Ep 279Buy This Crap Podcast Course
There is no quick fixThat's it, that's the content. Thanks for listening!Alright, I know I'm being a little facetious here but this situation is so distressing to me that if I don't act like that, I'll end up quitting work and becoming a hermit here in the hills of Yorkshire, only leaving my cave to test out new <£100 podcast microphones on YouTube. When I started my first ever web design business in 2007 (ish) I loved a silver bullet. This was the early days of SEO and of internet marketing as we know it today and I got into it. I spent time learning how to code websites and how to create content for them so that they'd rank well in the search engine listings.I also spent a lot of time designing simple marketing funnels that would step-sell clients into spending a little more. One Saturday morning I spotted an opportunity: I could create a simple web design and build package that also included some business cards & some other basic printed promotional materials and, with some nice patter, market that as a £297 starter package to new businesses. It was a great package and, if I targeted new local businesses, I could get to know them, plus up-sell them a logo and some ongoing website updates on a recurring basis and do that via Direct Debit, which no one locally was offering.I spent Saturday morning building a simple three-page website and targeted the search keywords around "web design Barnsley".It worked really, really well.My website became top of Google for those terms instantly and, although the search volume wasn't high, it was high-quality in its specificity - the leads were great and the enquiries were hot.New businesses loved the package because everyone else was charging them thousands upfront and as a new business they simply didn't have that kind of money - they were young and scrappy and had a few hundred quid from their family or friends or savings and because I also had other, bigger clients I could afford to take a bit of a risk on them. The website has been offline for years now, but remnants still exist if you're curious. That Saturday morning netted me tens of thousands of pounds of revenue over the next few years, led to a contract worth over half a million pounds and built relationships that still exist to this day.One morning of work.A silver bullet.Or...Three years of learning to code.Three years of learning how to "do" SEO.Two years of working with clients to understand what they wanted.Countless sleepless nights worrying about emails from clients or if I'd get paid on time.But... it was only one morning of work!Wrong. It wasn't. It was one morning of pulling together years of experience into the first idea I had for generating recurring revenue using a high-quality, relationship and skills-based marketing strategy. The challenge as podcasters, then, is that we're often trying to emulate the success of others who have those years of experience, without putting the years in!Two important lessonsI want to impart two important takeaways from this.Firstly, recurring revenue is brilliant. You sell once and, as long as you do a good job, you keep making money on a predictable and value-led basis. I do good things for you and give you results and you keep paying me a bit each month.Scale that and you have a nice business. The type of business that everyone wants to build. Including online "entrepreneurs" & course creators - more on that later.Secondly, I could package how to do that and sell you a...

Ep 278What's is The Biggest Mistake Podcasters Make After 5 Episodes?
A really insightful question came in from Alexandro over in our Podcast Launch Accelerator Office hours recently. Ep 277How to Grow Your Podcast by Being a Human
We can't ask listeners to make us their number one, must-listen podcast choice without giving them a reason to do so.In fact, podcasters like you and I fall into a trap of expecting listeners to do too much for us as soon as they've begun to listen to our podcast. We ask them to share, to subscribe (follow, now!) and to review our podcast "if you like it".The problem is, there's no structure to any of it.It's something that we fall into because it's what every other podcaster does. I'm not even sure we know why we ask for a Podchaser review; why do we want someone to press "follow" or (deprecated) "subscribe" in their podcast app "of choice"?What's the point?Stop for a second and try to answer that.If you did spend a second thinking on it you'll have come to the same conclusion as I did: we want a review because we think it'll help new listeners to choose the show and listen to us; we want someone to press "follow" so that they get new episodes directly sent to them when we publish them. These are actions that the listener takes to benefit us. They don't benefit the listener and, whilst a fan or longer-term supporter of your show will feel good about leaving a positive review, these are things that we internally class as marketing activity.I'm not telling you to stop doing these things. I'm asking you to think about why you do them so that we can begin to think differently about people, together.People are the core of podcasting. They always have been and they always will be. It's a human being (or team of) that creates an episode, it's a human being that consumes it and it's a human being that tells another human being to listen to it.All of the calls to action that we add to our podcast benefit us as podcasters. That's fine. The problem is that they're the only things that we ask of our listeners and we do that because we believe that we've delivered so much time and value during the production of our episode - "Hey it's free, isn't it!" - that we feel it's ok to ask for something in return. My view is that we can do that but if we want to scale it, we have to put a focus on interacting with our listeners much more.Think about this: in podcasting we measure downloads, we ask for subscribers/followers but we want actual people as listeners. We believe that because someone listens to our show, it is enough to class them as a fan. It's not.A fan is someone who advocates for you, who shares your content and tells the world about you without you asking them to.To create fans, your podcast has to be one of, or a combination of, two things: 1. SO good it hooks people. 2. Accessible enough that they feel part of the community.I have no doubt that your podcast is good. But it's not Serial or Business Wars - nor is mine - because we don't have the time or budget to make it that outstanding. That's alright, no one expects us to.Our advantage is that we can make our podcast accessible enough that listeners feel like they're a part of the show and, once they feel that way, they'll be more open to doing the things that we ask them to and connecting other people to our content as fans, not listeners. In short: if we can connect to more people and help them to connect us to more people in their circles, our downloads will naturally grow as new people discover our show. How to grow your podcast by being a human.Indie or hobbyist podcasters don't have marketing budgets.Fact.This is partly why we ask a lot of our listeners: we need them to help us to reach new people because our options are limited when we have no budget. The mindset that many podcasters have - "Hey, I create free content for you, the least you can do is do what I ask you to in return." - is flawed, though. We chose to create a podcast because we wanted to.Even if we had no...

