S1 Ep 46S1E46: Reconciling forest loss with One Million Trees initiative: Green Pulse Ep 46

Green Pulse Ep 46: Reconciling forest loss with One Million Trees initiative 13:33 mins Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change in this podcast series. Last December, parts of a woodland in Kranji were cleared before environmental studies were completed. Investigations are ongoing to determine what happened and why. But the incident has also highlighted the growing affinity between Singaporeans and the green spaces in the country, and generated criticism of whether such deforestation projects defeat the purpose of Singapore’s goal of planting a million more trees over the next decade. In this episode, Minister for National Development Desmond Lee shares his response to this criticism with ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan. They also discuss how his ministry aims to walk the fine line between development and conservation in Singapore.  This podcast contains excerpts of an interview between Mr Lee and ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan (see her interview) last month. They discuss the following points: What the One Million Trees is also an act of stewardship? (3:17) How to determine which green spaces stay, and which must go? (6:22) How science and technology was used to prove the value of the Mandai Mangrove and Mudflat, which will publicly open in mid-2022 (9:10) How the National Development Ministry aims to strike a balance between development and conservation? Health Check Ep 56: How a mother's well-being can have a large impact on her baby 27:39 mins Synopsis: This is a fortnightly podcast series on Wednesdays by The Straits Times that aims to help you make sense of health matters that affect you. In early March 2021, the Ministry of Health announced during the debate on its budget, that it has set up a task force to oversee the development and implementation of a five-year action plan to provide comprehensive support to women and their children, as part of its larger efforts to improve the population's health. In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo hosts Professor Chong Yap Seng, the dean of the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and the executive director of the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. They discuss what more can be done to improve maternal and child health. Prof Chong is also an obstetrician and the lead principal investigator of the Growing Up In Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes or Gusto study, which started in 2009 to study how conditions in pregnancy and early childhood influence the health and development of women and their children here. Green Pulse Ep 44: In hot soup: The fishy business about the fish you eat 15:50 mins Synopsis: The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Some people make it a point to avoid eating shark fin for environmental and ethical reasons. But it turns out that food products containing these threatened species may be more ubiquitous than expected. A new study by researchers from the National University of Singapore and Wildlife Conservation Society has found that many shark and ray products in Singapore are mislabelled. So items labelled “dried fish” or “salted fish” may actually be from shark and ray species facing extinction. S1 Ep 41S1E41: Discussing snubs and shocks at Star Awards and Golden Globes: #PopVultures Ep 41

#PopVultures Ep 41: Discussing snubs and shocks at Star Awards and Golden Globes 27:07 mins Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood industries. This week, the #PopVultures cannot wait to talk about the awards season. After skipping a year due to Covid-19, local broadcaster Mediacorp's Star Awards is back and bigger than ever, with an expanded nominee slate to cover two years of drama series. Hosts Jan Lee and Yeo Sam Jo discuss who was snubbed and who they hope will win. Once again, Sam Jo professes his love for Zoe Tay, while Jan shamelessly thirsts for Pierre Png. Next, they hop over to Hollywood with the Golden Globes. They celebrate the historic nomination of three women in the Best Director category, wonder how the much-trashed Emily In Paris received two nods, and chew over the controversial categorisation of Lee Isaac Chung's Minari (starring Steven Yeun) as a foreign language film. Tune in for all the awards chatter and a delightful dose of pop culture! S1 Ep 54S1E54: Understanding Singapore’s portfolio approach to vaccine procurement: Health Check Ep 54

Health Check Ep 54: Understanding Singapore’s portfolio approach to vaccine procurement 9:42 mins Synopsis: This is a fortnightly podcast series on Wednesdays by The Straits Times that aims to help you make sense of health matters that affect you. This episode looks at how Singapore zeroed in on its choice of Covid-19 vaccines - from those by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna that are based on a relatively new mRNA technology, to Sinovac’s inactivated vaccine, which uses a technology that has been around for decades. It also touches on the speed of vaccine development. ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo hosts Professor Benjamin Seet, deputy group chief executive for education and research at the National Healthcare Group and a member of the expert committee on Covid-19 vaccination. The discuss the following points: How did Singapore decide on traditional and new types of vaccine technologies for the population? (1:03) What are inactivated vaccines and mRNA vaccines? (3:52) Assessing global regulatory approvals and statistics by Singapore's authorities (5:45) Why every death supposedly talked about on social media, is not a direct result of the vaccine, and how science and stats must first be studied carefully (7:40) Produced by: Joyce Teo ([email protected]), Penelope Lee and Ernest Luis Edited by: Penelope Lee Follow Health Check Podcast here and rate us: Channel: https://str.sg/JWaN Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/JWRX Spotify: https://str.sg/JWaQ Google Podcasts: https://str.sg/J6Wv SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: [email protected] Read Joyce Teo's stories: https://str.sg/JbxN --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #healthcheckSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 43S1E43: Future of Singapore’s patchwork forest: Green Pulse Ep 43

Green Pulse Ep 43: Future of Singapore’s patchwork forest 18:51 mins Synopsis: The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Singapore’s forests have come under the spotlight lately, as debates over the fates of the Clementi and Dover forests continue. But these plots are not the first nor last of the country's forests to disappear.  Less than 1 per cent of primary forests now remain in Singapore, mainly in the central nature reserves. Meanwhile, the country continues to lose its secondary forests, with important patches already being cleared to make way for housing in Tengah and more wildlife parks in Mandai, for instance. Development works for the Cross Island MRT line would also see some forested patches being cleared.  In this episode, hear from National University of Singapore biology lecturer N. Sivasothi and ornithologist David Tan on the importance of forest plots all across the island. What do they mean for the country as the world warms and climate changes? And with Singapore’s ambition to transform into a City in Nature, how well would this patchwork of green spaces serve the native animals which also call this island home?
