Ep 72Collaborative Design Projects - with Kristy Lea
EKristy Lea visits the pod again, and this time we dig into what it takes to run and participate in collaborative design projects. We discuss the differences in doing free block projects for strategic email list growth, and patterns for sale projects - and Kristy and I have collaborated on both kinds in the past couple of years. There’s a lot of organization to get them up and running, and Kristy reminds us that the customer service lift can be pretty heavy at the outset. But we both agree that enthusiastic customers - especially the ones that write sweet emails - are worth the efforts!Show Notes Kristy Lea - Quiet Play Designs - https://quietplaydesigns.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/quietplay/ @quietplayBack to Nature QAL - https://www.leilagardunia.com/back-to-nature-paper-piecing-quilt-alongAngie at Gnome Angel - https://www.gnomeangel.com/Leila Gardunia - https://www.leilagardunia.com/Frightful Fun Block of the Month - https://huntersdesignstudio.com/product/frightful-fun-block-of-the-month/EQ8 - https://electricquilt.com/online-shop/category/electric-quilt-8-eq8/?srsltid=AfmBOop3VMc-cG6ufCKyB9t62HcAb4n1Afq-upsp_f9SvwSVhc-oOSD8Adobe Illustrator - https://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.htmlWinter Wonderland - https://quietplaydesigns.com/pages/winter-wonderland-signup?srsltid=AfmBOop_wVwb7XtABRH_MkMQyplDdyLK8XavqRzKF4XfcSQpfngjwPPVNicole of Sew Much Moore - https://www.sewmuchmoore.com/Leslie of Seasoned Homemaker - https://www.seasonedhomemaker.comMake Mine Mini - https://quietplaydesigns.com/products/make-mine-mini-fpp-membershipFrightful Fun BOM Podcast - https://www.revcraftbiz.com/p/the-frightful-fun-block-of-the-monthHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Big Quilt Shows - Exhibiting, Lecturing, and Teaching - with Daisy Aschehoug
# 071 - Daisy Aschehoug returns the the podcast to talk about working for the big quilt shows, and the wide variations in compensation they offer. As you well know, my biggest concern is always to challenge any model that relies on the underpaid labor of women for its success. There are so many levers to pull in terms of paying people well (or at least fairly), and we talk about the pros and cons of some of the decisions both we and a venue can make. They can also be profitable in terms of exposure - which we all know is my least favorite currency! It’s a great discussion that covers a lot - including making sure your contracts cover shipping (with tariffs) correctly.Show NotesWebsite - https://warmfolk.com/en-usInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/warmfolk/?hl=en @warmfolkFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/warmfolkHeather Black - https://quiltachusetts.com/Heather and Daisy’s book - Quilt Modern Curves & Bold Stripes: 15 Dynamic Projects for All Skill Levels - https://amzn.to/3KWpsXTStudio Art Quilt Associate - SAQA - https://www.saqa.com/Global Quilt Connection - https://www.globalquiltconnection.com/Mary Lou Weidman - https://www.marylouweidman.com/index.phpQuiltCon - https://www.quiltcon.com/homeHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. What does this mean for industry professionals? Strategy! Maddie and I discuss how to spend your money wisely to get the best out of going to one of these events.Show Notes Bad Ass Quilter - https://www.badassquilterssociety.com/Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/BadAssQuiltersCommunityInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/the_badass_quilter/ @the_badass_quilterH&H Americas - https://hh-americas.com/Houston Quilt Show - https://www.quilts.com/Kim Kight - https://www.instagram.com/kmelkight/?hl=enTrue Up - https://www.trueup.net/QuiltCon - https://www.quiltcon.com/homeCherrywood Fabrics - https://cherrywoodfabrics.com/2026 Cherywood Fabric challenge - https://cherrywoodfabrics.com/pages/storytime-cherrywood-challengeProductive Flourishing - Robert Kaufman - https://www.robertkaufman.com/Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Kevin_BaconHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. To AI or Not - with Holly Marsh
#069 - Holly MarshMy friend and fellow biz owner and artist Holly Marsh returns to the podcast for a great discussion about using AI.There is no doubt that AI is here to stay, but how much of it is actually useful or time-saving in YOUR business. And given the planetary resource costs of keeping data centers running, not to mention the time to train AI to understand what you want, is it worth it for you.We both agree that there are a few things that might be worth it - for instance, writing SOPs (standard operating procedures and the like). But what do you do