313: Interest Edition: Jenny Valentish - Author 'Everything Harder than Everyone Else'
Jenny Valentish, Author and Journalist, has just released a new book "Everything Harder than Everyone Else", why some of us push our bodies to extremes. Jenny is the author of the acclaimed Woman of Substances, a regular contributor to The Sydney Morning Herald and the Saturday Paper and a former Editor of Timeout Melbourne, and Triple J's J Mag. When Jenny wrote her book about addiction, she noticed that people who treated drug taking like an Olympic sport would often hurl themselves into a pursuit such as a marathon or ultra-marathon upon getting sober. What stayed constant was the need to push their boundaries. The book follows people doing the things that most people couldn't, wouldn't or shouldn't. The interviewees in Jenny's book lead Jenny on a journey through psychology, endurance and the power of obsession, revealing what we can learn about the human condition. I'd call this a handbook into analysing why you do what you do as an endurance athlete. In this episode we dive deep into its contents: What the author's mean by bone workload Optimal workload to induce skeletal adaptation The fact that not all athletes have good skeletons Why it is that distance running does not build good bones How we can use periodisation to help build more bone The effects of early specialisation with sport and the contribution to bone stress injury risk Why it is that optimising bone structure is critical and how it only develops before puberty How it is that we can positively affect our bone density and bone architecture through loading with multiple direction jumps and why it is only during puberty that this is possible How we can positively increase the robustness of our skeleton through bone centric exercises How we can try and minimise training errors to avoid the onset of a bone stress injury, a stress fracture a stress reaction or similar Show Sponsor: Precision Hydration If you've ever struggled with hydration issues like cramp during long, hot sessions, it's worth checking out precisionhydration.com. 278: Expert Edition: Amy Harding (PhD) Researcher, Menzies Health Institute, Griffith University; Exercise & Bone Health across the Lifespan
Amy shares around how we can optimise our skeletal or bone health across our lifespan, what can we do pre puberty, what can we do as adults and what can we do post menopause and as Amy states MANopause for the blokes in order to ensure we have optimal skeletal health in lower likelihood or mobility associated with low bone density or poor bone health such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. Amy works alongside former featured expert of the show Professor Belinda Beck. Amy has outputted greater than 20 publications in her burgeoning research career. In one landmark study, which she co collaborated with her Griffith University Research colleagues, Professor Belinda Beck and Associate Professor Ben Weeks was called the LIFTMOR M trial, this trial explored the effects of supervised high intensity resistance and impact training on the bone geometry and strength in middle aged and older men with low bone mass. Amy and her research team at Griffith University Men's Health Institute discovered a real dearth in the literature around the role of exercise in helping men with low bone mass post MANopause. Amy outlines the role that exercise plays in terms of adapting our skeletons, the keys in optimizing our skeletal health pre puberty, why it's important to look at maintaining maximising bone health as an adult and then ways that we can fight the decline post menopause or MANopause in terms of our bone health. Amy shares why high intensity low repetition exercise is so important and why high repetition low resistance exercise doesn't produce the same positive results on bone adaptation. Amy encourages us that it is never too late to improve our bone health.
