Riddled With Syphilis: The Other Epidemic Currently Affecting Aussies

While the whole world is focused on defeating COVID-19, it seems Aussies have become complacent when it comes to protecting ourselves against other diseases, which has led to a series of recent Syphilis outbreaks in Melbourne. But this isn't the only sexually transmitted infection that is on the rise in both our cities and regional areas. The Quicky speaks to two experts, and a mother who only found out she had an STI when she became pregnant, to find out why so many of us are being infected and often don't realise it until many years later when the damage has already been done. Is It Time To End Beauty Pageants?

Like many countries, Australia has a long history of beauty pageants, where young, single, child-free women have been celebrated for their physical attributes and charity work. But do these kinds of competitions where mostly tall, white women parade around in their swimwear still have a place in 2021? The Quicky speaks to the current Miss Universe Australia, and an expert in gender studies to consider whether it's time to put down the crown and turn our back on this arguably outdated means of praising women. Why Is Everyone Freaking Out About The Curriculum?

The entire Australian school curriculum is currently under review, with the intention of scaling back humanities subjects, increasing focus on problem solving, and reflecting a more honest account of the invasion story of our First Nations People. Maternal Ambivalence: When Women Regret Having Kids

It's no secret that if you're a woman aged in your 20's, 30's or 40's, you can expect to be asked on almost a daily basis whether or not you have, or want to have children. For some, this will open a happy conversation about the joys of parenthood, but for many others it's the start of a far more difficult and defensive discussion about why not, and sometimes even why wish we hadn't become a mother. Are AVOs Worth The Paper They're Written On?

Kobi Shepherdson, Kelly Wilkinson, Hannah Clarke and her three kids - these are just some of the many women and children who should have been protected from violent ex-partners and fathers by an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) but weren't. Australia is facing a watershed moment as millions of women and girls are standing up and demanding to be heard, because we are tired of hiding the truth of what is done to us on a daily basis, and tired of protecting the perpetrators.  For the first time, this episode ofThe Quicky is for the men in your life to let them know just how common women and girls are being harassed and assaulted not just in private, but even in broad daylight. This is what men need to hear, and what men need to understand about what they can and should be doing to make every space, public or private, a safe one for all women and girls. Did Fetishising Asian Women Lead To A Mass Shooting?

Last week eight innocent people were shot dead in Atlanta, six of whom were women from Asian backgrounds, allegedly killed by a young white man.  Local police were keen to shut down any suggestions that the attack was racially motivated, but many Asian people say this is just another example of systemic racism that has accelerated during the pandemic. The Quicky investigates whether hideous stereotypes may have led to this assault, and how a long history of crude assumptions and misconceptions about Asian women continues to cause serious harm. The Boys Club: Can You Beat Them, Or Do You Have To Join Them?

We've been hearing the term 'boys club' bandied around a fair bit surrounding the culture in Canberra... but what does it actually look like? Is it all leather couches and cigar smoking, or is it more about a culture that leaves mostly middle age white men making all the decisions with little input from others? The Quicky speaks to two female politicians and a female publisher who have experienced the 'boys club' on a daily basis to find out how we can move past it, and include everyone at the table. Is OnlyFans A Legitimate Career Opportunity?

Making money as an influencer is now a widely-accepted and legitimate business for a lot of people, but many of us are a little more hesitant when it comes to embracing those who make money on OnlyFans.
