The Plant Path: Herbalism, Medical Astrology & Spagyric Alchemy

We've all seen it before. You get super excited about a new herb and want to learn more about it. So you pull your herb books off the shelf and open it to the monograph on that plant. Unfortunately what you end up with is oftentimes only a few paragraphs, many of which begin with "This herb is good for…." followed by a list of symptoms. While this type of information can be useful, for me, it's just not deep enough. It doesn't ultimately lead to me having a comprehensive understanding of how that plant functions physiologically and alters the state of the tissues, organs and systems within the body. What an herb is "good for" doesn't concern me as much as who that herb isand how it functions physiologically. This has led to me to describe medicinal plants based on their clinical patterns, meaning what are the constellations of symptoms, physiological imbalances, and underlying tissue state/constitutional energetics that makes that plant beneficial for certain problems. So rather than saying "Willow is good for headaches." I want to know why Willow is good for headaches. What is it doing on a physiological and energetic level in the body that makes it beneficial for headaches? What type of headache is it good for? Because many people take Willow for a headache and it doesn't do anything, but others do and it helps immensely. In essence, we want to get more specific with our understanding on how to apply medicinal plants within a therapeutic context, and in my opinion the best way to do that is to understand the underlying patterns within the plants and how they match certain patterns within a person. Pain is one of the #1 reasons people go to see the doctor these days. The art of herbal formulation is… well just that- an art!! The #1 mistake too many herbalists make when it comes to formulating is that they think about what organ system they want to work with and BAM- throw every herb they can think of that does something to that system and hope that it will work. I don't want you to be a hope formulator!! Rather I want you to be a strategic and intelligent formulator. In this video I laid out a simple process that I use when I'm thinking through creating an herbal formula. It basically sums up to thinking about what organ affinity I want the herb to operate on, what specific actions I want the plants to have on those organ systems, and most importantly, what specific energetics I want the net effect of the formula to have (IE hot, cold, wet or dry). From there I will think of any supplemental or additional actions or organ systems that will help achieve the net result of the formula. Too many herbalists stop at the organ system, or will simply keep it at herbal actions, without thinking about the overall net effect of the herbs on not just the organs, but the entire constitution as a whole, as well as other secondary organ systems. In part 2 of The Elements in People and Plants, we explore some the Elemental patterns as they exist within the botanical kingdom. From the perspective of ancient traditions, everything in the manifest universe contains all of the four Elements of nature: Earth, Water, Air and Fire- that is, the only way something can physically exist is if it contains these Elemental forces. That being said, every living being has a certain Elemental composition, or constitution, with 1 or 2 having the strongest influence and reflection within it. When observing plants and their Elemental reflections, it is important to consider the wholeness of the plant- not just one singular aspect (like the shape, or taste, or a medicinal action). To truly grasp the depth of how the Elements relate to plants we must look at every facet of an herb- from it's habitat, it's morphological characteristics, as well as the various layers of how it influences a person on a physiological, energetic, and spiritual level. Upon understanding the primary Elemental ruler of a plant, you start to see deeper into the core nature of that plants uniqueness, its essential nature. Suddenly everything about a plant relates to itself and you see the deeper meaning behind why that plant is the way it is.
