The Constitution allows for only gold and silver to pay debts (Article I, Section 10). Then-candidate Donald Trump promised to eliminate the national debt in 8 years, but so far, he has added to it nearly $ 8 trillion in just 3.5 years, and is set to add much more. Balanced Budget Acts are proposed by certain people thinking they will hold the government accountable but within the BBA, there are provisions that allow for unlimited spending if a majority of the states say they want it, and they've already demonstrated they are more than willing to take the government cheese.