Ep 276How Many Downloads Do I Need Before Monetizing?
Stephen Kosmyna asked me what the number of downloads is that you need before you consider monetizing. It's a multi-layered answer so today, I'm digging in for it.Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 275How to Produce Less & Grow Your Podcast More
Last week I authored a podcast growth thread on Twitter containing five things that I see podcasters doing wrong every day and quick ways to fix them.Over the next five weeks, I'm going deeper into each of these problems to add more context, take a closer look at how to implement the fix and why I suggested each particular approach.Cumulative downloads = the total number of downloads that your entire show has had for the month across all episodes. Aka "the biggest number".The cumulative download number sounds really awesome when you say it out loud.I do it myself if I'm in the pub (remember those?!) and someone asks how many people listen to my podcast. I'll reel off the monthly cumulative download number because I've had half a pint and it sounds good!As a marketer and software company founder, the biggest number is the one you keep an eye on and tell your mates about, but it's not the one that you focus on.In my business, I'm more interested in trial sign-ups, activation rates and churn rates because if those numbers are performing well, the "big" numbers (sales, total revenue) will increase naturally and frankly it's those supporting numbers that drive the big numbers up - without those, the big numbers don't exist. As a podcaster, total downloads is our "big" number and it's the one that you see smattered all over sales pages for courses from gurus. Rightly so, of course, they have achieved those numbers but in doing that it's often implied that it's that number that matters day-to-day as a podcaster. It's not.The supporting numbers are much more important and the total downloads number is a nice to have figure. Sadly, many podcast gurus know how to launch a podcast but they don't usually know how to grow one. Often they have an audience already or they created an original idea that got early traction because of its audacity - all to be commended, but not always bought.Which numbers should we be focusing on, then? This one: the number of downloads that any given episode gets within 28 days of release. The reasons are 1. sponsors want that number because 2. it's a pretty fair estimation of the number of true fans you have and the efficacy of your marketing. With that in mind, the advice that many gurus dish out on how to grow your show being "produce more content" begins to waver a little. If we produce more, we get busier OR we get more automated.Often, these two outcomes lead to our content being worse because we're focused too much on quantity versus quality and if we think even deeper on that, it could mean that our per episode download number decreases as our content gets worse. We enter a cycle of diminishing returns and should focus on producing better content rather than more content to grow our audience of genuine fans.I've spoken about this before and now that I've added some context, let me get to the fix.Podcasting is a game of attention. First, we have to get it (more on that when we start to talk episode titles!) and then we have to keep it. The latter is arguably harder than the former because people change their habits based on their moods. Sure, I may have a habit of listening to a podcast every time I get in the car, but my mood changes and my habit may be to listen to the one or two shows that I simply cannot miss before hunting for new audio content to satiate today's mood for comedy, or drama, or musical interviews for example. The only way to keep someone's attention...

Ep 274Where Should I Submit My Podcast To?
Ok I know this sounds like an obvious question but the fact is, podcasting is changing very rapidly so as a new podcaster it can be super hard to figure out where your show needs to be. Let me give you a rundown.Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 273Was I Too Hard on Apple?
