Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first citizen of the United States to be canonized as a saint. In her short life (41 years), she overcame losses that would have crushed many people. Her wealthy family suffered financial reverses. Her husband died of tuberculosis. Her conversion to Catholicism cost her many friends. Later she would suffer through the deaths of two of her five children. Through all of her losses, she never took her eyes off of her Lord and Savior. She exulted in the fact that He chose her to teach His children in the school she set up in Emmetsburg, Maryland. Truly, she is a model for all Christians, but especially women and teachers.