if you want to preserve your writing voice? And how can you make sure it’s giving you good information? (Hint: you can’t… you still need to think critically and do your own research). It’s a great discussion. We don’t necessarily reach an easy yes or no solution, but we came up with plenty of things to consider.Show NotesInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/hollymarshmallow/ @hollymarshmallowEcommerce Arcade - https://ecommercearcade.com/Illustration Business - https://hollymarshmallow.com/Fine Art Supply in Astoria - https://fineartsupplyastoria.com/Shopify - https://www.shopify.com/There’s a Reason Women Aren’t Swooning over AI Like Men are: How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. #067: Lindsie Bergevin joins us to talk about the Quilter’s Planner, and how it’s changed over the years based on both customer feedback and the ever-changing manufacturing landscape. We discuss how important good design is, and that it’s not always obvious because good design just really works. We also talk about the difficulties of being charge of all the aspects of your business, and how self care - especially good sleep is critical to keeping up with all the tasksShow NotesQuiltCon - https://www.quiltcon.com/homeWebsite - https://lindsiebergevin.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/lindsiebergevinstudios/?hl=enQuilter’s Planner - https://forcreatives.pub/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thequiltersplanner/Elizabeth Hartman - https://elizabethhartman.com/Fancy Forest - https://elizabethhartman.com/pages/fancy-forestFlyaway quilt pattern - https://www.heatherjonesstudio.com/fly-away/Crio Bru - https://criobru.com/We’ll post the videos from Halloween here by the end of the year:https://www.youtube.com/@adventureswithskyandiJuki TL-2010 - https://www.jukihome.com/products/sewing/tl-2010q.htmlFeatherweight - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singer_FeatherweightThe Freelance Mum book https://www.amazon.com/Freelance-Mum-Annie-Ridout/dp/0008352593Clever Fox Weekly Planner - https://cleverfoxplanner.com/How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. From Doubt to 2000 Students - with Andi Barney
Episode 066It was great having Andi Barney on the pod to talk about turning her passion for vintage machines into one of the most unique businesses in our industry, that of teaching people sewing machine maintenance. Not only does she teach people how to take care of their own, but she now runs a program to train people as machine techs - something we’ll always need as long as we’re sewing! Our conversation also got into the changing needs of the sewing public. While there are many of us taught to sew either in school or by our grandmothers - and in formal ways to make clothes, quilts, and other household items, Andi is seeing a huge trend of younger sewists interested in defeating fast fashion through making their own quality clothing, and lots of recycling and upcycling what we already have to keep it going longer.Show NotesWebsite - https://www.andibarney.com/Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@SewingDocAcademyFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/asbarneyTed Lasso - Watch Ted Lasso - Show - Apple TV+Apple TV+https://tv.apple.com › show › ted-lassoVintage Elna Grasshopper - https://elnagrasshopper.wordpress.com/2011/12/25/an-introduction-to-a-grasshopper-part-1/Janome Jem Gold - https://www.janome.com/product/jem-gold-660/Libby Lehman - https://thequiltshow.com/quiltipedia/who-is-libby-lehmanInnova - https://innovalongarm.com/Necchi - https://www.mynecchi.com/Sewing Doc Academy - https://www.sewingdocacademy.com/Portland Modern Quilt Guild - https://portlandmodernquiltguild.com/The Powermind System: Twelve Lessons on the Psychology of Success by Michael Monroe Kiefer - https://amzn.to/48w6e4z *Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay moreHow to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Cheerleading People's Creative Expression - with Heather Givans
Episode 065Heather Givans runs Crimson Tate, a quilt store, but it’s really a supportive community that lives inside a building. Heather brings her former high school art teacher and camp counsellor chops to the community she serves at the store. Heather is a life-long learner and I love her endless curiosity about things (listen to the pod to hear about how studying languages led her to teaching art in a roundabout way). When she talks about all the things she’s gotten herself into (and out of!) there is such an undercurrent of joy in how she approaches things, and I find it so infectious. It shows up in her fabric design, and honestly, in every hug and laugh I’ve ever shared with her.