Last week I discussed the new Apple Podcasts Subscriptions and why I thought it was restrictive to podcasters looking to build a business. My main bone of contention is the lack of ability that creators have to ask their buyers whether that buyer wants to let the creator stay in touch via email. But was I too harsh in my assessment?I'm a business person first. I have been since I was 23 and since then I've only failed to pay my mortgage once.It was in 2012. We were running our design and digital agency, maybe a year before I started podcasting. We had some great clients and big retainers but we got let down one month on payment by one of those retainers and, because we'd invested heavily in building out the team during that quarter, the late payment made our directors' salaries two weeks late. That was ok. A quick call to the mortgage company explaining and all was well. But it scared me. The agency was my sole source of income and that single event was the entire catalyst for me doing what I do today and how I do it today.I set my businesses up with three goals: 1. Be profit firstaka. Never rely on investment and build the business model to make money from day one so that...2. I can look after my team and my familyIf I'm burning money as a business then stress appears. In a profit-first business, that doesn't happen because you're able to pay everyone fairly from day one.Podcast Websites was in profit from day one. Captivate was in profit from day one.3. Serve my customers better than anyone else, periodBeing profit first means that I can focus on serving you 100% of the time, not chasing money because I have bills to pay. This often surprises people. Take Captivate for example. People assume that because we're technically a startup that we must have investment and that we must be burning through that investment, ready to make money in year three, four or five.Wrong. Kieran and I built Captivate between us. That's it, no one else built the platform and we did it with long days and very late nights. When we launched, Captivate was making money from day one.I say this not to sound like I'm blowing our own trumpets, I say this because it's how I approach everything that I create. With that mindset, I can make decisions that will lead to success. I've practiced it enough now that I have a fair intuition on decision making, have confidence in my goals and know when to say "no".I also know what I need to do to build businesses.Primarily I need to build genuine, long-lasting friendships that are not for business but that can develop into relationships that will help everyone. That's why I spend so much of my own time being jet-lagged, up at 1 am for a flight and generally looking like mould after travelling for over a day to get to podcast conferences. I have deep deep friendships with people there. And I do the same with "customers". There are so many people who use Captivate that I see socially - and that's not some online entrepreneurial bullshit, it's actually happening.Kipper, Phylecia, Paul Ince, Chris Ducker, Mike & Callie and good lord, Raf...That's a teeny tiny amount of them and they use Captivate because they knew me before that and know that if I say something, I'm good for it.What the heck has this got to do with Apple?I spoke to another couple of friends of mine who are in podcasting over on Twitter Spaces this week and, without naming...

Ep 272Is Facebook Still an Effective Podcast Marketing Platform?
Kipper McGee, of Brandwidth on Demand and a good friend of mine asked if Facebook is still a good marketing tool for podcasters due to the increasing amount of people choosing to spend less time on the platform. With iOS 14 changes, there's more to consider in 2021, that's for sure!Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 271The Problem with Apple Podcasts Subscriptions
Last week, Apple announced Apple Podcasts Subscriptions:Apple Podcasts Subscriptions is a global marketplace for listeners to discover premium subscriptions offered by their favorite creators, including The Athletic and NPR. The Midnight Miracle, the groundbreaking new original series hosted by Talib Kweli, Yasiin Bey, and Dave Chappelle, will be available next month with a subscription to the Luminary channel on Apple Podcasts. The news was met with mixed reactions in the podcasting industry and, inevitably, podcasters are scrambling for information on what this means for them.I've been one of those at the centre of the developments, I've had direct briefings with Apple as CEO of a hosting company and I've been live tweeting a lot if it, too. Here's what you need to know and my opinions, too. What this isn'tApple Podcasts Connect re-launched last week, too. To say it was plagued with issues is an understatement. This isn't a piece discussing those issues, I did that pretty deeply on Twitter, and so I'd like to focus solely on the subscriptions product here.I'm also not, for now, touching on the updated Apple Podcasts analytics or Podcasts Connect interface. What is Apple Podcasts Subscriptions?A service that allows you to sell paid-for subscriptions to your podcast content.Similar to Patreon, Glow, Supercast and more this allows you to offer freemium, fully paid for or "extra" content to paying subscribers. You can use this for several things including ad-free versions of your episodes, bonus episodes that only paying subscribers get and so much more. This is nothing new in the industry and Apple hosts that premium content for you whilst your podcast host such as Captivate continues to host your open, free content. You may not use Apple's subscription service to make people pay for content that is otherwise free elsewhere. You can also use Apple Podcasts Connect to create "channels" of content and to group your podcasts together to create, for example, a Star Wars channel that includes your five Star Wars podcasts or a Nerd Podcasts channel that includes your Star Wars, DC Comics, movie & TV and gaming shows. You can upload artwork to these channels and decide on whether you want to keep them free via RSS and your host, intersperse Apple hosted paid content or even make them entirely paid-for channels. They can only be consumed within Apple Podcasts, right now on Apple devices but I expect Windows and at least Android versions of Apple Podcasts to debut pretty soon, too, likely before the subscriptions service becomes publicly available for consumption in May.PricingThe Apple Podcasters Programme is $19.99 per year (which is a similar model (but lower price)) to the Apple Developer Programme.Apple takes 30% from each paying subscription for the first year and 15% for each year thereafter. This is more expensive than some of the more open eco-systems out there such as Supercast, Glow and Patreon.AdvantagesApple Podcasts is installed on iOS by default so theoretically this gives you access to anyone using an iOS device.In-built, low-friction transactions with Apple Pay.Management of paid content without running two RSS...

