In 1972, a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters inside the Watergate complex sparked one of the biggest political scandals in American history—the Watergate scandal. The official story says Richard Nixon and his administration orchestrated the burglary and then tried to cover it up, ultimately forcing him to resign.
