Ep 72Collaborative Design Projects - with Kristy Lea

E

Kristy Lea visits the pod again, and this time we dig into what it takes to run and participate in collaborative design projects. We discuss the differences in doing free block projects for strategic email list growth, and patterns for sale projects - and Kristy and I have collaborated on both kinds in the past couple of years. There’s a lot of organization to get them up and running, and Kristy reminds us that the customer service lift can be pretty heavy at the outset. But we both agree that enthusiastic customers - especially the ones that write sweet emails - are worth the efforts!Show Notes Kristy Lea - Quiet Play Designs - https://quietplaydesigns.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/quietplay/ @quietplayBack to Nature QAL - https://www.leilagardunia.com/back-to-nature-paper-piecing-quilt-alongAngie at Gnome Angel - https://www.gnomeangel.com/Leila Gardunia - https://www.leilagardunia.com/Frightful Fun Block of the Month - https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/frightful-fun-block-of-the-month/EQ8 - https://electricquilt.com/online-shop/category/electric-quilt-8-eq8/?srsltid=AfmBOop3VMc-cG6ufCKyB9t62HcAb4n1Afq-upsp_f9SvwSVhc-oOSD8Adobe Illustrator - https://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.htmlWinter Wonderland - https://quietplaydesigns.com/pages/winter-wonderland-signup?srsltid=AfmBOop_wVwb7XtABRH_MkMQyplDdyLK8XavqRzKF4XfcSQpfngjwPPVNicole of Sew Much Moore - https://www.sewmuchmoore.com/Leslie of Seasoned Homemaker - https://www.seasonedhomemaker.comMake Mine Mini - https://quietplaydesigns.com/products/make-mine-mini-fpp-membershipFrightful Fun BOM Podcast - https://www.revcraftbiz.com/p/the-frightful-fun-block-of-the-monthHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Big Quilt Shows - Exhibiting, Lecturing, and Teaching - with Daisy Aschehoug

# 071 - Daisy Aschehoug returns the the podcast to talk about working for the big quilt shows, and the wide variations in compensation they offer. As you well know, my biggest concern is always to challenge any model that relies on the underpaid labor of women for its success. There are so many levers to pull in terms of paying people well (or at least fairly), and we talk about the pros and cons of some of the decisions both we and a venue can make. They can also be profitable in terms of exposure - which we all know is my least favorite currency! It’s a great discussion that covers a lot - including making sure your contracts cover shipping (with tariffs) correctly.Show NotesWebsite - https://warmfolk.com/en-usInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/warmfolk/?hl=en @warmfolkFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/warmfolkHeather Black - https://quiltachusetts.com/Heather and Daisy’s book - Quilt Modern Curves & Bold Stripes: 15 Dynamic Projects for All Skill Levels - https://amzn.to/3KWpsXTStudio Art Quilt Associate - SAQA - https://www.saqa.com/Global Quilt Connection - https://www.globalquiltconnection.com/Mary Lou Weidman - https://www.marylouweidman.com/index.phpQuiltCon - https://www.quiltcon.com/homeHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. To AI or Not - with Holly Marsh

#069 - Holly MarshMy friend and fellow biz owner and artist Holly Marsh returns to the podcast for a great discussion about using AI.There is no doubt that AI is here to stay, but how much of it is actually useful or time-saving in YOUR business. And given the planetary resource costs of keeping data centers running, not to mention the time to train AI to understand what you want, is it worth it for you.We both agree that there are a few things that might be worth it - for instance, writing SOPs (standard operating procedures and the like). But what do you do if you want to preserve your writing voice? And how can you make sure it’s giving you good information? (Hint: you can’t… you still need to think critically and do your own research). It’s a great discussion. We don’t necessarily reach an easy yes or no solution, but we came up with plenty of things to consider.Show NotesInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/hollymarshmallow/ @hollymarshmallowEcommerce Arcade - https://ecommercearcade.com/Illustration Business - https://hollymarshmallow.com/Fine Art Supply in Astoria - https://fineartsupplyastoria.com/Shopify - https://www.shopify.com/There’s a Reason Women Aren’t Swooning over AI Like Men are: How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. From Doubt to 2000 Students - with Andi Barney

