Ep 45Hugo Tagholm: The Oceana Activist
Sir David Attenborough once said, “An understanding of the natural world is a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.”And so, surely it is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create, nurture and maintain a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth? So why, here in the UK, is a deluge of untreated sewage being dumped by water companies into our rivers and along our coastlines?Last year alone, there were a whopping 372,533 sewage spills, over a period of 2.7 million hours. This is one of the BIGGEST environmental scandals of our time. Yet, as is always the case, it doesn't have to be this way. This is why today we are joining forces with Hugo Tagholm to bring to you a deep dive into the world of marine conservation and critique the scandals we're witnessing on our shorelines.Hugo served as Chief Exec of Surfers Against Sewage, one of the UK’s leading marine conservation and campaigning charities that have been instrumental in campaigning for the introduction and enforcement of legislation that protects our seas from pollution. He also led partnerships at The Climate Coalition, and joined forces with Richard Haward’s Oysters and the Good Law Project, with the aim of compelling the Government to rewrite its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan to impose much tighter deadlines on water companies to clean up their act.Tagholm has also served as Programme Director at Theirworld and is an esteemed TEDx speaker, columnist for Oceanographic Magazine, and avid surfer.Earlier this year, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science for his services to marine conservation by the University of Exeter and has recently become the Exec Director and Vice President at Oceana, the largest international advocacy organisation dedicated solely to ocean conservation. The crux of this wonderful conversation focuses on the majesty of our oceans, the tragedy of their decline and the urgency of change.Chatting with Hugo was an absolute pleasure and my hope is that this one inspires you into your own form of action and activism —because we can't change the world without changing ourselves. As always, the podcast is available on Apple, Acast, Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts. So here it is - me and the Oceana Activist, Hugo Tagholm.Enjoy ✌️🌿🌎 Hosted on Acast. Ep 44Esnatt Gondwe-Matekesa: GiveDirectly
In his book, The End of Poverty, Jeffrey Sachs made some careful estimates as to what it would cost to end extreme poverty in the world in about 20 years. Sachs calculated that the total cost per year would be about $175 billion. This represented less than one percent of the combined income of the richest countries in the world. In fact, this cost is 0.7% of the total income of the 30 countries who comprised OECD in 2005. Fast forward to 2022, an estimated 698 million people, or 9% of the global population, are living in extreme poverty, with the overwhelming majority living on less than $1.90 a day. By 2030, 167 million children will live in extreme poverty if the world doesn’t act. This is where my guest today comes in. Esnatt Gondwe-Matekesa is a Development Practitioner at GiveDirectly. GiveDirectly is a non-profit that lets donors, like you, send money directly to the world’s poorest households.Since 2009, they've delivered $580M+ in cash directly into the hands of over 1.37 million people living in poverty and currently have operations in DRC, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, USA, & Yemen.During today's conversation we explore the work of GiveDirectly, Foreign aid, tax, governance and what the future holds.I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Esnatt - please enjoy what I think you will find to be a truly fascinating, potentially life-altering conversation.🔗 CONNECT WITH ESNATT: 💻 Website: https://www.givedirectly.org👥 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/esnatt-gondwe-matekesa-351aa3146/Useful Links:https://www.interaction.org/blog/the-top-9-causes-of-global-poverty/https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Goal-1.pdfhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/57362816https://www.bond.org.uk/news/2022/03/the-impact-of-the-uk-aid-cuts-on-ngos/https://www.devex.com/news/tracking-the-uk-s-controversial-aid-cuts-99883https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-30/uk-predicts-up-to-170-billion-excess-profits-for-energy-firmshttps://www.ft.com/content/a14162d0-0f65-4c63-842e-e0778516d03a?sharetype=blockedhttps://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/poverty-and-shared-prosperity Hosted on Acast. Ep 35Tony's Chocolonely
In today’s episode, we chat with the awesome Ben Greensmith aka Lord Chocolonely the Third, the UK and Ireland Country Manager for Tony’s Chocolonely. Tony's Chocolonely dates back to 2003 when Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken learned of widespread modern slavery and illegal child labour across cocoa farms in West Africa. What makes Van de Keuken's findings even more remarkable was that some of the world's leading chocolate manufacturers had signed the Harkin-Engel Protocol agreeing to the eradication of slavery and child labour from their supply chains just two years prior.Where the voluntary protocol failed, Tony decided to do something about it. Demanding that a local judge convict him of supporting child slavery because, by paying for chocolate, he was supporting the exploitation of minors. When the case was dismissed, he tried to change the industry from within to show there's a way to be a successful chocolate manufacturer that doesn't involve the exploitation of West African communities and that's exactly what they’ve been doing ever since. From Tony's humble ‘lonely’ beginnings, Tony's Chocolonely has grown into a global brand, available in all 50 states of the US, the UK, and across Europe, as well as becoming the largest chocolate manufacturer in the Netherlands. With revenue in excess of €100 million, Tony’s shows no signs of slowing up, with the recent acquisition of Belgium chocolate manufacturer Althaea-De Laet international to the construction of a new factory and visitors centre north of Amsterdam. All indicate a period of exciting growth to come for a firm crazy about chocolate and serious about people.During this fantastic episode, we focus on:A background to Ben, Tony's amazing journey and why they do the work they do today.Cocoa as the heart of many economies in West Africa, especially in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana where more than two million farmers produce nearly 70 percent of the world's cocoa. The Harkin-Engel ProtocolThe challenges of the chocolate industry having a child labour rate of 46.5% and how by proactively looking for child labour means you can look to fix the root cause of the problem i.e., poverty at the earliest point of the cocoa supply chain is the key driver of child labour.Farmgate Price & Tonys PremiumPartnerships, Tony's FAIR, The Chocolonely Foundation and Bitter Chocolate Stories together withKey thoughts and takeaways.🔗 CONNECT WITH BEN: 💻 Website: https://tonyschocolonely.com/uk/en👥 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bengreensmithlordchocolonelyiii/ 📚 RESOURCES MENTIONED: 💡 https://www.channel4.com/programmes/cadbury-exposed-dispatches💡 https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80146284💡 https://tonyschocolonely.com/nl/en/join-in/the-chocolate-case Hosted on Acast. Ep 31Nick Jonsson: Executive Loneliness – The Unspoken Isolation
