Show Notes

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died.

The 96-year-old monarch had been ill for some time and under medical supervision, with her family gathering by her bedside at Balmoral.

Elizabeth II was the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, serving as head of state for more than 70 years.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Prince Charles will be titled King Charles III, Clarence House confirms.

The Leader’s joined by royal historian Dr Ed Owens and Evening Standard associate editor Jonathan Prynn.
