The plateau is that moment when results stop and frustration ensues. You feel like you're doing all the right things, but still have symptoms, or can't lose weight, or your energy is in the pots. S1 Ep 25EP 25: The Three Keys to Taking Control of Your Health and Life

How do you heal yourself--increase your energy, decrease inflammation and stress and reverse disease? By being proactive and taking control of you. On this week's episode I dive into the three keys that are absolutely necessary to truly take control of your health and life! If you’ve arrived at this podcast episode, chances are you’re like many of the other women I’ve worked with when it comes to your health. You are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or even hopeless. You have been searching for answers or a solution, but always coming up short. You may be resigned to always having symptoms or that this is just how life is always going to be. And you are starving for motivation. You are starving to be listened to and understood. You are starving for a plan and a solution. And you are starving for hope and the ability to dare to start dreaming. Seven years ago, I found myself in this same place. I was a seemingly healthy 28 year old chiropractor, who had already been on my own healing journey recovering from asthma, allergies and eczema and a life long dependence on medication. I’d reached a point where I was active, medication free and full of life. But at 28 I got another wake up call that told me I was still missing something when it came to my own health. I was a woman who had had a baby 5 weeks too early, and no one could tell me why. I was a woman who spent my sons first week of life in NICU fighting to finally go home. I was a woman who could not lose weight, who had no energy, no sex drive, no motivation, and no answers. What ensued was a seven year transformational process in which I figured out the steps to truly heal my body, get myself back and heal on a deep level, both physically and emotionally. I equate the journey to rediscovering my health to learning how to fly a plane...except unlike the women I now work with, I didn’t take a course, have an instructor or a book. Instead I spent years spinning my wheels putting all of that information together on my own. Now, I’ve been able to take that process and turn it into a blueprint that has helped hundreds of other women take control of their own health and lives. There are three keys to really finding lasting and sustainable success when it comes to healing without drugs or surgery: A holistic approach-must move away from the compartmentalized thinking of western health care Addressing the 6 Pillars of Health--stress/hormones, nutrition/detox, movement, sleep, gut health and immune function, mindset & mindfulness A guide/Mentor What’s on the other side of being able to put this process into practice is nothing short of amazing. The other side is what have women find results like... Tripling their energy Losing 30 pounds and getting off all their medication Becoming confident and strong Having less anxiety and better mood stability Getting pregnant after years of failed fertility treatment Decreasing inflammation and stress Healing from adrenal fatigue Down four pant sizes in six weeks When you start on the journey to taking control of your health and life you rediscover dreams and find a quality of life you didn’t think was possible before. S1 Ep 24EP 24: How to Handle Picky Eaters Whether it’s Your Kids, Your Spouse or YOU!

This conversation comes up all the time in my work with women: You don't want to cook two meals but are trying to be healthy; you want to lose weight, but don't like vegetables; your spouse or kids are constantly fighting you on changes and it's overwhelming. This conversation is for YOU. It’s not that vegetables, whole grains or healthy foods taste bad, it’s that you’ve trained your taste buds to think they taste bad. And you have to have patience retraining taste buds to appreciate good food. Nutrition is that which is eaten to sustain life, provide energy and promote the growth and repair of tissues. Most of us live to eat, we do not eat to live. I got a new protein shake recently with absolutely no added sugar that I was excited to test as an option for my Health Rejuvenation Program. I couldn’t wait to try it. I made my shake and immediately thought “bleh”. It tasted bland and I had to choke it down. I realized what a huge difference the one gram of sugar in my current protein powder made, and made me realize I’d have to ease myself into appreciating the new shake. It’s kind of like running a marathon. You don’t decide you’re going to run a marathon and then just go do it with no training or preparation. You have a plan. You gradually increase your mileage and prepare your body to go for the long haul. By the same token, you have to gradually ease your body into eating (and liking) new and healthier foods. Some key things to know and try when making transitions with picky eaters: If healthy eating is new , mix the new healthier food with the previous unhealthy food in increasing amounts until you’re getting 100% of the healthy option. This is the approach I am using with my new protein powder. I’ve also seen this work for parents getting kids off of dairy and gluten (when their kids favorite meal is macaroni and cheese), making the move from why to whole grains, and moving from many processed foods to the real thing. We have to retrain our taste buds (which tend to recognize the heavily processed food as “normal”) to recognize and enjoy the real food! Smoothies are a great place to “hide” things like spinach or kale to get some raw veggies in them. Don’t make two meals. Dinner is dinner. Lunch is lunch. Do your best to include something the picky eater does like that’s on the healthy spectrum. Encourage them to branch out and try new things at least once or twice a week. Approach changes gradually and with patience. The day my 7 year old told me he loved raw kale and asked for seconds and then thirds, I nearly fell out of my chair. The more you encourage, emulate, include and incorporate the picky eaters into the process, the more you’ll find breakthroughs. Don’t try to completely rock the boat all at once. Just start making small changes and the rest will follow. Everyone should be on a quality whole food multivitamin, but ESPECIALLY picky eaters. For guidance on this see my video on what supplements you should be taking. Be wary of using food as a reward. This perpetuates the brain cascade reward system into identifying taste and treats with certain emotions. Instead use things like quality time, a favorite game or activity, an outing etc. When you start to approach healthy eating, getting your vegetables in and making better food choices like running a marathon, you will find you start to really enjoy healthy food. You’ll even start to crave vegetables and whole grains. And, you’ll have less bloating, inflammation and far more energy, all of which make the choices easier to make. S1 Ep 23EP 23- How to Kick Your Sugar Habit to the Curb