Episode 066It was great having Andi Barney on the pod to talk about turning her passion for vintage machines into one of the most unique businesses in our industry, that of teaching people sewing machine maintenance. Not only does she teach people how to take care of their own, but she now runs a program to train people as machine techs - something we’ll always need as long as we’re sewing! Our conversation also got into the changing needs of the sewing public. While there are many of us taught to sew either in school or by our grandmothers - and in formal ways to make clothes, quilts, and other household items, Andi is seeing a huge trend of younger sewists interested in defeating fast fashion through making their own quality clothing, and lots of recycling and upcycling what we already have to keep it going longer.Show NotesWebsite - https://www.andibarney.com/Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@SewingDocAcademyFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/asbarneyTed Lasso - ‎Watch Ted Lasso - Show - Apple TV+‎Apple TV+https://tv.apple.com › show › ted-lassoVintage Elna Grasshopper - https://elnagrasshopper.wordpress.com/2011/12/25/an-introduction-to-a-grasshopper-part-1/Janome Jem Gold - https://www.janome.com/product/jem-gold-660/Libby Lehman - https://thequiltshow.com/quiltipedia/who-is-libby-lehmanInnova - https://innovalongarm.com/Necchi - https://www.mynecchi.com/Sewing Doc Academy - https://www.sewingdocacademy.com/Portland Modern Quilt Guild - https://portlandmodernquiltguild.com/The Powermind System: Twelve Lessons on the Psychology of Success by Michael Monroe Kiefer - https://amzn.to/48w6e4z *Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Cheerleading People's Creative Expression - with Heather Givans

Episode 065Heather Givans runs Crimson Tate, a quilt store, but it’s really a supportive community that lives inside a building. Heather brings her former high school art teacher and camp counsellor chops to the community she serves at the store. Heather is a life-long learner and I love her endless curiosity about things (listen to the pod to hear about how studying languages led her to teaching art in a roundabout way). When she talks about all the things she’s gotten herself into (and out of!) there is such an undercurrent of joy in how she approaches things, and I find it so infectious. It shows up in her fabric design, and honestly, in every hug and laugh I’ve ever shared with her. The Balance of Passion and Business - With Libs Elliott

Episode 064Libs and I fired up this conversation a few weeks before we hung out in person at the European Patchwork Meeting in September. She was just finishing up the work that she exhibited (what a WOW show) and we talked a lot about managing the balance between the art we make for the soul, and art we make for the biz. I can tell you that after hanging out in person for a week, I’ve added Libs to my list of fave peeps in the biz. She is thoughtful and generous, and really cares about taking care of the community she has created (the Sew Squad!). I enjoy her perspectives on things (see also our bonus recording with Daisy Aschehoug from EPM!) and honestly can’t wait to have another good gab with her… right after we both hit some deadlines!Show NotesWebsite - https://libselliott.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/libselliottYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/libselliottFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/libselliottPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/libselliottSneaky Dee’s Bar in Toronto, Canada - https://www.sneakydees.com/Cliff’s PDX - https://www.cliffspdx.com/Lib’s Textile Tour in Japan - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/trips-to-kyotoNancy McDonough - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/who-we-areSew Squad - https://sewsquad.libselliott.com/European Patchwork Meeting - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/Luke Haynes - https://www.luke.art/Zak Foster - https://www.zakfoster.com/Productive Flourishing - Start Finishing - https://www.productiveflourishing.com/p/start-finishingTeam Habits - https://www.productiveflourishing.com/p/team-habitsHeidi Parkes - https://www.heidiparkes.com/Tara Faughnan - https://tarafaughnan.com/QuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-homeSoak Wash - https://soakwash.com/Jacqueline Sava - https://soakwash.com/blogs/soak-stories/soak-story-1Andover Fabrics - https://www.andoverfabrics.com/Libs Fabric Collections - https://www.andoverfabrics.com/SingleDesignerNew.php?Designer=Libs%20ElliottTula Pink - https://www.tulapink.com/Alison Glass - https://alisonglass.com/Juki TL-18 QVP - https://jukiquilting.com/products/haruka-tl-18qvp.htmlPfaff Passport - https://www.singer.com/products/pfaff-passport-2-0-sewing-machine?srsltid=AfmBOopr79ehdR__jUhybwXPK_qaO2AoyDcwS4nR6crultIls32aHa9A&variant=47703999086871Pfaff expressions - https://www.singer.com/collections/all-pfaff-machines?srsltid=AfmBOopCnN1nVb7VdJN0s-TvVPtt9N2kp29_Xq_TzT3QtF_vQw3P6QQFDaisy Ashehoug - https://daisyaschehoug.com/How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Choosing the Rules to Follow - with Chawne Kimber