Ep 270How to Get Testimonials from The Press for Your Podcast
My long-time friend Annette Bone asked on last weeks podcast launch office hours how she can get PR companies that help her into events as "press" to give her testimonials for her podcast. Here's how I'd approach it personally.Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 269Why I Started Scripting My Podcast Episodes
I've been lucky enough to speak on stages all over the world thanks to podcasting. From educating at Harvard University to delivering a TEDx and speaking at the biggest podcasting conferences on the planet. But during all of that time, I haven't once scripted a talk. Not once. Not even my TEDx.But in January I began scripting my Monday podcast episodes. If I can speak on some of the world's biggest stages without scripting, why did I start scripting my short-form podcast - especially after 1,300+ episodes?!When I wrote my TEDx talk and actually, when I've written any talk in the past for any event that I've spoken at, I've always started with the outcome that I want to deliver. With my TEDx it was "Choose Happiness, Choose Control". That's my destination, the place that I'm taking the viewer or listener to.And my process is to work backwards from that by, in my mind and then on Post-It Notes (all over the wall!), spending days and sometimes weeks thinking of the connective tissue between opening the talk and delivering the outcome.I like to tell stories, so I tend to develop a salient point for each "beat" of my talk and then connect those with anecdotes and tales from my past in life or business so that I can take the viewer on a journey with me, painting a picture during every scene so that they relate and recall each point. Then, my process is to simply get good at telling each of those stories individually and working hard on making the connective tissue between them work to the very best of its ability. It's not scripting - in fact, if you look hard at my TEDx, I do waver off-topic a tad (which I couldn't have done with a script) but I knew my stories and my destination, plus my connective bridges between each story so well that unless I tell you where it is, you'll be hard pushed to find it.I've spent years working on public speaking and have honed that technique over those years.Podcasting has helped. There's no pride to be had in "winging it"When I started podcasting I had an interview podcast (you can still find it if you search for me in your podcast app) and, back in 2013, I had a bulletproof process where the guest would pretty much give me the talking points and the actionable takeaways for each episode. It worked really well and my show notes were almost written for me. But, I'd still spend 20 minutes before each episode researching every guest so that I could take the guest to places that maybe they hadn't been for a while or that other podcast hosts weren't taking them. Often, after the interview, my guest would tell me that they felt it was the best interview that they'd ever done - the one they enjoyed the most.It was flattering but entirely down to my prep. When I stopped my interview podcast in 2016 and went "solo", I began winging it. It was refreshing. After all, I'd been plying my trade for a long time and could (still can) wax lyrical about business, podcasting, startups and life in business all day long. I could produce episodes without ever running out of steam and without ever finding myself short on things to chat through. The most preparation I ever did for an episode was a few bullet points (which I know so many hosts do, too, and it works fine) and it worked really well. I had a base framework but no script. That meant that, just like you're taught in media training, I could go through and make sure to hit the beats that I wanted to whilst also making sure to keep that open, fairly "un-edited" style that people like about me and my brand. That hasn't changed - that's still what people value about how I deliver content. In this growing podcasting world, though, I didn't...

Ep 268Can You Mix Podcast Formats?
