E383 – BAE BAE PDX!
Bike Angels Exist, Burn All Evidence! BAE BAE is a mostly-female bike club in Portland, OR. We speak to Holly & Laurel about fun, on-time departures and rain, amongst other things. They describe their group this way: “We are building the bike scene we want to be part of – one that is fun, challenging, and exciting while also being safe and supportive. We tolerate exactly zero sexist bullshit. We are not about speed or competition or snobbery; we are just a bunch of badass people who love bikes and are all about empowering each other, especially with regard to getting butts on bikes.” Calendar URGENT CALL TO ACTION! E382 – Lillian’s Finances & Felines
Lillian Karabaic is a good friend of the show, and has been on many times in the past, but today she brings something new: “purr-sonal” finance! Her new project, Get Your Money Together, aims to knock down the difficulties standing between the average person’s goals of savings and affording the things they need in their lives. She also fills us in on a recent train journey across Europe & Asia, ending in Siberia. Follow Lily’s regularly release personal finance podcast at Oh My Dollar. E381 – Nathan Jones Races Around Earth
Nathan Jones hasn’t been on the show in a while, and that’s because he’s been busy riding 18,000 miles around the planet. This weekend he gave a presentation at Bike Gallery’s Westmoreland location about the whole trip, including passage through monastery-filled eastern Europe, assembling a bike alone at 4am in an Indian airport, viewing a piece of Skylab at a truck stop in Australia, and letting the wind blow him around for a while in America’s heartland. He also discussed Mike Hall’s legacy and how he carried Mike’s bicycle tire pump the entire way. We’re sharing audio from the entire 2 hour presentation here! Thanks to Bike Gallery Westmoreland for hosting this event! Visit their new location at 6717 SE Milwaukie Ave, Portland, OR 97202.

E380 – Robert Rides Recumbent Relentlessly
In the studio today we have Robert Weaver who rode his recumbent bike across the land. He gives us the lowdown on being closer to the ground, and what he learned as he crossed the continent! We’re glad he got in touch on his way to the west coast. E379 – Mooney, & A Four Foot Torch
Tim Mooney of The Pedalshift Project returns to help us light up another episode of the however-many-timers’ club, chat a bit about his upcoming coastal bike tour, and provoke us to maximum jackassery. And apparently he was a child actor?!?! Also: It’s Brock’s last show, and he passes a literal four foot torch to new cohost Guthrie Straw; Guthrie wears a face mask while driving and gets away from the smoke on the coast, Aaron picks up trash with Bae Bae PDX, and Brock has a chicken named after him. E378 – Donnie & Kevin Play In The Dirt
Kevin Prentice has joined us before – he’s one of the geniuses at Ride With GPS, an indispensable tool for planning and having active adventures. He brings his friend Donnie Kolb from oregonbikepacking.com onto the show to talk about adventures in dirt and how to get into some fun trouble in the woods or the desert. Some of you might remember Donnie from the Oregon Outback route or his former project VeloDirt; we’re excited to finally get to meet him. Not mentioned on the show, but a must-see: Donnie Kolb tells his Steens Mountain breakdown story at Live The Revolution 2016. Calendar – Be A Part of It! E377 – Eric Does SLC Thursday Night Ride
Our friend and work travel correspondent Eric Iverson dropped in on the Salt Lake City version of the Thursday Night Ride phenomenon, known locally as The 9.9.9, and caught some great conversation with various participants! He also recaps a visit to the great state of Alaska where he met listener Phil, who notoriously wears a live bear on his back to keep warm. We’re grateful to have a friend who can let us listen in to so many adventures! Send your audio to [email protected] and we will more than likely share it with the world. E376 – Emee & Armando Talk Music on Bikes
