How understanding cultural backgrounds can lead to better patient care
Joining us today is Raj Sundar, a family physician with expertise in cultural humility and safety. Raj explains that the traditional approach to such situations tends to ignore the patient's cultural values and beliefs, with the health care team often focused on achieving their goals. However, cultural humility and safety offer an alternative paradigm. Cultural humility involves self-reflection of one's own values and beliefs, while cultural safety aims to create an environment free from harm for the patient when receiving care. By applying these principles, we can gain a better understanding of the patient's cultural background and how it influences their decision-making. Through cultural humility and safety, we can create a shared world of care that respects and values diverse communities, providing the best care possible. Raj Sundar is a family physician and can be reached on Twitter @krajsundar. He shares his story and discusses his KevinMD article, "It's time to ditch cultural competence." Surviving clinical rounds: tips and tales from a pediatric hematologist-oncologist
Today's guest is Maha Al-Ghafry, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist who shares her experience with clinical rounds. As health care professionals, we know the struggle of clinical rounds, where you receive patient handoffs, pre-round on EHR, physically pre-round on patients, and then move onto some form of "proper" rounds. You order medications, call consults, and try to avoid taking breaks even when you need to hydrate or use the bathroom. Maha questions why they even call them rounds, as they often feel like you're going round and round in circles, and even as an attending, it's just as arduous. And then there's always that one relative who finds your group and begins screaming about the care of their loved one. Breaking the stigma: Making HIV and COVID screening routine in primary care
In this episode, we welcome clinical research assistant professor, Maranda C. Ward, to discuss the importance of routine screening for both HIV and COVID-19 in primary care. This lack of screening is due in part to the stigma associated with both diseases, which disproportionately impact minoritized populations. Maranda will share her research on how to reduce the stigma by routinizing screening in primary care, and the impact this could have in decreasing the number of new HIV infections and improving vaccination rates. Navigating complex medical issues: one family's story of advocacy and hope
In this episode, we have a special guest, Laura Fernando, a patient advocate, who shares her heart-wrenching story of her daughter Lily's medical journey with COVID-19 and other health conditions. Joining her and Lily is Linda Bluestein, an integrative medicine physician. Lily was a healthy 12-year-old when she contracted COVID-19 in June 2020. Despite recovering from the initial symptoms, her daughter never fully regained her health. She later contracted a tick-borne illness, and her health declined rapidly. Despite working hard in physical and occupational therapy, her daughter's health worsened when she contracted COVID-19 a second time in January 2022. Laura shares the struggles of finding a physician who understood her daughter's unique and complex medical needs and how one physician's actions led to a traumatic experience for her daughter and family. But, they eventually found hope and healing with an autonomic specialist team of a neurologist and a gastroenterologist who believed in her daughter and took the time to listen to their narrative and check her previous medical appointments. Through this episode, the guests discuss the importance of finding the right physician, advocating for yourself and your loved ones in the health care system, and the impact of trauma on the patient's and their family's mental and emotional well-being. Tune in to hear an inspiring story of hope and healing and how one family's perseverance led to a brighter future for their daughter. Laura and Lily Fernando are patient advocates. Breaking the communication barrier: a survival guide for doctors, nurses, and patients
In this episode, we sit down with attorney and author Michael J. Grace to discuss his book, The Mumbo Jumbo Fix: A Survival Guide for Effective Doctor-Patient-Nurse Communication. As a defense lawyer representing health care providers, Michael discovered that many of his clients didn't fully understand their legal obligations when it came to communicating with patients. This led him to start educating physicians and front office staff about effective communication and how it can prevent costly lawsuits. Michael's book addresses the issue of "siloed" communication education in health care, and provides an evidence-based guide for all three essential participants in the health care process: doctors, nurses, and patients. Tune in to hear more about Michael's journey and the insights he's gained as a trial lawyer and hospital administrator. Michael J. Grace is an attorney.