Following up last week's question from Doug, who is going through the free Podcast Launch Accelerator course, he also asked if it's wise to mix podcast formats between solo and interview style on the same show. The answer is...Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 267Producing vs Progressing Your Podcast
Lockdown has been hard. I've been a royal pain in the rear to be around, I'm sure. We're social creatures after all but one phrase that keeps coming up during these "How's lockdown been?" discussions is:"Well, it's good to be busy, isn't it."It really is, we aren't here to stagnate! We're here to progress as individuals, collectives and as a species. But as a podcaster, there's a huge difference between being busy and actually progressing. The trouble is, most of us don't see it until it's too late...Hitting podcasting burn out and then realising what you've been doing wrongI stopped producing an interview show for founders in early 2016 after 150 episodes. I was bored of it, frankly. I was working on my Podcast Websites business with Kieran and the EOFire team who we were originally affiliated with on that business and my podcast, whilst fun, was giving my guests a platform for their opinions rather than for me and my ever-growing thoughts about the podcasting industry and my willingness and desire to help podcasters. But it felt great to produce it. I was busy on it and enjoying it.The business, though, didn't benefit from my interview show other than enabling me to be a podcaster (which I'd been for years at that point, and that I'd still be even if I didn't work in the industry).I could pat myself on the back every week and enjoy the highs and buzz of coming down from a great interview but what I couldn't do was reliably grow my podcast. There was an inherent problem with being so busy on my podcast: I was busy producing, not progressing. As a hobby podcaster, I should add, being busy and progressing are often one and the same. Many podcasters podcast because they want to enjoy podcasting, talk about something they love with people they love talking to and that's it - nothing else - and you know what, that's completely fine - many of the best podcasts have no illusions of grandeur or giving the host "financial freedom" so they can create courses on how to achieve "financial freedom" (why do they do that if they have "financial freedom? Surely they don't need the money, right?! Anyway... I digress). The problem though, is that a lot of podcasters are told that creating a podcast will "10x your authority" or "Give you instant expert status" (add other LinkedIn crap here at your will...) and they believe that to be true on the basis of just turning up.So when it doesn't happen, when their numbers are "low", they blame podcasting (the medium) not thinking for a second that their focus is wrong. What then happens is that they double down on production, feel great about it for three months but then find themselves back in the same position. They're busier than ever before but are now seeing the diminishing returns that I've spoken about in various podcast episodes before and thus, the perpetual cycle continues and eventually leads to "podfading" (aka. stopping their podcast).Choose progress over productionProducing your podcast is a given. You have to do it in order to podcast. But production isn't something that you can continually lean on as a badge of honour as a podcaster, it's something you're expected to do as part of the committed dedication to your audience that you signed up for when you started podcasting. In my view, expecting someone to applaud you for being so busy producing your podcast is like expecting applause for turning up at the job you chose, to do the job you actually do every day. It's the baseline. Ep 266Podcast Cover Art Mistakes to Avoid

My friend Ashleigh asked me recently about whether she can build her network AND monetise through an interview show and it led me to think more about how you set primary and secondary goals for your show.Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. Ep 263The Podcast Industry is Too Big for You
Last week the podcast industry reported that there are now two million active podcasts, up from one million a year ago and up from the ~190,000 that existed when I started podcasting 8 years ago.Are you about to get drowned out?Podcasting is too big for youTwo million is a lot of podcasts. Right?Sure it is. And while it's brilliant for the industry (read: money in the industry) it's a statistic that is terrifying for the independent, day-to-day podcaster like you and I.Think about it: content production companies in podcasting are springing up everywhere at a rate that I've never seen before. Many of them are funded and can move quickly by hiring teams to create stunningly produced content and more importantly, invest money into marketing that podcast very, very heavily. These companies are media companies, not just podcasting companies and they're focussed on creating amazing content for brands that want to get into the space or they're focussed on building original content with the intent of selling that IP to studios to be made into TV shows, movies, books, graphic novels, merch and so much more. They're advanced, too. They make money right away from sponsors thanks to dynamic content, monetising their entire episode inventory and bagging a range of stars to voice their stories. They invest in high concept artwork, photography and don't just sound great, but look wonderful too.In short: they're crushing it and they began crushing it pretty darn quickly!Remember: FactfulnessOne of my favourite books is Factfulness by Hans Rosling. It's a delightfully data-driven book that looks at how much the world has and continues to get better, overall, without dressing up the fact that bad things still happen. The main takeaways from that book for me were that 1. the media only reports on stories and 2. the real stories are in the breadth of data, not the extremes that get the headlines and the clicks. That happens in podcasting, too. It's much more useful to the industry overall for the headlines to be about the latest acquisition, major show launch or startup faux pas than it is for the industry to hear "Mark's Star Wars Show Hits 100 Downloads Per Episode!".But it's those data that make up the vast majority of podcasting! The significant majority of the podcasting industry is made up of people like you and I who create content because we love doing it and who love engaging with the real people who ALSO love what we produce. When we, the day-to-day podcast enthusiasts, see big headlines about the podcasting industry it's so easy to become disheartened but remember: we're the soul of podcasting and our podcast is something very special. Your show is something special.Your podcast is a scalable personal experience that connects like-minded people from all over the world through a shared love. Our job as podcasters isn't to worry about the size of the industry or to try to emulate the headline-grabbing projects. Our job as podcasters is to continue on our own path and to keep producing content that connects people to the things that they adore.By staying in lane, focussing on what we do well and what we can control, podcasting will continue to work for us, regardless of what else is happening in the audio world.Podcasting anxiety is a reality!I get so many emails from podcasters who do great work but who feel disheartened every single time they hear about a new "big" development in the industry. They get disheartened because they worry about how they can compete; they're concerned about how they can

Ep 262Can You Bounce Between Podcast Formats?

