Ep 3232 - Giles Lewis, TDC Val-d'Isere

E

Welcome to Episode 32 of The Ski Instructor Podcast and the one that will take us past 45,000 downloads of the pod. Every now and then I look at the blog stats and I'm amazed by how many people are listening to this podcast. This week I have an interview with Giles Lewis of The Development Centre (TDC) in Val-d'Isere. Giles is also a member of the BASI National Education Team. We had a great chat on various topics but the real gem in this one is the moguls talk and there are some real nuggets in this interview about bumps skiing and why it is so rewarding. You'll also find out my guilty secret this winter amongst other things. You can see Giles at work here in the BASI Level 4 technical standards videos: https://www.basi.org.uk/BASI/Courses/Alpine/Tech_standards/Alpine_technical_standards.aspx?WebsiteKey=211cffca-c436-4a06-844e-527af5a19586 You can contact Giles at www.tdcski.com Happy listening Dave Burrows SnowPros Ski School [email protected] https://www.snow-pros.ski/lessons music by www.bensound.com

Ep 1919 - Danny Miller M. Ost, Msc - The Fear Avoidance Model

E

Welcome to episode 19 of The Ski Instructor Podcast. This episode is a bit of a departure from normal in that I'm not interviewing a skier. However, there is lots of ski related chat in the pod and lots of content that relates to and is applicable to skiing. My conversation this week is with Danny Miller who is a qualified Osteopath and who is halfway through a doctorate in Health Psychology. This episode flowed out of a late night conversation that I had with Danny after a very enjoyable round of golf in Portugal. We discussed the concept of The Fear Avoidance Model and how knowledge of this could benefit the young skiers that we work with. We were due to roll out this as a presentation to groups of young sportsmen and women in various International Schools in our region but corona put paid to that so we decided to make a podcast out of it. What follows is a long conversation about various topics but the main one being how better we can manage injury when it happens to us through a better mindset. Ep 1616 - Dr Jim Taylor, US Ski Team and World Cup psychologist

E

Hello Welcome to episode 16 from a snowy (finally) alps. It's been a very weird winter here, lots of early snow and then nothing for the whole of January, followed by a wet and windy February. Compounding that is Coronavirus cancellations all over the place in March. As a welcome diversion, I had a lovely conversation with Dr Jim Taylor who joined me via skype on a stormy night in my office. There were some connection problems on the line so you might notice some echo on my voice and some cut off answers from Dr Jim. We had a chat including visualisation and things instructors can do to help clients from a psychological perspective, amongst other things. Ep 1414 - Simon Butler, SBSki

E

This week I travelled to Megeve to speak to Simon Butler. Simon has just won a very significant court battle with the French state over the right for ski instructors at all levels to work in France. This series of court cases stemmed from Simon's arrest on the slopes of Megeve in 2013. He also went to court with the British Association of Snowsports Instructors in 2017 which we discuss in part 2. In this episode I wanted Simon to have a chance to tell his side of the story and get it on the record completely, without any spin or soundbites that we see in other media and social networks. I present this to you, the listener, with as minimal comment or opinion from me as I was able to do. Below I link to Simon's business SB Ski as well as the link to the contact details of Jean-Yves Lapeyrere as mentioned. You can contact Jean-Yves if you wish you follow the declaration process irrespective of if Brexit applies to you or not. Thank you for listening this year and I wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2020, as well as lots of powder and bluebird days in the ski season. Ep 1211 - Jonathan Ballou, Aspen Ski School, PSIA

E

Welcome to episode 11 from the very snowy Swiss Alps. You might have heard that there has been some very serious snowfall already in the southern alps with resorts like Saas Fee, Cervinia and Zermatt getting absolutely hosed in the last week. It's snowy here also in the Western end of the alps and the temperatures are cold. Hopefully this means a good and early start to the season. This week I have a short interview with Jon Ballou, the Boss of The Aspen Ski School. That's the title I hear in my head anyway but actually, his full title is Managing Director, Ski and Snowboard Schools, Aspen Skiing Company. You can find out more about what that all means when you listen to the episode. We talk about managing such a large operation, teaching trends and a bit of tech. No podcast with Jon would be complete without a bit of chat about the movie Aspen Extreme too. You can find Jon on facebook as Jonathan Ballou or on his youtube channel of the same name. https://www.facebook.com/jonathan.ballou.7 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Ko-b6WfmZWWxyi6rj14hg I hope you enjoy the episode, see you on the next one. Jaz is the Director of BASS (British Alpine Ski School) in Morzine as well as the Director of the BASI (British Association of Ski Instructors) National Education Team. Jaz talks at length about his history in skiing, BASI's involvement in the upcoming Interski Congress in Bulgaria, ski instructors and business and much more. We also chatted about ski pole length. These are the amazing Komperdell poles that I use; https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B014D18IXC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B014D18IXC&linkCode=as2&tag=davesnowpros-21&linkId=8f9729560e44adc702eaa94fca6f5bbf I think Jaz gave a great interview and was a super interesting guy to talk to. Ep 21 - Phil Smith, Snoworks

E

In this, the very first episode of The Ski Instructor podcast, I interview Phil Smith who was here in Champery/Les Crosets for the Welsh Championships. Phil and I talked on a wide variety of topics, the old wild west days of early British ski instructors in France, cultural differences as well as Phil's own unique spin on open and close learning environments. You can find out more about Phil in the links below. I've got more great interviews coming up and I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did recording it.