Emee has been on the show before, and after a recent conversation we decided to do an episode about what she likes about music on bikes! While we’ve talked about major scale sound systems like our friend PJ’s, how does the average music fan get into a mobile setup? What do you listen to on your rides? And how does one approach the dreaded multi-system cacophony of too many sound systems in one place? Armando, known music-on-bikes fan, crashes the podcast to offer his thoughts as well! And he brought a pizza. Thanks to our generous sponsor The Beer Mongers and our Patreon donors that keep us going! Calendar – Be A Part of It! E375 – Swift Summit 200/100
Trevor Spangle organized a new event in Lebanon, Oregon this year, the Swift Summit 200/100, one that he described as “part brevet, part gran fondo, part self-supported endurance road race.” We host a speed-dating-styled roundup of 7 participants on their experiences with the event, including hills, gravel, climbing, heat exhaustion, vomit, and, of course, successful completion. Many thanks to all of the people who came in to share their stories! This is definitely one to catch next year. E374 – Biketalk 88.1 & Bikabout
Galen Mook & Jess “DJ Hot Mic” are hosts on Cambridge’s BikeTalk 88.1, a live radio show broadcasting every other Wednesday at 8pm EST on FM & web. They’ve been visiting Oregon’s prime locations including Bend, Hood River, & Portland. Small catch: it’s been really smoky here due to some cataclysmic wildfires – they haven’t seen any mountains yet. Enter Bikabout.com: their friends Megan (who’s been on the show before) and Kyle Ramey got out of dodge for awhile to avoid the smoke from the Eagle Creek Fire, and dropped into the studio as well. We catch up with them and find out what’s next for the bicycle travel guide website and the people behind it. (if you missed the BikeTalk 88.1 episodes Brock was on, hear them: in studio on bike fun, and call-in about 2017 Biketown vandalism) Thanks to our generous sponsor The Beer Mongers and our Patreon donors that keep us going! E373 – @graveneutral does the eclipse outback!
Eric Iverson & Ross Putnam rode the famed Oregon Outback route to view the 2017 total eclipse. We love getting audio from peoples’ adventures, and they were kind enough to send voice memos specifically for us while on the trip. They also posted quite a few #trailtips on the @graveneutral Instagram account! So we stitched them into a neat little documentary of their trip for your listening pleasure. Be sure to watch their daily recap videos on Eric’s personal account as well for even more adventure that we didn’t include in this episode. E371 – Brad from Newfoundland
Brad Wade is a cross-country bicycle tourist from Newfoundland, and he is unique in his physiology: his heart is located in a different part of his body than most people’s, and only has one functional lung. That hasn’t stopped him from adventuring! We chat with him near the end of his trip about his experiences, health, food access, and (of course) his gear. Aaron Green, author of We Were Like Sons and founder of The Regrainery, joined us in this conversation. The organization coordinates the concerns of their members & those of their surrounding community with direct actions that make needs evident – like blocking a lane of traffic with hay bales to emphasise the need for fewer lanes on a busy street where people have been hurt or killed. What’s the best response to adversity? Absurdity. Check in with them to get involved, or how you can spark your own activism & advocacy in your own area. E366 – Ridealong: The Rice Cooker Ride with Team Japan, October 2016
Back in 2016 in the fall, Team Japan came to Portland to participate in the Disaster Relief Trials. Their ringleader Tad, a professor from a university in Japan, organized the Rice Cooker Ride with the help of DRT organizer Mike Cobb, and they demonstrated a resilient method for preparing simple food during a potential disaster scenario, a traditional wood-burning stove used to prepare rice that they easily transported by bicycle. Brock & Aaron attended the ride and caught some audio from the event, including an interview that local television station KATU used to create a story about the ride on the evening news. There was also a body cam compilation made of scenes from the ride! We were grateful for the chance to meet Team Japan, and look forward to seeing them again someday soon!
E365 – DBR Does TABR!