Following up on last week's question, Doug also asked "In my programs which are recorded from webinars I have a Q&A at the end of the program. Ep 259Apple Podcasts Changes Incrementally Improve Podcasting
If you've ever seen or heard me talk about the Listener Acquisition Flow at Podcast Movement, Podfest or on my show, you know that I've long struggled with the word "subscribe" in podcasting.I started considering it a few years ago when watching the Infinite Dial by Edison Research and Triton and I was reminded of it again last week when watching the 2021 event, too."Subscribe" IS a problem in podcasting and despite shouty OG podcasters saying it's not, times have changed and it really is a small problem with big connotations. But why?Since podcasting "started" back in the mid-noughties, the world has changed. No longer are magazines and newspapers the only things that we subscribe to. Instead, Amazon Prime, Netflix plus any one of a thousand subscription boxes and once-boxed-up software platforms now exist on a monthly or annual subscription basis and take our money in a recurring pattern. And they all focus on us owning a subscription. When we throw into the mix that podcasters generally aren't great marketers (that's ok, by the way), the word "Subscribe" is thrown around way too often in a ploy to get prospective listeners to listen to more of our show.Setting aside that that approach just doesn't work very well in marketing your show (for more on that, you really should check out the Listener Acquisition Flow), for the casual listener (the very people who will help podcasting to grow) the word "subscribe" alludes to having to pay for a podcast in 2021.As I said earlier, some OG podcasters have had a bit of a cry about this, saying things like "No one has ever asked me if you have to pay to listen!" (to paraphrase) and while I understand that, it's also representative of podcasting's bigger issues: podcasting isn't yours anymore, OG, it's for everyone and it has moved on - move with it or stagnate, that's your choice, but the "good old days" are done.If podcasting is to thrive it has to be more accessible and thankfully, Apple has made a small but significant change to help new people to understand that "subscribing" isn't about paying. How?By changing the "Subscribe" button in Apple Podcasts to say "Follow", instead, just like Spotify. What does this mean for you as a podcaster? To answer that, we need to actually look at the prospective listener, for whom a barrier has been lifted: regardless of whether you think the word "subscribe" implies payment is required or not, ambiguity no longer exists and in marketing, the absence of ambiguity leads to positive results.People know what to do when ambiguity disappears. Life becomes easier because there's zero education required to show people that that "Subscribe" means something different in podcasting than in Netflix, Amazon and other recurring worlds."Subscribe" really only exists, anyway, in podcasting because that's the nomenclature associated with RSS feeds - it's an old overhang from a time when podcasting was for the geeks like me and not for the on-demand generation who just want what they want.Another huge problem for the prospective listener has been removed, too, though: the burden of staying up to date.In my Listener Acquisition Flow talk I posit that a listener is different to a fan: a listener is someone who dips into your show and listens now and then; a fan is someone who won't miss an episode even if their ears are on fire.We all want fans, but the majority of our listeners are just that - listeners. They probably don't listen to every podcast episode that we put out (sorry) and in fact, when I ran some research before launching The...

Ep 258Should You Release LOTS of Episodes on Launch Day?
