in this episode we talk all about it. We also reflect on what we’ve seen so far from the the lead-in tournaments. Who has impressed at the ATP Cup? How is Iga Swiatek adjusting to life as a Grand Slam champion? How do we feel about the latest Nick Kyrgios circus? And what makes Carlos Alcaraz so good? Finally, we respond to some of the feedback we’ve received about our decision to refer to the second stadium court at Melbourne Park as the Evonne Goolagong Arena. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts.
