Good morning. South Dakota. I'm Aaron Jolly.
Folks, winter is throwing a tantrum today. A cold front is carving through the state right now. And it's bringing the full menu: fog, rain, freezing rain. And snow.
Eastern South Dakota woke up to dense fog and rain. Sioux Falls hits 49 degrees this morning, then temperatures nosedive to 34 by afternoon as the front barrels through. Rain switches to freezing rain around 8 P.M. — slick roads guaranteed. Snow takes over by midnight. Here comes a glaze of ice and less than an inch of snow before it clears out Saturday morning.
Central South Dakota sees snow developing around noon. Pierre tops out at 37 degrees before the cold air crashes in. Snow likely through this evening with up to an inch of accumulation. Winds gust to 30 miles an hour out of the north — the kind that finds every gap in your jacket.
Western South Dakota already woke up to snow. Rapid City reaches 42 degrees, but wind chills drop to 19 around 10 A.M. With north winds gusting to 41 miles an hour. That's the kind of cold that bites. Snow tapers off by afternoon with minimal accumulation.
Tonight's lows are brutal across the board. Eastern areas drop to 26 degrees. Central South Dakota falls to 23. Western regions see 25.
Here's the good news. Saturday brings sunshine and a massive warm-up. Highs climb into the mid 40s east, mid 50s central. And near 60 out west. Sunday is even better — 63 in Sioux Falls, 69 in Pierre. And 71 in Rapid City. That's 25 to 30 degrees above normal. Monday stays mild with highs in the 50s before another system arrives Monday night into Tuesday with rain and snow chances. Wednesday clears out with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Thursday warms back into the upper 50s.
Roads will be slippery tonight. Take it slow if you're heading out.
See you tomorrow.