This week, Doug Piper asked "If you're starting a new podcast and you've created 40 or more episodes ready to release. How many would you start with and how often would you release them?" so let me get right to that...Your next stepsI teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. So, here's what I'd recommend you do next:Watch my free podcasting tutorials on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/rebelbasemediaLearn how to launch your own podcast the right way, for free (plus a comprehensive download-and-keep crib sheet): https://www.podcastsuccessacademy.comAsk me anything at all about podcasting over on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/MrAsquithP.S. you can start engaging with your listeners using AWeber. Ep 257Explode Your Podcast Growth
That episode title right there, that's called a "bait and a switch".I have no intention of teaching you how to explode anything.Annoyed? Close the email now, it's cool.Or don't, your call. But you see, this is an experiment: will people who don't usually open these Monday emails open this one because of that subject line?If so, what did they expect to find?A proven method for podcasting success?A roadmap to 10x your downloads?A path to podcasting superstardom? The more I type this, the more these things begin to feel like subject lines, too - subject lines intended to sell something to you. Most of these types of subject line are specifically constructed to appeal to your sense of anxiety and are intended to be set alongside an email that introduces scarcity and urgency with a healthy dose of FOMO (fear of missing out) thrown in, too.Let me show you:Ready to explode your podcast growth and 10x your revenue with this proven roadmap? The very roadmap that I use myself to lead the life I choose? You can access that roadmap instantly if you act right now and choose to take action to work with people just like you who are boosting their revenue as we speak! Access these podcast growth secrets right now (number two will shock you!).That's hardcore marketing patter with underlying NLP practices included to make you feel like you're understood, you're heard and that the seller is aligning with you in such a way that they must have the answer to why, despite all of your efforts, you're not achieving the success that they have.95% of the time it's complete BS.But... I DO want to explode my podcast growth Hey, doesn't everyone? The problem is that by its very definition, the word explode isn't so great...Explode: 1. burst or shatter violently and noisily as a result of rapid combustion, excessive internal pressure, or other process. 2. (of a violent emotion or a situation) arise or develop suddenly. (from Oxford Languages)Erm... no thanks.I was in a Twitter chat with two people I admire very much this weekend and we were having a laugh about Clubhouse being full of this type of marketer right now and heck, podcasting being full of this type of marketer period.A few hours later I was cutting the hedge outside (something I suck at by the way, never ask me for a haircut) and was thinking through the reasons why podcasters want to "explode" their growth.I came to two logical assumptions. Firstly, podcasters want to explode their growth because they want to earn a fair bit of money through their podcast. I'm totally in for that. I like money as much as you - there is nothing wrong with wanting to earn good money through your podcast.Secondly, they don't know how to break the plateau they're seeing in their podcast growth so when they're hit with big, powerful verbs like "explode" it gets them curious - what's the secret that they're missing but that everyone else seems to know about?Let me tell you an actual secret (no, no, not a time-bound marketing secret that'll cost you $47 (down from $10,000) if you act now)Most of the people teaching you how to "explode" anything don't really know how to do it.I'm not just being cynical here, I'm being serious. The people who know how to explode growth in anything are really busy exploding growth in their thing - not selling courses or spending fifty hours a week on Clubhouse trying to convince people they know how to do it.I know of entrepreneurs, online celebrities and many more...

Ep 254What Is Dynamic Content Insertion? - Podcaster Questions
There's been a lot of noise lately about podcast advertising and dynamic ad insertion (or content). Rightly so: DAI/DCI is a super exciting facet of podcasting that can make your content more relevant, timely and valuable. Ep 2533 Ways to Make A Better Podcast with Descript
Last week we integrated Captivate with Descript to make your life easier as a podcaster and although integrations sound really cool on Twitter, I wanted to spend a bit of time today giving you some actual real-life insights on how you can make a better podcast by using Descript. In fact, here's Descript - this is the only link to it.What is Descript?Descript is a super-powerful and super-simple audio & video workstation that helps you to produce outstanding edits, video and promotional podcast content without the need to master complex tools like Audacity or Audition.Descript is good for beginner and pro podcasters and includes advanced AI tools like Overdub and Filler Word Removal which can revolutionize the way you edit - particularly how you run a first edit of your episodes. The interface works exactly like a Word document so there’s no tech barrier, you can carry out much of your podcast production workflow inside Descript without the need for extra tools, subscriptions and juggling different services.Descript publishes your finished file directly to Captivate and allows you to create pretty sweet audiograms, too. There are loads of different ways to produce better podcasts in Descript, but here are my 3 cherry-picked