Nick Jonsson is the co-founder and managing director of the Singapore branch of EGN (Executives’ Global Network) and dedicated to raising awareness and eliminating the stigma around the phenomenon of executive loneliness. He has identified that feelings of isolation and depression—personal struggles that he, himself, has had to grapple with and conquer—are much more widespread than we think.Work cultures often encourage executives to project success and achievement when, in fact, thousands actually suffer in silence and denial of their unspoken isolation. Guy Schanschieff MBE, went from being an accountant in training at KPMG to travelling the world with his wife Jo, where a chance meeting in India, would result in the pair returning to the UK in the early 90s, to co-found the multi-million pound business Bambino Mio we see today. Ep 21Kathryn Hymes: The 'Great Resignation’ Misses the Point
In today’s episode we chat to the wonderful Kathryn Hymes. Kathryn is a computational linguist, co-founder of Thorny Games, and a writer whose work on language, technology, and music has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times and more recently Wired. On November 1st 2021, Kathryn wrote an article entitled, the ‘Great Resignation’ Misses the Point, as around the world, people are quitting their jobs in record numbers and bosses are scrambling to figure out why. The phrase itself, originated in early May, at a time in which Professor Anthony Klotz, warned that “The Great Resignation is coming” as part of an interview held with Bloomberg.A few weeks later, the Bureau for Labour Statistics confirmed, a record 4 million Americans had left their jobs in April. The trend proved to be a global one, as within the UK, job vacancies grew to an all-time high in July and September, with available posts surpassing 1.1 million. Suddenly, people were reaching for ways to refer to this new phenomenon unfolding before them—to brand it and to make sense of it.Within this episode, Kathryn and I discussed the origins of her article, and how it forms part of a much wider transformation taking place within the global society today. We also discuss, how by embracing an era of narrative, we can derive more meaning by focusing on the root causes rather than a simple slogan. This is a truly wonderful conversation that you’re not going to want to miss!! Ep 15World Suicide Prevention Day Special - Men’s Pie Club
In this episode we chat to the amazing Jamie Sadler, managing director of Food Nation, Harissa Kitchen and founder of the phenomenal Men’s Pie Club. This is a Purpose Made special for World Suicide Prevention Day. Every year, organisations and communities, come together on Sept 10th to raise awareness of how we can create a world whereby fewer people die by suicide. As it is estimated that 800,000 people across the world die from suicide each year. For every death there are many more people who have planned or attempted to take their own lives. According to the World Health Organisation, it’s estimated that one person every 40 seconds dies from suicide, each with their own personal and heart-breaking story. Each and every suicide is a tragedy, causing devastating and permanent impacts on families, friends and broader communities. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we do more to support those in need, invest in care and provisions, openly talk about the issue in hope of reducing these tragic losses. Suicide is a serious global health problem, and is preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions. One of those such interventions, is that of the Newcastle based Men’s Pie Club. A club formed as a response to the increasing need for social connections, particularly for men who are at greater risk of becoming socially isolated. Pie Club is a welcoming place where you can come to get stuff off your chest and put something in your belly and chatting to Jamie was an absolute pleasure and we really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.For more information on Men’s Pie Club, feel free to head over to their websitehttps://www.menspieclub.co.uk/Thank you and we do hope you enjoy. Ep 12Oasis Community Housing - Hope not Homelessness
In this episode we chat to David Smith and Alex Laing from Oasis Community Housing. Oasis is a charity that exists to reignite a hope and provide a future for everyone facing homelessness and like ourselves they believe that anyone’s life can be transformed for the better. That’s why, every year, Oasis offer hope and futures to people facing homelessness. David is the Chief Executive of Oasis whilst Alex is the Project Team Lead for Resettlement. We wanted to speak to Oasis specifically around the fantastic work they are doing within the community and also about the wider impacts the Covid pandemic has had on homelessness and on the charitable sector as a whole. It was reported in June 2020, by the Guardian and as part of a Pro Bono Economic study conducted that 1 in 10 UK charities were facing bankruptcy as they struggle to cope with a £10bn shortfall caused by soaring demand for their services and lost fundraising income due to the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, homelessness is a notoriously difficult thing to quantify. As elements such as sofa surfing, means people often don’t consider themselves to be homeless. Furthermore, there is no national figure for how many people are homeless across the UK. Crazy isn’t it. But that's because homelessness is recorded differently in each of our nations, and because of this, many homeless don’t even show up in official statistics. What we do know is for the last 5 years’ core homelessness has been rising year on year in England, reaching 219,000 before the pandemic with current estimates believed to be in the region of 280,000. Homelessness isn’t inevitable. Finland for example are showing the rest of Europe homelessness can decline. But homelessness must be beyond buildings. It’s about people and nurturing supportive relationships that offer hope and futures and not simply a temporary “Everyone in” accommodation . Chatting to David and Alex was an absolute pleasure and we really hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.Thank you. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
