Fresh off the Spaceship: The Story of the Black Constellation
bonusWhat is the Black Constellation? If you know, you'll want to listen to this podcast. If you don't, you'll want to listen, too. "Fresh off the Spaceship" is the newest podcast from KEXP, telling the story of the highly influential yet scarcely documented artist collective. The Black Constellation has included such varied musical acts as Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Ya Tseen and Porter Ray. Hosted by KEXP's Larry Mizell Jr. and Martin Douglas, each episode in this 10-part series takes listeners on an audio journey connecting the stars of the Constellation, shedding light on their art and their ethos along the way. New episodes come out every Friday from March 18 - May 27, 2022. Find out more at KEXP.org/fresh-off-the-spaceship. Live on KEXP with Japanese Breakfast
bonusToday, we bring you an episode of KEXP's Live on KEXP podcast featuring an exclusive session with Japanese Breakfast. There are many negative ways one could sum up 2021 but one shining bright positive title we can give it is "The Year of Michelle Zauner." The Oregon-born artist is probably best known as Japanese Breakfast and released the stellar album Jubilee this June but is also now an acclaimed author with the release of the New York Times bestseller Crying in H Mart in April. For this episode of Live on KEXP we share a clip of Zauner’s conversation with Cheryl Waters about how writing the book exorcised the pain and trauma so that she could portray the joy felt on Jubilee. Zauner then plays four tracks from Jubilee plus one from her side project with Crying’s Ryan Galloway, BUMPER. Recorded June 21, 2021. Songs performed: Kokomo, IN Tactics Be Sweet Savage Good Boy Ballad O Watch the full Live on KEXP session on YouTube For a new KEXP session delivered to your feed every week, including recent favorites like Bachelor, José González, Arlo Parks, Yu Su, and Little Simz, subscribe to Live on KEXP wherever you listen to podcasts.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For this New Year’s mix, Reverend Dollars brings the club to you. In her words, "For this podcast, I wanted to create a mix more reflective of the sets I would play at clubs and parties than what I do on the radio. Obviously, those kinds of spaces have been short on existence this year, but I really miss those type of environments. I've been able to do the occasional party mix here and there for livestream events, but it's not the same and I long for the community that exists around these gatherings of music and dance. I also want to place a focus on the brilliant sounds that Black electronic producers have been creating in 2020, even in this party void. Welcome to the new year, hopefully better than the last!” 1. Ep 749The Weekly Mix, Vol. 749 - Hidmo Means Home
On December 1st, 2006, Rahwa and Asmeret Habte took over Hidmo on 20th & Jackson. In a very short amount of time, Hidmo became known as a community center cleverly disguised as an Eritrean restaurant in Seattle's Central District, and a mecca for Seattle hip-hop. The space Rahwa and Asmeret helped create along with their family and friends became a safe space for youth in the neighborhood, an organizing hub for a large amount of community organizations in the city, and an all-ages venue for musicians who had very few venues accessible to them. Hidmo brought together community in a way that very few venues in our city ever have, and what happened those 4 years on 20th & Jackson can still be felt throughout our community, and the world today. Rahwa tragically passed away earlier this year, and in honor of her legacy and the legacy of what she helped build, we brought together a playlist of some of her favorite artists who have graced the hut, along with personal memories shared from the artists themselves, including Blue Scholars, THEEsatisfaction, Khingz, JusMoni, Hollis, Shabazz Palaces, Meklit, Invincible, Dakota Camacho, Beyond Reality, Siren's Echo, One Be Lo and more. 1.