recommendations for using Descript to produce a better podcast. There are loads of different ways to produce better podcasts in Descript, but here are my 3 cherry-picked recommendations for using Descript to produce a better podcast.1. Use the transcription tool for more than just transcriptionTranscriptions are good for accessibility in podcasting and when you import your podcast to Descript, their software does a decent job of transcribing the audio into a usable transcript. You're going to have a little work to do, especially if you have a solid Northern English accent like me, but the power that you have here is not just in correcting your transcript using the Word-like editor, but in actually using the editor to tighten up your audio.Lemme explain...Descript is a non-destructive editor that allows you to edit the words on screen and that will, in real-time, edit the audio to suit what you've tweaked.Any good podcaster (any good story-teller) knows that the magic happens in the edit and removing pieces of the podcast or even rearranging the flow slightly to tighten up the narrative will give you a much cleaner, focussed resulting episode.Which leads me to...2. Use Overdub and Filler Word Removal to tighten up your edit even furtherGood editing isn't just about removing content to tighten up the tale - it's also about adding what may be missing from your first run. It's why movies do reshoots (Snyder Cut anyone?!).The trouble is that as a podcaster that can be a real pain in the pop filter - firing up the mic, the recorder, stitching up the audio and making sure the transition is smoother than Kieran at a speed-dating night can be time-consuming.Until Overdub.Overdub is Descript's "killer feature" that allows you to train the app to emulate and deliver a facsimile of your voice so that you can change and add to your audio just by typing. It's crazy. And it works.Using Overdub to tweak an errant phrase, tighten up a piece of your episode or sharpen a mispronunciation means that there's no need at all to re-record anything. You can even add lengthy...

Ep 251How to Deal with a Sudden Drop in Podcast Listeners
I delivered a talk at Podcast Movement back in 2015 and during the session I made a quip about podcasters like myself waking up, making a coffee and firing up their download analytics to check the downloads that happened overnight.I then went on to state that when I was a new podcaster I'd not only do that myself, but I'd check them every single hour throughout the day.It got plenty of laughs and more than a couple of head shakes from the seasoned podcasters in the room.It was a flippant point to make and was aimed at being self-deprecating - I wanted to show that I understood how every podcaster feels when they launch their show and heck, even way beyond that as they become a "veteran" podcaster. In the early days of a show, the numbers go one way - they have to because nothing existed before. We ride the continual high of growing downloads and seeing our trends all being in the green within Captivate's podcast analytics dashboard means that we rest easy: our podcast is growing. But then the growth stops. The production hamster-wheel that we put ourselves on the second that we begin creating a podcast isn't enough to sustain the natural "inner-circle" growth that we see in the early days - the days where producing something and letting those close to us know about it is enough to sustain progressive growth. How do we handle our podcast's pre-teen years? The years where growth appears to have stunted and our show hasn't hit its startling growth trajectory yet?For many podcasters, this is where we quit. Why?We're told that consistency is key to a growing podcast and I agree with that. But what no one tells us is that it's not only consistency in producing our show that we need to maintain and it's not even consistency in promoting our podcast that we should focus on, it's consistency in growing our marketing that we need to give more attention to.Don't worry, this isn't another "do more marketing" message - this is about building a framework to manage download dips and slowdowns in your podcast's growth.I liken this experience to training at the gym, in fact.As a middle-aged former skinny-guy-turned-pot-bellied-podcaster I have experience in hitting a plateau in weight training. At age 31 I was 6 foot 1 inch tall, weighing 150 lbs. At age 33 I was 6 foot 1 inch tall, weighing 210 lbs.In two years I trained hard, ate cleanly and added lean mass to my frame to help with my fitness and general mindset - it was something I wanted to achieve to prove that I could do it.But it wasn't a straight line. If I were to draw my progress on a line graph, it would be littered with plateaus and dips in progress and oh my, is it disheartening when it happens. But there was one course of action and it's something that I learned from those around me who were more experienced than I and which helped me break through a plateau every single time: you have to shock the system into changing itself - you have to do something so that the thing you're trying to develop has to change in response to new stimuli. From a training perspective that was a tweak to the diet or a new regimen of exercising that pushed the muscular and cardiovascular systems into having to work on something fresh, thus developing itself progressively with each change. The same can be said for your podcast. When you see a dip in your podcast downloads, you don't need to be dejected or assume the worst. No one likes your podcast any less. You haven't lost fans - you've more than likely lost lurkers: those who dip into your show for a few minutes but don't deep-dive.That's alright - unless you're converting them to avid listeners (per my favourite visual of this process, the...
