Bio (from his website): Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). In this video I discuss the symbolic meaning of sacrifice in general, why it’s a human universal and how we still engage with ritualistic sacrifice today. There are many different examples of sacrifice, not only killings, but offering and dedication for initiation into a group, as tribute or taxes, remembering the dead, to found a city or a home etc. Finally I talk about how Christianity solves the problem of sacrifice, in particular the problem of mimetic sacrifice of the scapegoat (René Girard). Fr. Maximos Constas is Professor of Patristics and Orthodox Spirituality at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He is one of the most renowned scholars on St. Maximus the Confessor. He was a professor at Harvard and a monk for many years and is now the director at the Pappas Patristic Institute. I had an interview with Nicholas Kotar and his patron community where we discussed the new graphic novel, God's'Dog, written by me and my brother Matthieu Pageau and illustrated by Cord Nielson. In this episode of the Universal History series, Richard Rohlin and I discuss the tradition of the Nine Worthies. We’ve been talking a lot about sacred history and how these religious patterns manifested themselves in how people understood their own identities. But now we move to a more secular Western Europe, where even here there was still a desire people had to connect their own society, through memory and celebration, to different characters in the past. The Nine Worthies personify the ideals of chivalry, as established in the Middle Ages.
