Darth Powell Says No Rate Cuts Coming (5/4/23)

(5/4/23) Not only did Fed Chair Jerome "Darth" Powell hike interest rates to 5%, he also essentially said no rates cuts are forthcoming in this galaxy. The "terminal rate" that's been anticipated has been achieved, and markets' hopes are pinned on the chance the Fed will now pause in its rate hikes. The Fed didn't say that in so many words, but Powell alluded that there is sufficient restrictive policy in place, combined with tighter bank lending stanards, to cause a drag on the economy and inflation. Powell did say in particular no conditions exist for the Fed to start cutting rates, which was a disappointment to markets that have been pricing-in 180-bp in rate cuts by the first half of 2024.