David Barstow Robinson (known better to his friends as DBR) completed another long distance endurance bicycle race you might have heard of – 2017’s Trans-Am Bike Race, an unsupported cross-continent contest of strength and persistence you might remember from our interview with Nathan Jones or the documentary Inspired To Ride. We ask him about his experiences, statistics, strategies, and emotional ups and downs. Why’s it such a long episode? ‘Cause he rode across the country! E360 – Bryce & Bean Can Take The Heat
Bryce & Bean are relatively new transplants to Portland, but they’re probably taking the summer temperatures better than we are. Living in Tucson, Arizona gave them plenty of experience in beating the heat and riding bikes in it. Bryce works for Velo Cult as one of their shop staff after having a “come to bicycles” moment, and Bean spent a lot of time in a bakery with the cool bike kids of the Southwest. We talk about life there and here, and what’s next for the two of them. Also: Brock did the WNBR, and Aaron did not, no buts about it. Aaron built 2 bikes in one day. E348 – Cat Goes For A Joyride
Cat Caparello radically changed her life through the Girl Eats Bike project, losing weight and leaning into a bicycling experience whether the world was ready for her to or not. Now, she covers women in bicycling experiences, encouraging everyone to jump in and try it out; don’t wait for permission or for the imaging to change in the industry! She hosts the Joyride Podcast which shares inspiring stories and conversation from interesting women involved in bicycling (including a show she just did with our best friend Aqua!), and you really should check it out. Also Brock’s brother-in-law Phil is in town, and gives a short update on the nor’easter that just hit Boston. E347b Ridealong: Chariot Wars 2017
photo credit: Jon Dutch A little bonus content – the Mini Bike Winter 2017 Chariot Wars! We sent field correspondent Karah out to talk to people and get some audio of the glorious rage that comprises the event loved by many, feared by some, and even reviled by a few. But most folks come out on the other side loving and respecting their friends even more. Beating the shit out of your comrades has a strange bonding effect. The Sprocket Podcast does not condone or endorse unpermitted or illegal activities of any kind. You, as a grown adult, must navigate the labyrinthine web of life choices yourself.
E347 – SPRING BREAK
Brock & Aaron spent some time traveling! Brock went to New Mexico and didn’t ride a bike. Aaron went to Hawaii and rode a bike! We talk about the trips and some thoughts on bicycling in Hawaii (and abroad in general), and the relative merits of standby travel. E346b – LIVE announcement of the Oregon Timber Trail at Base Camp Brewing
Harry Dalgaard & Gabriel Amadeus present the first public announcement, explanation, and question/answer session of the Oregon Timber Trail, a new public route allowing people to cross the state of Oregon from south to north (or vice versa, weather conditions depending) by mountain bike or a number of other methods. We were there and caught it on tape! Thanks to Base Camp Brewing for hosting the event, filling its walls with perhaps more beards and cycling caps than ever!
E346 – Guthrie & Steph Fill In: Gabe & The Timber Trail
Filling in for Brock and Aaron are Guthrie and Steph for this episode! Gabe Amadeus (of Limberlost) has been working hard for the past 18 months on one of Oregon’s most exciting biking routes: The Timber Trail. Stretching the length of Oregon, this trail represents the mountain biking equivalent of the P.C.T, in which cyclists can find challenges on four different sections of pristinely remote dirt, gravel, and singletrack. We catch up to Gabe to chat about his involvement with the project, and where the Timber Trail goes from here. E345 – Megan Ramey from Bikabout
Megan Ramey had a vision to simplify the good trip. Why fret over car rentals, unfamiliar expressways with angry drivers, and spend half of your time dreading the drives to come when you could explore cities the way they are best experienced – by bike? She and her family have been living the dream for some time, guiding others into relaxing, human-scaled city tours with their travel guides, and getting there in style on Amtrak. We get the skinny on Bikabout. Thanks to our generous sponsor The Beer Mongers and our Patreon donors that keep us going! E344 – Ride With GPS, and with Kevin & Zack!
Ride With GPS is a fantastic tool for bicycle riders, designed by bicycle riders who code. Kevin & Zack join us to explain how their new Ride Report function can provide expert, local opinions on the rides you have wanted to take, but weren’t sure if you should. Their Ambassador program has been connecting people with information, too! We are also joined by a bottle of whiskey, a mystery bag, and a hell of a lot of laughter. Enjoy!
