The Trudeau government has committed $61 million to build a road to service a growing network of mines in the Arctic. The company at the head of the mining effort, MMG, is one of the largest controlled by the Chinese government. The road would cut through heart of the range of the Bathurst caribou heard, which has already suffered tremendous losses in population in part blamed on heavy mining. In the mid-80's the herd numbered nearly 500,000. By last year it was down to 8,200 - A 98% decline in one generation.
