↓ Episode 134 – It’s Time to Winterize Your RV, Lets Do It Now!
This is Eric Stark with The Smart RV’er Podcast, Delivering the smarts you need to enjoy the freedom of the RV Lifestyle without the fear of breaking down! Enjoying the RV Life: Today, Alexis and I will talk about something crucial for all you RV enthusiasts out there: winterizing your RV. Winter can be tough on your RV, and it's not just about protecting the freshwater system. There are other aspects to consider to ensure your RV stays in great shape during those cold months. Inspect the Seals and Roof: Check all the seals around windows, doors, and roof vents. Ensure they are intact and not cracked or damaged. Replace any seals showing wear and tear to prevent drafts and moisture from getting inside. Clean and Store Your RV Thoroughly: Give your RV a good cleaning, both inside and out. This will help prevent dirt and grime from causing damage during the winter months. Once it's clean, find a secure storage location for your RV if possible, away from the elements. Tire Care: Maintain proper tire pressure and consider using tire covers to protect them from the cold. Cold weather can cause tires to lose pressure, and keeping them properly inflated will prevent damage. Also, occasionally move your RV to avoid flat spots on the tires. Propane Tanks: Shut off the propane supply and make sure all appliances are off. If you're storing your RV for an extended period, it's a good idea to remove the propane tanks and store them in a safe place. Battery Maintenance: If you're not using a trickle charger or solar panels to keep your RV's battery charged, it's essential to remove the battery and store it in a warm, dry place. Cold temperatures can damage batteries. Interior Preparations: Empty out all perishable items from your refrigerator and pantry. Leave the refrigerator and freezer doors open to prevent mold and odors. Also, open all cabinet doors to promote air circulation and prevent moisture buildup. Water System: Drain your water tanks, water heater, and all water lines. You can use RV antifreeze to flush the water lines thoroughly to prevent freezing. Don't forget to drain and clean the black and gray water tanks too. Heating System: If you have an onboard heating system, make sure it's in good working condition. It'll help keep the inside of your RV from freezing during the winter. Rodent Control: Seal any openings or gaps where critters could enter your RV. Mice and other pests love to seek shelter in warm places during the winter. Regular Check-Ins: Even if your RV is in storage, it's a good idea to check on it periodically. Ensure that everything is in order and that there are no unexpected issues. Winterizing your RV properly can save you a lot of headaches and repair costs down the road. Remember, it's not just about protecting your plumbing; it's about preserving your entire RV for many more adventures to come. So, take the time to prepare your RV for winter, and you'll be all set to hit the road again when the weather warms up. Thanks for tuning in, and happy RVing! Staying On The Road: In this segment, Eric delves deep into the crucial process of winterizing an RV's freshwater system. He meticulously outlines the two predominant methods employed for this task: using compressed air to blow out the system and safeguarding it with RV antifreeze. Eric underscores the significance of winterizing an RV, particularly in regions prone to freezing temperatures, to shield the vital freshwater system from potential damage due to freezing. The hosts share their experiences of needing to find a place to spend the night while on the road and emphasize the importance of feeling safe and secure in these locations. They mention that some options for free camping include Walmart parking lots (although not all Walmarts offer this), restaurant parking lots, hotel parking lots, and truck stops. They highlight the need to ask for permission before staying overnight and to be considerate by keeping the area clean and not causing any disturbances. The hosts also mention Cracker Barrel locations as potential options for RVers, as some are known to be friendly towards allowing overnight parking. They advise finding well-lit areas and taking precautions for security, such as having exterior lights and surveillance cameras. They conclude the episode by encouraging listeners to share their own RV-friendly locations with others through RV clubs and forums, as everyone is constantly looking for safe and convenient places to stay during their travels. He emphasizes the importance of eventually cleaning up and organizing everything to avoid confusion and ensure easy access to tools and supplies. He then shifts the focus to RVs and explains why it's necessary to clean out unnecessary items regularly. Eric shares examples of frustrating situations when disorganization hampers the process of finding essential items like a jack during a roadside emergency. He then emphasizes the benefits of keeping belongings organized, which makes tasks easier and prevents frustration. He also mentions the importance of maintaining organization when visiting service departments or dealerships to ensure the safekeeping of personal items. Eric concludes by suggesting thoroughly cleaning the RV at the beginning and end of each season to avoid accumulating unnecessary items and clutter. The