On this episode I tackle the ever present sugar addiction so many of us struggle with. This goes beyond just having a sweet tooth! Join me as I share the three keys to really breaking the sugar craving cycle and kicking the habit once and for all. How do you finally kick your sugar habit? It’s about awareness and commitment. I want to give you some facts to think about: The Average American consumes 152 pounds of sugar each year compared to 22 pounds a year in 1900… Sugar is connected to obesity… It’s also heavily connected to the insulin resistance and sluggish livers we see in 60% of the US population It increases inflammation, rates and severity of disease and ultimately makes us sick. And it can be really difficult to reduce or completely eliminate from our diet The first time I decided to go off sugar I was 17. What I considered “a strange hippy doctor” told me I’d feel better if I did. So I decided to try it. Two days in I was explaining that I was going to get off sugar to a friend, and as soon as I was done, they offered me a sugar covered donut bite from Dominos with glazed icing dip. Which I ate without giving two thoughts until it was in my mouth. I had no idea how deep the sugar addiction ran, or how present it was in my diet until I stopped to think about it. I felt like a hypocrite and failure, and realized that if I was going to actually be successful in doing this, I needed to wake up and pay attention. It was lonely, people thought I was weird, But I found I did start to feel better when I’d gotten off sugar a while. I also found it was really easy to get back on it. I equate it somewhat to a high level olympic athlete. If they are going to succeed they have to be meticulous in how they care for the body and train. They have to be patient. And they have to do the work. We don’t all have to be Olympic athletes, but when we approach our own health as an Olympic athlete would approach their training regime, we make progress much more quickly and see results we probably never expected. I’ve spent the better part of the last 16 years eating very little refined sugar. And I want to share with you the three things you really need to know and consider if you’re serious about kicking your sugar habit to the curb. Sugar is a highly addictive substance. Studies have shown it has a similar reward effect on your brain to alcohol or drugs. Because of this, getting off it can be challenging. You will have cravings, and maybe even withdrawal symptoms. Sugar doesn’t just apply to candy, chocolate or ice cream. There are sugars hidden in ALL of our food. And nutrition labeling can be very misleading. On top of that which is added to our foods, our most popular foods like white potatoes, rice, pasta and other simple carbohydrates break down to sugar in your body. They give a quick spike in your blood sugar and then you crash, or are hungry again. Truly getting past the sugar habit takes diligence, patience and grace for yourself (and others). It’s not going to happen overnight, just like getting to the Olympics doesn’t happen overnight. When I was finally able to get off sugar for longterm (6 years) when I was 20, and again 2 years ago, I discovered that I felt amazing. I had stable energy through my day. I wasn’t as hungry, especially at night, and I lost weight and slept better. When you’re able to really successfully transition your diet, your palate and your eating habits, amazing things wait for you on the other side. I also recognize that it can be daunting, lonely and difficult to find the motivation to take your health in your own hands, and deprive yourself of something you’re literally emotionally attached to. On this episode I take you on a journey to cultivate mental fortitude and position yourself for growth during social distancing and the world pandemic, so that you come out of it transformed into an even more powerful version of yourself. I cover: ~What the spending trends right now tell us about the world mindset ~Tools for helping you overcome those mindset blocks ~Granting yourself permission to feel, and acknowledge those feelings ~Questions to ask yourself: what are you trying to escape (feelings, the situation, things out of your control)? Today I break down goal setting for women, taking a very different approach from the SMART goal rhetoric that permeates goal setting conversations these days. Today we combine the idea of DUMB goals, as thought up by Brandon Burchard, with my SLIM Goal feminine approach. This is not the goal setting you're used to. DUMB Goals stand for Dream, Uplifting, Methods and Behaviors. As Brandon explains in his video on DUMB goals, they help you get connected to a big dream and purpose before you start getting down to the methods and behaviors you need to cultivate to get to that dream. Taking this a step further, I lay out my SLIM goal acronym for goal setting: Sustainable Life-giving Intentional Mindful When we are able to approach our goals from both dreams and intentions, methods and sustainability, the world becomes our oyster and those dreams become attainable.