Episode 063It was SO great to sit down with Chawne Kimber and talk about her quilts. I was a huge fan of her work before I met her, and through the years of our friendship, my appreciation for both her and the work she makes has only deepened. Much of her work has a deep intentionality in the materials and their origin, and Chawne integrates that with the meaning of the pieces. She’s also got the best sense of humor and play too, and I love it when she lets that loose. Our convo covers a lot of her thoughts about making. She talks about rules - the ones that make sense to follow (like those that create integrity in construction) and those that should be heartily ignored. She speaks of having a machine set up with a small pile of fabric next to it to just sit and doodle - and by doodle she means sew the small pieces to just see what happens. Nothing like my process, but I’m planning to try the similar doodling (tho perhaps with other media) to just see what happens. Getting a peek into another’s artistic process is such a treat, and a privilege too. I really hope you enjoy this one.Show Notes:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cauchycomplete/?hl=enQuilting for Dummies - https://amzn.to/3HA5EHUTonya Ricucci - http://lazygalquilting.blogspot.com/Word Play Quilts - https://amzn.to/4fA8AkmBonnie Hunter’s Blog - https://quiltville.blogspot.com/Cotton Sophisticate, 2015 (I’m Just a Sophisticated Cotton Picker) - https://www.internationalquiltmuseum.org/quilt/20210500002The One for Eric - https://www.saqa.com/art/browse-collection/one-eric-gSamantha Hoyt - https://www.agatheringofstitches.com/Gather Here - https://gatherhereonline.com/QuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-homeTara Faughnan - https://tarafaughnan.com/Slow Poetry #1 - https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/slow-poetry-1-120751Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California - https://bampfa.org/event/exhibition-tour-routed-west-twentieth-century-african-american-quilts-californiaOf Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South - Curated by Dr. Sharbreon Plummer - https://www.msmuseumart.org/exhibition/of-salt-spirit/Unconventional & Unexpected By Roderick Kiracofe - https://www.quiltfolk.com/product/unconventional-unexpected/Tracey Emin - https://www.instagram.com/traceyeminstudio/?hl=en*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Always Learning and Experiencing - with Latifah Saafir

I first met Latifah as she helmed the Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild about 15 years ago, and it’s been an honor to remain connected over the years, and to see her business and statute in the industry develop. We talk about how being a traveling educator gave her an inside look at so many quilts shops, and how that information formed her pattern + ruler/template strategy. Latifah used her background in engineering to create the Clammy™ and HuRTy™ rulers and the patterns that use them.We talk about choosing when and where to grow a business, and also when and where to scale back as circumstances demand (Latifah cared for her elderly grandfather until he passed), a tango of experimentation and refinement as circumstances dictate or allow. Finally, we talk about the importance of speaking up for each other within our industry, making safe spaces for our colleagues that have historically not been safe, and creating broader communities that are inviting and inclusive.Show NotesWebsite - https://www.latifahsaafirstudios.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/latifahsaafirstudios/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/latifahsaafirstudiosYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@LatifahSaafirStudiosLos Angeles Modern Quilt Guild - https://lamqg.org/Jacquie Gering - https://www.jacquiegering.com/Alissa Haight Carlton - https://www.alissahaightcarlton.com/The Modern Quilt Guild - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/homeThe Clammy™ - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/clammy-patternsGlam Clam Quilt - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/pdf-patterns/products/glam-clam-quilt-pdfJaybird Quilts - https://www.jaybirdquilts.com/HuRTy™ Rulers - https://shop.latifahsaafirstudios.com/collections/the-hurtyQuilt Market - https://www.quilts.com/quilt-market/Janome M7 - https://www.janome.com/product/continental-m7-professional/Carolyn Friedlander - https://carolynfriedlander.com/Giucy Giuce - https://www.giucygiuce.com/Ruby Star Society - https://www.rubystarsociety.com/Sarah Watts - https://www.sarahwatts.com/Rashida Coleman-Hale - https://www.rashidacolemanhale.com/Linear by Rashida Coleman-Hale - rashida coleman hale linear*Atomic Habits by James Clear - https://amzn.to/47fypUEPine Meadows Ranch - https://roundhousefoundation.org/pine-meadow-ranch/Allie of Exhausted Octopus - https://exhaustedoctopus.com/Michelle Wilkie - https://www.mlwilkie.com/ National Quilt Museum - https://quiltmuseum.org/*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Stitching Your Feminism - with Stephanie Rohr