Next Stop: Glamping, short for glamorous camping, is a popular trend that combines the experience of camping with luxury and comfort. It involves staying in unique and often upscale accommodations in outdoor settings. Glamping sites can be found in various locations, and they offer a range of options such as fancy tents, cabins, Conestoga wagons, and even converted structures like yurts or treehouses. Glamping provides a more comfortable and convenient camping experience compared to traditional camping. Instead of pitching a tent and sleeping on the ground, glamping accommodations often feature amenities like real beds, heating, air conditioning, and sometimes even en-suite bathrooms. This allows people to enjoy the beauty of nature without sacrificing comfort. There are several platforms, such as Glamping Hub, where you can find a wide selection of glamping spots. These websites provide information about different locations, amenities, and availability, making it easier for people to explore and book their glamping experiences. The appeal of glamping lies in the opportunity to have a unique and memorable getaway. It offers a change of pace and a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life while still enjoying the comforts of modern living. Glamping can be a great option for those who want to experience nature without roughing it out completely. The best time to go glamping depends on the location and the type of accommodation you choose. Many glamping sites offer amenities like air conditioning and heating, allowing guests to enjoy the experience year-round. Some people prefer glamping during pleasant weather conditions, such as spring or fall, to fully enjoy outdoor activities and the surrounding scenery. Glamping can also be a more cost-effective option when done with friends or a group, as the larger accommodations can be shared, splitting the cost among the participants. Overall, glamping offers a luxurious and unique way to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you stumble upon a glamping site in your travels or actively seek one out, it can be an exciting and enjoyable experience for those looking to add a touch of glamour to their camping adventures.RV Envy: Camco is a company that offers a line of products called "Life is Better at the Campsite," which includes various items designed for RV and camping enthusiasts. ↓ Episode 119 – How to Test and Diagnose an RV Wall Thermostat
This is Eric Stark with The Smart RVer Podcast Delivering the smarts you need to enjoy the freedom of the RV Lifestyle without the fear of breaking down! Living the RV Life: For many people, the appeal of full-time RVing is the freedom to travel wherever they want, whenever they want. However, that doesn't mean that living on the open road is free. In fact, one of the most important keys to successful full-time RVing is learning how to create and stick to a budget. One of the best ways to save money as a full-time RVer is to camp at inexpensive or free campsites whenever possible. There are a number of websites and apps that can help you find cheap or free campsites in your area. In addition, many state and national parks offer discounts for senior citizens, military personnel, and other groups. Another great way to save money is to cook your meals at home rather than eat out all the time. Not only will this save you money, but it will also allow you to eat healthier food. Full-time RVers also often take advantage of membership discounts at stores like Sam's Club and Costco. By taking the time to plan ahead and budget carefully, it is possible to live the dream of full-time RVing without breaking the bank. Staying On The Road: It's cold outside, and your RV Furnace is not coming on with the T Stat. No matter how often you switch it on and off, it doesn’t come on. You need to keep your RV warm or risk your water lines freezing. What do you do? You can call a technician if one is available. You can you take your RV to a service center if possible? Or you can diagnose the problem yourself and save the day. Eric walks The Smart RVers through how to test Thermostats! The Next Stop: Eric and Alexis talk about how White Sands National Park is a stunning natural wonder located in the state of New Mexico in the southwestern region of the United States. It was designated as a national park in December 2019, making it the newest national park in the United States. Smart RVers will want to check this place out! The park covers an area of 224 square miles (580 square kilometers) and is known for its unique landscape of white sand dunes that cover an area of around 275 square miles (710 square kilometers). These dunes are made up of gypsum crystals and are among the largest gypsum dune fields in the world. The park is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species, many of which are adapted to the harsh desert environment. Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, picnicking, and camping. The park is also a popular destination for stargazing and offers visitors a chance to view the night sky in all its glory. Overall, White Sands National Park is a unique and awe-inspiring destination that showcases the natural beauty and diversity of the American Southwest. Alexis and Eric recommend you take a trip here as soon as possible. RV Envy: Eric talks about how to upgrade to a better furnace!