Stephanie Rohr first crossed my radar a few years ago, when a NY Times article detailed that her first book, Feminist Cross Stitch, got pulled from Michaels for having profanity in its pages. I immediately bought the book (solidarity!) and thought what a cool woman, I hope to meet her some day!Well friends, that day happened and it was such a great convo. We talk about both the support and reactions to her books (the second one has lovely messages of self care - and a relatively equal ratio of cuss words, all supported by her publisher)We talk about the political aspects of stitching, but also the practical, financial, accessible, and ergonomic aspects of it too. Being in any creative field that calls upon your body demands that you figure out how to do it without hurting yourself!Stephanie’s theater background has inspired and informed some of the words she stitches, but stitching was also a way to busy her hands while calming her mind in theater productions and rehearsals. BONUS EP: At the European Patchwork Meeting with Libs Elliott and Daisy Aschehoug

I recently attended the Carrefour European Patchwork Meeting (EPM) in Alsace, France. I shared lodging with Daisy Aschehoug and Libs Elliott, both veteran attendees and exhibitors.Libs was on the jury for the show, and was also exhibiting an all new solo show, a series of quilts made with generative code. I got to help hang that show and it was magnificent. One evening, I put the microphone in the middle of our table, and we poured some wine, turned on the mic, and just had a chat. We covered artistic process, new and old ideas in quilting, the eternal tension of derivation vs inspiration, and remembering to turn on the camera occasionally!I hope you enjoy a peek behind the scenes!Show Notes:European Patchwork Meeting - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/Daisy Aschehoug - https://warmfolk.com/en-usLibs Elliott - https://libselliott.com/Libs’ exhibition - Tara Miller - https://quiltdistrict.com/Cath Hall - https://wombatquilts.com/Radha Weaver - Sewing Through Fog - https://www.sewingthroughfog.com/Shin-hee Chin - https://shinheechin.com/Libs Elliott generative code quilts - https://libselliott.com/pages/gallery?srsltid=AfmBOoqjY1sPDl3oH4GgB-b_2bayDHPXlr4fDQUZBi6hKuf_lBGEU9c9Rose City Originals - Chris Marchini - https://rosecityoriginals.com/Dianne Firth - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/artistes/dianne-firth-2/Luke Haynes - https://www.luke.art/How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Embracing Tradition - with Tara Faughnan

#060: Tara Faughnan takes us on her quilting journey, through fabric design and a passion for traditional quilting blocks. She was recently the keynote speaker at QuiltCon 2025, and the attendees got to see her exploration of her maximalist traditional quilts in a lovely solo exhibition. Tara talks about finding the rhythm in her color palettes, which I find to be very distinctive! We talked about collaborative processes, and Tara says that while she collaborated a lot when she was designing textiles, she doesn’t look for collaboration when designing her quilts. We talk about how she researched the data she presented in her keynote about how poorly represented women in in museums, fine arts, galleries, and collections, and that despite occasionally thinking she should be come a painter to garner more art-world respect, she always returns to the women-driven lineage of quilting - and how much she values being part of that lineage. She talks more about all the feels around creating that keynote, but I’ll let you give it a listening her own words rather than my cliff-notes!She also talks about figuring out the right things to do, industry-wise, that make money, and appeals to us to stop working for free (motion seconded!)Show NotesWebsite - https://tarafaughnan.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tarafaughnanFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/people/Tara-Faughnan-Quilts/100083173158162/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDinczHJgfzjlV4vqG-3c1A/featuredQuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-homeTara’s Exhibit at Quiltcon 2025: https://youtu.be/3w8v9M6d-EEMichael Miller - https://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/Hoffman Fabrics - https://hoffmancaliforniafabrics.net/Block Studies - https://tarafaughnan.com/pages/block-studies?srsltid=AfmBOop12ymWIjP4_mJ9gRrJGMZ__TpDPESA9s9tUtPQ0YnvV5vAIGSSClos Mirabel Retreat - https://tarafaughnan.com/products/clos-mirabel-depositOther Upcoming Events - https://tarafaughnan.com/pages/upcoming-eventsClos Mirabel - https://clos-mirabel.com/Daisy Aschehoug - https://daisyaschehoug.com & https://warmfolk.comSheila Frampton Cooper - https://www.zoombaby.com/Embroidered Journey - https://embroideredjourney.com/How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Authentically Attracting Your People - With Samantha Hoyt

#059 - Samantha Hoyt was a joy to talk to - two Sams collide to talk about all the things, and let me tell you, we discovered we have a lot in common. Sam is past the point of being anything other than authentically who she is (which is passionate about sewing, taking care of the planet, and a lot of other big hearted things), and as it turns out, that’s what brings people back to her sewing retreats year after year. She is very much a maker, and makes a lot of her own clothes. She is intimately aware of the cost of fast fashion, especially the hidden costs to environment and to the people making the garments. She’s an advocate of us all to do better about keeping clothes out of the landfill.Show NotesA Gathering of Stitches - https://www.agatheringofstitches.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/agatheringofstitches/?hl=enBernina 550 - https://www.bernina.com/en-US/Machines-US/Series-Overview/BERNINA-5-Series/BERNINA-550-QE*Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay: https://amzn.to/40pz8yB*Worn - A People’s History of Clothing by Sofi Thanhauser: https://amzn.to/4kJYaQ6*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Navigating the Gatekeeping - with Karlee Porter

#058 - Karlee Porter is a life-long artist, always going in her own direction. So it makes sense that when she turned to quilting, especially long-arm quilting, she took to doing it her way - and teaches other to follow their own inspiration too.We talked about important industry things - like pricing according to the complexity of the pattern, and how to navigate (and not participate in) the gatekeeping that plagues most craft industries. She also talked about creating her company Honest Fabric with very deliberate environmental considerations at the forefront, and a structure for paying its artist partners a very close second.Show NotesWebsite: https://www.karleeporter.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karleeporterdesignFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/karleeporterquiltsGraffiti Quilting Masterclass - https://www.karleeporter.com/shop/education/graffiti-quilting-master-class/Holly Anne Knight - https://www.stringandstory.com/Shimmering Symphony - https://www.karleeporter.com/shop/digital-designs/printablequiltpatterns/shimmering-symphony-pattern-pdf/Carol Bryer Fallert-Gentry - https://bryerpatch.com/Karen McTavish - https://www.mctavishquilting.com/Machines documentary - https://www.amazon.com/Machines-Rahul-Jain/dp/B0769ZG321Carolina Moore - https://www.carolinamoore.com/Oeko-tex certification - https://www.oeko-tex.com/en/our-standards/oeko-tex-standard-100Graffiti Quilting Book - https://www.karleeporter.com/shop/books/graffiti-quilting-a-simple-guide-to-complex-designs/Honest Fabrics - https://www.honestfabric.com/The Foundation - ‎Watch Foundation - Apple TV+‎Apple TV+https://tv.apple.com › show › foundationBaby Lock Longarm Quilting machines - https://babylock.com/machines/longarm-quiltingAlison Glass - https://alisonglass.com/Guicy Guice - https://alisonglass.com/Libs Elliott - https://libselliott.com/*Digital Muse: Bringing AI Into Your Creative Process - https://amzn.to/3Gfm8op*Joseph Albers Interaction of Color - https://amzn.to/3GfmaN3*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication.
